It'll take many long nights to fix the problems that game has. I think their first priority should be to fix that whole falling on your arse thing when trying to take a speccie!

I religiously buy AFL games but left the one in question well alone purely because of the bad press it received both here and elsewhere.

The lineup bugs, the commentary bugs, the Joe Misiti is a sumo-wrestler bug, et al.

Makes you wonder if they bothered testing the thing and if they knew about all these problems - how could they not? - it is mindboggling that they even bothered to release it.

rather than criticize the games faults you could always email acclaim and give them an idea of the bugs that should be fixed, or some things that you would like introduced.

especially team selection for me its a bit tedious that you cant save one team line up for the next game of the season only needing to make minimal changes from week to week.

IIRC, an army of disgruntled buyers have done that already, just getting a stock-standard template stating that "Acclaim is aware of... etc etc"

We're not talking about rare and 'only in certain circumstances' bugs here either.

As I said, hopefully they've done their homework with this new one.

why couldnt they just release a patch for this, like the first footy game that came out yrs ago, you could swap players from team to team and all.

any programmers out there working on something like this utility?

Does it look like it? :D

Im going to wait for this one. IMO it wont be much better then '04. Acclaim games arent my favourites anyway. I wish EA were back on the job.

doesnt hurt to ask as many cracks and patches are made by unofficial programmers for other games,

ea wont touch it not enough money in it for world wide release to get there money back.

This game is a disgrace, it will always be poor. What's with Tarrant on the front cover kicking the ball with his right foot? His almost a right footer. They can't even get that bloody right.

It wasn't so bad. Better than no game at all don't you think? At least it is a stepping stone for 2005 - there was enough new stuff in this latest version to suggest that if they had more time it would have been a worthy successor. e.g. snaps, torps, continual seasons (currently playing season 2005) and, perhaps best of all, fixing the 2003 bug where the AI never ever tackled from behind when you were running with the ball. All up I think the fact that the hard difficulty setting was a lot harder than in 2003 makes it a better release for those that are showing some loyalty to the series.

The change to marking was a step in the right direction, shame they buggered it up. Also the kicking for goal - geez - has anyone ever kicked a single point even in torrid wind from a set shot? Almost impossible. It made Telstra Dome a ridiculous ground as there was never any wind to even make it a tiny challenge. All they need do is create a system similar to what they use now for ruck contests and it is problem solved. You could have the difficulty of the shot and the skill of the player set the speed at which the indicator moves across the band. Maybe not perfect but at least you would have a bit of suspense when kicking for goal.

I have sent Acclaim a sh*tload of feedback on the PC version, generally they have been receptive although they never suggest what any future plans are. I am sceptical, hopefully this premiership edition will correct some of the farcical bugs of the Live 2004 release. Also it is hopefully a sign that future versions of the game will come out at the start of the season when everyone is excited about the footy and also, the bl00dy lists can finally be correct.

For those that wish EA still had the licence, it's a debate for another time, but AFL 98 PC version had even more problems than Live 2004 imo (e.g. AI could not kick goals unless five metres out...bit of a problem!). The fact the the PS version was bug free is largely a moot point as it was a poor man's version of AFL 97 on PC.

All,

For your edification and amusement here is my recent corres to Acclaim with subsequent reply re: Premiership edition:

Hi folks,

Very excited by the news there is to be a new AFL release in the next few months. I hope you get the chance to tweak a few things in Live 2004, I'm still playing the PC version and enjoying it but hopefully your getting the chance to look at a couple of things. For what it is worth here are the things that are most noticeable six months into game play (PC version):

- kicking for goal too easy - as a suggestion need to implement a system like how the ruck contest works (e.g. press the button at the right time as the indicator moves across the screen - skill of player and difficulty of shot can determine indicator speed)
- AI of midfielders running in the clear is weird...they seem to peel off as a group and run to the flanks all the time, this is especially noticeable when pushing forward. Have it happen sometimes but not 99% of the time
- need the player radar from Live 2003 back - at least as an option
- handballing to a player running past you from a free kick or mark almost never works to your advantage - they seem to stop and wait for the pass, making it easy for the man on the mark to just turn around and tackle them
- punching the ball when on the run is almost impossible unless you stop first and jump straight up in the air. There is a nice animation for punching on the run, but it just never seems to beat someone trying to mark the ball. Similarly marking on the run is also very difficult unless the AI 'takes over' and marks for you
- the safest and easiest mark seems to be when you are standing at the front of the pack with your back facing the ball. It looks funny and of course is almost impossible to do in a real AFL situation. Also it looks like you are wearing anti gravity boots
- when jumping for the ball positioning yourself as the player in front and pressing to mark the ball often has you fall over for no apparent reason - if it is the player behind you doing this then that would be a push in the back.
- in real AFL contested marks only happen about 30% of the time, if that. I appreciate that for the mechanics of the game this needs to be higher, but at the same time it would be nice if the ball spilled to the ground a bit more often --> creates excitement and tension. Similarly it would be great if it was easier to punch the ball than mark it, at the moment it seems to be the other way around
- and my favourite....need to be able to save team formations between games (argh!)

