I'm surprised Lilly Pearce wasn't picked up. An athletic 187cm player could've been a good development pick.

Really pleased by how many are from the academy
Our zone/academy has been stacked with U18 AA players since the AFLW was first established: 2019 - Ellie Hampson, Serene Watson, Kitara Whap-Farrar. 2018 - Lauren Bella, Serene Watson. 2017 - Lauren Bella, Arianna Clarke, Kalinda Howarth. 2016 - Ruby Blair, Arianna Clarke, Shaleise Law. It's very likely some 2020 draftees like Bradfield, D'Arcy, M.Levi or Single would have been U18 AAs this year as well had it been a normal year. I'm also very confident T.Levi will be an U18 AA next year and possibly a few others if they develop well over the next 12 months. We certainly don't have any issues with talent coming through our zone/academy year after year.

I suppose the really pleasing thing for our club is that a lot of these girls were multitalented in other sports and reached high levels of representation but elected to pursue footy with us anyway. Maddison Levi and Lucy Single were both in the Rugby 7s excellence program at Miami High and reached state level representation (M.Levi was even voted the best player in one of the national rugby tournaments) but took part in the AFLQ Schools Cup for Miami and absolutely fell in love with our game after previously having no attachment. What a fantastic endorsement their stories are for our club/junior pathway. Then you have a true all rounder from Townsville in Daisy D'Arcy who represented Queensland in Aussie rules, Rugby 7s, Soccer AND Cricket but eventually chose to follow our pathway over three other sports. Mackay's Wallis Randell also represented Queensland in basketball but made the transition to footy a few years ago as well.

Annise Bradfield has a great story too but for a different reason. Our current AFLW best and fairest winner Jamie Stanton happens to be Bradfield's P.E. teacher at Southport High and also coaches her in the school's AFL excellence program. It's fantastic to see all these local girls getting the opportunity to play in the AFLW for us but in reality a lot of these girls would have been drafted anyway because we have strong junior female pathways on the Gold Coast that have been in place well before our AFLW team was established. It should improve even more next year when the Southport Sharks are granted entry into the QAFLW.

Anyway, well done to all the girls who were drafted tonight! Can't wait to see the girls play again early next year.

This it was so important to grant us an AFLW licence because girls footy is absolutely booming in Queensland and it’s not just a numbers game either, we have so much quality players too! Credit to everyone involved. Seems like Fiona and Lake have set up such a strong program and amazing culture!

How great is this! The video the Suns posted (from what I presume is the Miami High school hall) really gives you a great sense of community within the GC female footy circle.

Two of the senior leaders at our club in Sally Riley and Jamie Stanton taught our draftees Lucy Single (Miami), Maddison Levi (Miami) and Annise Bradfield (Southport) at school over the last 12 months and now they are in teammates. Plus, Teagan Levi (Miami) will join them next year. You can't write this sort of stuff!

I didn't even know we had a partnership with Miami High but obviously our club has done a tremendous job at the grassroots level to secure talents like the Levi sisters and Lucy Single who were all heading down the Rugby 7s pathway until they gave footy a go at the AFLQ Schools Cup. Even Annise Bradfield was a promising hockey prospect (she made the U19 South Coast hockey team at 12 years of age!!!) but fortunately for us Bradfield's neighbour back then happened to be the President of the Labrador Tigers and he convince Annise to try football. The rest is history.

Our club is set up really well to have a lot of future success in the AFLW and women's footy is thriving here. Next step forward is an AFLW Grand Final appearance!

We have a new 2km time trial queen!

Enter Lucy Single. Born in New Zealand but very much raised on the Gold Coast. Get around her!

THE Gold Coast Suns have plans to turn one of its training ovals into an elite AFLW training facility with grandstands so it can host AFLW games at the ground.
The Suns have three ovals at their disposal, with the club’s womens team currently using Metricon Stadium for home games during the AFLW season.

Gold Coast revamped part of it’s training and administration centre to build change rooms for the female players have now revealed plans to upgrade the western oval, located directly in front of it’s headquarters, that can cater for their games in the next two years.

“We have got some really big plans to take the number two oval and turn that into an AFLW elite training facility with grandstands so we can have AFLW games hosted at our site at Carrara,” Suns chairman Tony Cochrane said.

“We want to create some big opportunities there. We have a world class hub going on there now and we have been the catalyst for that hub.

“We want to build on that and make sure the women get everything to the same standard asd the men.”

The revelations come as Gold Coast’s premier sporting identities believe the city can rise from the ashes of COVID to become a capital for sports events and the biggest contributor of elite female athletes.

Cochrane, declared the city’s ability to house the majority of the AFL’s teams throughout COVID in 2020, using the infrastructure developed for the successful 2018 Commonwealth Games, expertise from city leaders and accommodation in the tourist hot spot, put the city on the map of sporting bodies.

That would be awesome! Metricon is 'too big' but having an AFL Womens venue at Carrara would be awesome! Can also host VFL games too
This is a really positive step forward for the club as a whole. We don't want the girls to feel left out by having to play home games at the Southport Sharks. It's far better to keep all our teams training and playing within the same precinct and building a secondary 5k capacity venue with grandstands that has Metricon Stadium as its backdrop would be really cool. If we're ever in a position to host the AFLW Grand Final then we can just have the girls play 50 metres away at Metricon so capacity will never be a problem. We have three ovals at our disposal and each oval should serve an individual purpose for either our men's, women's or academy team/s. As already mentioned, a 5k capacity venue can also host VFL games and even important academy fixtures/events so it will be used outside of the AFLW season as well.

We want to be a completely unified club from top to bottom and Carrara really is the home of Gold Coast footy now.

The female academy members for 2021 below. The standout and one to watch is definitely Teagan Levi who is probably already good enough to be playing in the AFLW. The Cockatoo-Motlap twins (Laquoiya and Litonya) are two more to keep an eye on. Their uncle Che Cockatoo-Collins had a very good AFL career with Essendon/Port Adelaide and their cousin Nakia Cockatoo is a current Brisbane Lions player. The Yokayi Footy Show also did a story on the two of them here. I think both will be moving down to the Gold Coast this year from Cairns and I assume they will play for either Bond Uni or Coolangatta in the QAFLW in the upcoming season.
