The AFL isn't completely throwing out the preseason competition yet, it's only one round robin week of AFLX then two weeks of JLT Community preseason matches. I guess they're just testing the waters to see if it works and if people will care about it. I think it will be a bit of a struggle to watch because I find it hard to watch preseason as it is, let alone this watered down version of the game that will be probably be full of kids and at best fringe players.

I'm looking at getting into playing footy again but don't think I could commit for a full season. AFL 9s doesn't appeal to me that much, but something like AFLX could.

Yep, this. Sounds like it will be a really intensive workout in what will likely be trying conditions. Would rather not risk players in some AFL experiment. Pre-season games are a necessary evil, these are not.

Why though, rugby 10s and 7s work so do the Auckland 9s in the NRL but our game isn't compatible for that

Being played on a soccer sized pitch is the key to international expansion.
I’m happy for the AFL to pursue this, and I’m happy for the elite players to be used to showcase it.

Think it will be as popular as Harvey Weinstein amongst female bike riders in Northcote. The focus for mine should be AFLW starting earlier in the year than it does.

On a side note, the intensity and size of indoor soccer is proven to especially utilise turning, passing and moving to space skills for players of the 11 a side outdoor field game....

I haven't read much about it... I wonder if the smaller AFLX will prove similiarly beneficial to improving certain skills for footy players in their off season?? That's probably its best hope of being rolled out at grass roots level nationally.

We have AFLW, soon AFLX but what will they do with AFLY and AFLZ?