That's my PC version feedback. I've written probably ten emails to you guys now and am a big fan of the series. I've written a big long list of the things I think you have gotten right in a previous email. Would gladly pay $70 - $80 dollars for the game, was very surprised to see it for $50 when it came out. On the flipside though if Premiership edition is minor tweaks only I empathise with people who believe it should be coming out as a patch
and not as a separate release with another $50 asking price. You might feel justified since Live 2004 was so cheap but ultimately it's a patch-centric society and people like nothing more than a chunky update to their favourite game while waiting for the next full version to arrive.

Anyway thanks very much....keep up the good work! Is there any chance you could please give an indication of when the new Premiership edition features will be announced?

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback, it's always appreciated.
Whilst I cannot confirm exact changes to AFL Live Premiership Edition at this stage, I can tell you that the player radar IS back in the game, and there have also been quite a few animation and gameplay changes made. Of course, the major evolution won't be happening just yet, as the development time between AFL Live 2004 and AFL Live Premiership Edition is far too small to overhaul everything at once.

With regards to the PC version, AFL Live Premiership Edition will still come out as a new product, however, will also still be priced competatively.

This said, AFL Live Premiership Edition will still have significant changes over 2004, and above all, gives us an opportunity to bring the series in line with the AFL season.

Any improvements would be welcome. They did much better with 04 but there's a long way to go. The return of the Radar & the ability to pick the side you want would be a good start.

As for your E-mail to them, I feel your pain brother! :) The whole contested marking situation needs work. The goal kicking is childs play, it was harder in 03!

Don't think 03 had any specific player on it? Pretty sure it was just club logo's.

They copied the Moorcroft mark and put his ankle tat on the player. Even though it didn't look much like him, I guess it's meant to be.

If you haven't seen it, check the main BF board...the (general game) topic continues there.

Something extra.

AFL Live Premiership Edition Q&A

We interview Acclaim regarding the new AFL Live: Premiership Edition game

A few weeks ago, the game AFL Live: Premiership Edition started appearing on release schedules. The release of the next version in the AFL Live series was inevitable, however this game bears a different title and is going to be released at the beginning of the football season rather than the end like the previous two titles.

We contacted Acclaim to try and get some information regarding the title. We interviewed marketing and PR assistant Ben Pollock and present the interview transcript below:

Could you please tell us about the concept behind AFL Live Premiership Edition? Is it a spin-off or is it a full title?

In essence, AFL Live Premiership Edition is a little bit of both. First of all, the game will have an entirely updated fixture and player listing for the 2004 season. We have found that fans of the game are extremely enthusiastic about up to date statistical information, so this gives us a chance to prove that we are taking into account all of their feedback.

Plus, it will have a whole host of additional features and a number of gameplay improvements. However, primarily, this title will finally bring the series in line with the AFL season, which has been a major focus for us ever since AFL Live 2003.

Will this be the only AFL game this year or will a AFL Live 2005 be released later on in the year?

AFL Live Premiership Edition will be the only AFL Live title to hit the shelves this year.

What improvements will be made to AFL Live?

Not only will AFL Live Premiership Edition have, as previously stated, entirely updated fixtures
and player listings based on the 2004 season, it will also feature the All-Australian Team, Heritage Round Jumpers, Updated MCG, Bonus Video Content, Brownlow and Norm Smith Medals, New Wizard Cup Rules, Single and Multiplayer Missions and PS2 Multi-Tap support for up to 4-players.

Also, the development team are currently looking into Xbox Live dashboard support for score uploads, etc And as previously mentioned, there have also been a number of tweaks and improvements to the overall gameplay model.

Will the Xbox version support custom soundtracks?

This will not be a feature in AFL Live Premiership Edition. However, this is a technology that we are investigating for future local development.

Does it worry Acclaim that another AFL live title will be released so soon after AFL Live 2004?

Absolutely not, the AFL Live series of games have proven themselves to be hugely popular, and we are sure that AFL Live Premiership Edition will be equally as successful. Despite the immediate enhancements and additions to the gameplay, the fact that this release brings the series in line with the season will be the major achievement for this title. Which, as I mentioned earlier, has been our primary goal ever since day one, and has also been a frequent highlighted point with our consumer feedback on the games.

We thank Ben Pollock for his time. AFL Live: Premiership Edition is due out for release April 30th, 2004 for the Xbox and PS2. Stay tuned for PALGN for more information regarding AFL Live in the future.
