This is what I think will happen.

I also hope in time there will be a bigger afl members section and smaller medallion club area.

Wont be taking Pies games away from the MCG. The league is contractually obliged to play 14 Collingwood home and away matches at the MCG every year. I do suspect that they may swap some lower drawing games from Etihad for mid range games in the 30-40,000 class. Will also have the effect of giving non victorian sides, the dogs, saints and north more games at the G.

And the reason for Geelong home games at Etihad disappears.

Thank ****ing god.

Now Gil, we can have our 9 HOME games at our HOME stadium at KP thanks.

And our 2 HOME games at MCG please vs Hawks and Pies.

And while we're at it, howz aboutz getting the Hawks, Pies, Dons and Blues down the highway once every 4 years for a Cats home game.

Once every 4 years aint too much to ask is it?

You want to have two home grounds?

Why home games at the G?

You want to have two home grounds?
Not really but as we have a large membership base in 2 locations, we have to try and accommodate them both.

Thus, the 9 and 2 split.

Ideally, all 11 at KP would be preferable.

This is the AFL ... contracts are meaningless and can be changed in a whim

As it says on the MCG website even "although by mutual agreement the sports’ controlling bodies may vary arrangements slightly from time to time"

Player contracts and business contracts arent necessarily the same thing in this industry. The deal can be looked at every 5 years, but read some AFL annual reports and a little history on the mcc dealiings with the AFL, and you'll soon figure that the AFL cant do crap at the MCG oin a whim.

I wonder how this will affect attendances? It would be great to actually see fans on level 2 rather than empty seats due to reserved seating like Access One
Do you really think the AFL would give up the revenue those few seats bring in, in favour of only marginally above average fans? Filling 10% of those seats is probably worth more than filling the rest of the stadium combined. At least to the stadium operators.

I wonder if there still remains the need for a stadium with a capacity of around 30k somewhere near the CBD, maybe even in the MCG precinct

short term, depends on the cost structure of etihad. did the ted whitten game or the VFL grand final end up paying to use etihad? or pre season games?

all smaller crowds. logic tells you you could configure the place for one or two levels only, and not need a ticket checker on every bay, thats 40 bays on 3 levels over 120 staff.

Long term, maybe the growth of melbourne means most games get packed out, and more than a dozen or so are too big for etihad

Maybe we can rip up the ground contract and use it for its original purposes. Highest drawing game gets the G, lowest gets Etihad. 1 game in Melbourne, always at the MCG.

I expect most of the current 'everyone play 1 home game a year' type deals might remain. They've bought it out, but they still need to make money off a full Collingwood game.

First thing would be to fix the teams contracts and make them fair. If they could reduce the cost of reserving a ticket that'd be great.

An increased AFL member section would be great as well - especially for Essendon games. Sick of having to reserve tickets to sit in half decent seats.

AFL and clubs will have access to just under 40k seats at etihad. at MCG they have access to just under 75k MCC and medallion resrves discounted.

A huge attendance at MCG for a given game may not mean the AFL wouldnt make more at etihad.

the figure to make it worthwhile financially to have a game at MCG would be maybe 55-60k

Only a dozen h&A games beat that figure, but there is a requirement to play 45 games there.

Great news for tenant clubs.

I really hope that the seating allocations change over the bet few years also.

The AFL reserve area should be extended, and some level 1 bays should be opened for general admission for certain games (most games, let's be honest. The pockets in particular are often empty which isn't a great look). Good for the fans and for the members.

There never was a need for that.

They wouldn't make more at Etihad off a smaller crowd. The MCC write a cheque to the AFL based on the amount of members that attend each game, those 25k seats aren't free of revenue.

who knows. I hope they can see the benefit to fans and the game if those seats are actually used rather than reserved for people who pay big bucks but rarely show up

What benefit? It makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

The AFL aren't giving up $20M anytime soon and they'd be crazy to do so. That's $4M per tenant club. Or if they cut it by half an extra 5000 people per game. That ain't happening any time soon

I'm not sure what planet people are on in this thread. They want the AFL to give up revenue or the whole venue based on nothing.o_O:eek:

To what end? because people deserve a chance to watch their sport rather than people paying not to attend.

So the best average of the Etihad clubs this year was 20000 less than capacity

Who are all these unicorns that are magically going to appear to pay more to sit on level 2 that weren't already there and were locked out of a seat?

And how do you reckon the clubs (essendon) would react if the afl went to them and said we have to take $4m from you because we are giving up that much revenue so that we can sell seats on level 2 for less?

GTFO is the answer.

If level 2 was available to the general public or members of the clubs or AFL I bet it would be used more and draw more to the games. In fact I prefer to go to the MCG because I can get a better seat despite the fact it doesnt sellout. If that means it costs the AFL some dough in order to keep their fans happy, and engage more people then go for it. It's not like the code is broke

And turn thousands and thousands of people away? Geelong people need to be realistic. Ur joint will never hold enough people for those type of games to be played down there
