AFLW AFLW06 - Season 2022

Best wishes to Georgia Patrikios and I hope she is back for the 2022 AFLW season.

Fantastic footballer and the comp is poorer should she miss.

If it's vaccine related I hope it all gets sorted out. Whether you are pro or anti we should all agree that AFLW needs their fit footballers playing.

On a side issue Georgia was one of two players who Essendon had front and center in their push for a license back in 2017. If she sits out the year and Essendon come in next year, well, who knows.

The other player was Michaela Long, daughter of Michael, and she had the chance to play AFLW in 2017 but sat out waiting for Essendon to come in. I am not even sure she is playing footy any more.
Yea what a shame , only player I really noticed for the saints , hope it gets sorted

given that it's the obvious conclusion to draw, considering the day before announcement of the AFL vax policy
a huge loss it would be, but the rule has been set in stone now, agreed by all in the league (AFLPA, AFL, AFLW)
no jab, no play, your delisted/contract terminated, is the new world in sport all over the planet (soccer, basketball, tennis etc)

yeah anything other than COVID vax related
I don’t expect it will be relaxed , not in vic , requirement as an authorised worker like a heavy truck licence is a requirement to drive a semi . Very cleverly worded that’s it not mandatory but it is.

Taking a glance at pre-season training at other clubs and it seems everyone is looking bloody fit.

Think we are going to see another step up or two in athleticism this coming season.

If you haven't done the work you are going to be a fair way behind because it looks like most have been training since the siren sounded for the end of the 2021 season.

Like it. In my mind Katie has always been a permanent forward. No coincidence that when they abandoned this midfield stuff last season Katie went back to her very best and the team fortunes were far better.

Really looking forward to Kelly playing and also will be interesting how they use Seymour who I think could really be something.

Reckon they’ll combine well, PK looked to read the ball really nicely in flight and take a solid grab in the highlights. Will be a great tandem in the ruck after trying to hide sabs for 2 seasons

The Bulldogs have picked up Alice Edmonds to replace a season long inactive player. Always thought Alice was entertaining on the club vids but struggled in the ruck out on the park. Gabby Seymour a far superior player, still it will be interesting to see how she goes.

Bit of a battler always got the impression she was like a tall in the local leagues given a run in the ruck for no other reason than she was tall

Faaaark!
Our new rebounding defender in a moon boot is not what we want to see.

Is that Maddie shev. I think Ellie mc is in rehab , bloody hope she’s right for the start . Such a short season don’t want stars missing a slab of games . Gee the squad looks so much fitter than prev seasons , looking forward to the new year

Yep its Maddie.

Not great as a leg can heavily impact a pre-season.

On the plus side, season is still a touch over 8 weeks away so still time on her side but she looked pretty fit anyway and would have built a fairly good fitness base over the previous 3 seasons she has played.

Who is your toughest opponent?
To be honest, on the wing, you barely see people because you're by yourself the whole time. Ellie Mac (McKenzie) is pretty scary to play on, because she's so tall and strong. I had a one-on-one with her in the game against Richmond, right in front of Richmond's goals, and I was praying she wasn't going to take a speccy on me.

Quite a few others will be joining you soon enough Mimi

Just on Ellie McK, I was watching the NAB Girls final in her draft year I think, and at one point in the match she did exactly the same thing as when she ran down the wing in last season's Geelong game swatting away players like they were flies.

First time I'd seen the vision. It wasn't in her draft highlight package but it was better than an of those highlights.

As she gets fitter and fitter she's going to be a legitimate gun. She was above the level immediately in her 1st season. I really hope they manage to extend the amount of games per season because she (and all the girls really) only got better the more games she got under her belt.

100% You only have to look at the BBLW as the perfect example. The ball striking we see now compared to a few short years ago is like chalk and cheese.

I know it's difficult given the circumstances with covid etc but not having the women in a full time elite program is not only preventing them from reaching their absolute best but its also robbing us fans of seeing what would be the greatest female athletes in the world in action.

Ellie and co in a full time, well funded AFL program would be amazing to watch.

So looking forward to seeing her develop , she has nat Fyfe like qualities , win the ball , strong and a great mark ,,and the confidence and belief to really take the game on , we re lucky to have her in the y&b and she seems to have settled in really well , go Ellie

Anyone just needs to open their eyes to see how much fitter the squads look compared to a few years ago where they were a bunch of Park footballers , not athletes. Super fit now and the game will be better for it

I'll admit that before the last season I couldn't see out a whole game cause of the quality but the improvement league wide last year was nuts. It's meant there are players like Sabrina Frederick (imo) that have already been left behind in terms of the athletic ability required to play the game.

Really I think they should be playing games now. Rather than having to read countless inane articles about the draft our footy fix should be with the AFLW currently.

They delayed the season in order to have a clean run at it wi5out covid limitations

Yes, what I meant though is if they can shift the end date to accommodate COVID then in future seasons why not permanently have that the end date, be playing games from this time of year and get more games in? Obviously with border issues at the minute they can't be playing the season currently

My worry is they are going to increase the amount of teams and not boost the amount of games

im sure that in the future the game will settle on 13-15R, I think 14 with a final series sounds about right , still a road to go particularly with NEW entrants next season

I think one of the issues of season timing at the moment is staffing levels at clubs being massively reduced compared to pre-covid days and personnel are having to fulfil duel roles. To play games at this time of the year they would have had to have started AFLW pre-season pretty much when the men's start their break which would require increase in staffing levels at every club. I think it's one of the reasons they delayed the AFLW season.

The AFL is like any company. Once you cut your workforce by X percent and people find a way to make it work, very rarely is there any turning back.
