Over the years, VicRoads has introduced a number of different series of AFL number plates. Some examples are shown below, and in my opinion, most of these are terribly ugly:

My aim was to produce a set of number plates that would be uniform in appearance and look smart. The clubs' identities would need to be more instantly recognisable, as often they are not, in the above examples. It seemed to me that they would need to follow a design hierarchy in order to achieve this and avoid the dog's breakfast effect above...

Summary of features of my design:
  • Uniform layout across all clubs
  • Dimensions changed to those of Euro-plates
  • Design heirarchy of colours originating from the numbering on home guernseys
  • Use of the square "membership sticker-style" square guernsey logo pioneered by Melbourne to identify the club; cleaner and more recognisable than club logos
  • The A stands for AFL and is mainly there to ensure a new set of plates can be produced that does not use existing combinations such as "ESS 123" etc
  • The lettering layout follows a strict grid as per number plate production which leads to some funky spacing and lack of kerning; it's supposed to be like this
  • I'm aware that one or two clubs are missing, but to paraphrase the Honourable Joe Hockey, ex Member of Parliament and Treasurer of Australia, "Bulldogs supporters can not afford customised number plates."

From purely an aesthetic view, I'm not convinced that uniform presentation for all clubs is the way to go.
OK, but I still think they look tackier with the actual logos of the AFL and clubs...

Nice to see some others getting involved.

The font makes a big difference too. There are clearly at least four official number plate fonts and the one I used is one of the oldest...

Anything would beat the earliest WCE plates in WA...

Lousy execution of the logo, and done without the AFL's permission too...

I absolutely love seeing these ones around Perth. Simple, great colours, look great. What I hate is the Dockers ones with the old "Fremantle" and "Dockers" from the original logo next to each other and they just don't fit and they look terrible.

Totally disagree good sir,

I love seeing these plates around in Western Australia, especially on white Land Cruisers.

Looks mint.

WHITE??? Boooooooooooo...

(hang on, does that rule apply to cars too???)

Most personalised plates that aren't black or white look tacky, but these look far better than any footy plates I've seen DiamondGuy. Can't go wrong with Euro style.

Thanks! The lack of "likes" suggests to me that improvements are still required, though. Perhaps using the Euro font, rather than the old 70s/80s/90s one. In any case I still think my colour hierarchy and square icons are a good idea.
