AFL Live 2

I'm just devastated about how bad this game is. I read all the posts yesterday but tried to stay positive but it is truly a turd. Is it too much to ask for a newer game to be slightly better at least? Not 10x worse? Gameplay, animations, controls- all awful. The AL1 controls made sense, these don't at all. Tackle and kick same button? WTF are they on? if someone at Tru Blu is reading this- fix it now. Admit the mistakes and announce a patch very soon.

One reason as to why I think all of you hate this game... From all the gameplay videos you all seem to be pressing the sprint button right after the mark... WTF is wrong with you why do you do this. Its possibly one of the reasons why you feel the game is shit.

(Watching all the youtube videos and it seems obvious to me that this is the reason)

Eventhough I don't have this game, it seems to be one of the best PS/XBOX AFL games out there.

Oh please, your posts reek of you being a Tru Blu/WW insider, this one just about sums it up.

One of the best games? LOOOOOOOOOLLLL.

Go back to Tru Blu/WW and give your coworkers a kick in the head and try and get that crayon taken out of your brain, might help.

By the time they get around to patching this game nobody will own it, from what I have seen about 90% of people are returning it.

Im curious to know whether Ross (Big Ant) has played the game yet and what his thoughts are.

Hey guys, long time lurker here, thought i'd get an account started and throw my thoughts into the mix on this game, and hopefully contribute further to the board in the future.

I've been following on the board since Ross started giving his updates on the development of the first AFL Live (Big props btw.), and I was really excited for the game. I bought it as soon as it launched and played the crap out of it.

I quickly grew to hate it. A couple of months later, my xbox scratched the disc up and it became unplayable, and I never sought to get a replacement copy, never felt the need.

There were some key mechanics in that first game that bugged me to no end. In particular the way in which center clearances were won based on what I liked to call 'Last Man Standing'. Pretty much every player around the contest picks the ball up and gets tackled instantly, taking 3 hours to get to their feet until there is only one player left to take possession and get the clearance, which makes it almost completely reliant on AI positioning around the contest.

It was pretty much impossible to get any form of clean play in congestion, sometimes i'd be able to get some clean handballs out (While being tackled, of course.) and get a few handball chains going to get a clearance, but it was a rare occurence, and making it look good and clean was even harder.

Now, i'm not bagging on BigAnt here, because while I didn't enjoy the first AFL Live, I could appreciate Ross and the team had laid the groundwork for what could eventually be a great AFL game in further titles. So when I heard they weren't involved with the second one, I became very skeptical. Lets face it, given the different developer, and the development time, I thought Live 2 would be utter crap.

Anyway, my first playthrough of AFL Live 2, I got a tap down to a midfielder, a clean handball without being tackled, another one, then hit my full forward on the chest. I hadn't quite sussed out the set shots, so I sprayed my first shot. But the ability to actually have some resemblance of clean play out of congestions was the first massive plus in my book. This happened countless times throughout the game as I was able to finally play some good looking football, in stead of continuously spilling the ball forward until I got enough space to kick it to a forward.

I was playing with a friend, who has had much more experience with the first AFL Live, and it was a tightly contested game. We encountered interchange issues, my team (Carlton) made no interchanges the entire game, apart from an injury. While inexplicably my friend (Freo) after the first bounce suddenly had Mzungu in the ruck and Sandilands on the bench for most of the game. (He persisted with it because it was funny that Mzungu was actually winning some hitouts.) We checked the settings to see that our interchange was on Full Auto, but found it strange that no interchanges were made. Not really a big issue for us, we were having fun, and I know that in the future that I would like to make most of my changes manually anyway once I get the hang of things.

People are saying the bouncing is unrealistic, I still say it's better than the Ice Hockey physics of the ball in the first game, but still mostly a minor thing for me.

The graphics, yeah they're pretty bad, no worse than Live 1 as far as i've seen, some models are probably better to be honest, it is hit and miss, but I heard they will be patching to improve the visuals, so that is a plus. I'm not in the industry but I find it hard to believe that games in this day and age on the current gen can still look as bad as these AFL games do when there are quite a few indie games out there that look fantastic visually. Whether it is time constraints, coupled with budget, and the amount of players on the field, i'm not sure and while people say gameplay is more important (And it is) they downplay how much visuals lend to immersion in video games.

The commentary is bad as well, but I feel games like NBA 2K, FIFA etc have spoilt us with commentary. Sure, the more you play, even those games get repetitive, but all the commentary is so fluid, something these AFL games still lack.

I guess the point of my post is that I was a little surprised at the people who think the first AFL Live is better. It is obviously personal preference, but for me, Live 2 has fixed the gameplay problems that frustrated with me in Live 1, it actually somewhat resembles a bit of football instead of the tackle and spill-fest that Live 1 was. And on top of that, It is fun!

To expand, my first game was in career mode as the Murray Bushrangers v Geelong Falcons. I found it quite hard to play as both sides have a dark jumper, and the camera angle was either way too close or way too far, so i couldn't really find a happy medium. Went with the far angle, so picking out who was who was difficult.

Anyway, my FF kicked eight goals and I won by 45 points. Most of those eight goals came from winning the clearance to the ruck rover, handballing over the top of the opposition CHB to my CHF, who runs forward then handballs to the unopposed FF in the goalsquare, one sausage roll thank you. Found it a little too easy but hey it was fun to do on my first play.

Then played against Collingwood as North Melbourne. Don't like how the 'twilight' setting works. How hard is it to make the first half in sunny conditions with a bit of shadow, and the second half as a night game? And twilight matches at Etihad always have the roof shut, not open. That bugged me. Anyway, it was a low-scoring game, the Pies got out by 14 points with about 1:30 to go in the last quarter, and i'd kicked about 2.9 because I honestly can't work out the goalkicking method. Then everything started going my way, I kicked four goals in 90 seconds and ended up winning by 10 points.

Tom Harley's commentary is atrocious. But I usually mute these type of games and listen to music while I play, so I don't really care about that. The music on this game is quite good, might I add.

Based on my hour or so of play time so far, i'd give it a 3/10. AFL Live 1 is about 7/10 for me.

Do you have to give a reason why you're returning it? or can you just return it

EB Games have a 7-Day return policy. I bought mine at JB Hi-Fi though, i've found them to be pretty cool with things like returns though, i'll go there next week and ask if I can get my money back. Considering I sent my laptop to them to get repaired under warranty nine weeks ago and they have no idea where it is or if its been fixed as of today, I think they owe me one.

Also, how do you shoot for goal from the boundary line? In my first game the opposition kicked the ball into the behind post, and I was given a free kick at goal. I had no idea what to do. I ended up hitting the goalpost with a straight kick.

Least they got that right

I'd just suggest people who are unsure whether to buy or not, just hire it out or something and make their own decision on the game rather than take anyone from this forum's opinion.
