I'm surprised they're not advocating for their own break away league. The AFLPA Doping Is Completely Kosher League.

18 Rounds of Essondon vs an esky of unlabeled syringes.

The only time they actually do anything for the players is during the pay negotiations and even then they won't upset the AFL applecart.

The rest of the time they act as part of the AFL PR machine as shown in the last 24 hours - played stalking horse about the WADA code not being applicable for AFL...
Yeah they get more monies from the AFL every 5 years when the new CBA is negotiated around the new TV deal, negoiate a deal for their $$ and the players cap amounts, and then they go and invent programs so the players can spend PA monies collected from the AFL. They have been pretty compliant since the AFL in 1998 decided its better to get Demetriou inside the tent pissing out, rather than outside pissing in.

Marsh is here to make his name and even the players woke up and knew they were too compliant. But Marsh is there to take the players share of AFL industry revenues from 21.4% to 25 or 26%.

According to the AFLPA 2014 annual report player fees were $501,821.

There are roughly 756 AFL players (42 players per team but could be a little bit out) - that would amount to an average fee of just over $660 per player.

The bulk of the AFLPA income is from "operating grant receipts" in other words payments from the AFL - that total is $17,915,577.

Edited

Few more dollars than the Coaches Association  That's a real waste of money IMHO.

He also showed he has reading comprehension issues if he can't understand how CAS upheld the appeal. They even put a heading in that section and helpfully put numbers to each paragraph so it could be easily found again... How he got to be CEO without being able to understand a document like that is a big indictment on his lack of ability to function in the job.

He got the role because boys club.

If he continues after being exposed as completely misguided about his role and the role of his organisation then the players and AFL are the true fools. He's been incomprehensibly stupid on this.

I dont know what you mean by boys club, but he was head of the cricketers association, they get at least 25% of cricket industry revenue, he's a hard nut, the players want at least 25% of AFL industry revenue from the next CBA and that's why they went after him to become CEO of their association.

By boys club I mean he's only ever worked in sports administration (Port Adelaide, Athletics, cricket and now footy.) He doesn't have the credentials you'd normally expect a CEO to have before appointment (was member services prior to his appointment as chair of athletics association.) I'm not convinced cricket outcome(25%) wasn't on cards anyway given international trends. His public advocacy recently and in past seems clumsy and not ideal for his members. In these roles public comments must be strategic and strengthen your case.

Hope that explains my reasons for using term.

Is Paul Marsh grandstanding for Paul Marsh? Every decision just drags this out. Time the players generally pulled this guy into the real world.

From Oct 2014
“The players do not intend to respond to the show-cause notices,” AFL Players' Association chief executive Paul Marsh confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

The case now looks destined to head to the AFL anti-doping Tribunal.

Marsh declared the players “remain steadfast in their belief they have done nothing wrong”.

“This process has already taken up to 21 months - about half the average AFL player’s career,” he said.

“The prospect that players would have to endure a third season with these proceedings hanging over their heads is simply unacceptable.

“The players want this matter resolved quickly and fairly.

“It is time to bring this matter to an end.”

How does Marsh reconcile his actions with 'The players want this matter resolved quickly and fairly'. Got to call bulldust on that claim.

the AFLPA are a joke .
they must be the only union in the country that is funded by the employer .
As a direct result of this they are dependent on the AFL .
which is one of the main reasons why they are so disfunctional !

What do the AFLPA do other than demand more money for the players and more time off?

That's all they do.

They act as part of the AFL PR machine.

And a little bit of player welfare stuff.

Spot on !

The AFLPA is owned & controlled by the AFL .
They will always have to follow the AFL script , until they break the AFL shackles & become an independent body .
For obvious reasons the AFL would strongly oppose this !

Surely he could have had someone in his office prepare a summary of the CAS findings if he was too lazy to read it himself. Biggest muppet out of this whole thing. And that's a pretty high bar to jump.

As I pointed out that CAS had already helped him out by some handy dandy bolded headings and numbers for each section to make things easy to find!

The most damning aspect for the AFLPA is that during 2012 not one Essendon player quietly made a call to their union to ask about the new-fangled injection regime the club had introduced to the players. It goes to show how little the players, Essendon ones at least, thought of their union.

Probably mentioned in the 4 Corners thread but I thought it was appropriate to stick it in here but the AFLPA and Paul Marsh were shown to be flogs last night in the 4 Corners story. At no point have they helped out Hunter. 4 Corners completely ignored them as an irrelevancy. So much for standing by and supporting one of your members, even if he is an ex member now.

They are such a disingenuous organisation.
We're all about the players and their welfare, except you know when they really need it and they don't have a high profile.

Self-serving media hungry organisation at its finest is all they are.

:thumbsu: that's why Paul Marsh got the gig - time the light was shined on the officeholders aka the players.

very dodgy from day one these buggers ...

AFLPA has done more for drugs in sport than Dank.
There lack of action for the victimised and the proactive stance in denying that the players did nothing wrong breeds the message that they are hard done by. They have been found guilty and they need to respond accordingly by focussing on there welfare moving forward, taking care of those who are being treated poorly (Hal) bu there clubs.
It is not there job to challenge or judge the decision, this does not serve the players at all.
They are there to represent all players and that means the ones who don't take PEDs too.
They should be doing everything in there power to ensure the game is drug free for the saftey and well being of the players.
Marsh has failed miserably and it is embarrassingly evident that he has been compromised by the AFL.
