Why are we there?

Because they asked for our help, the country was in anarchy with basic mob rule, people being murdered in street's, because the UN is completely useless and in the end Australia was/is the only country that is in the best position to help.

The only thing wrong with us over there is that it took so long to send troops we should have done it earlier. They asked us to intervene 2 years before we actually got round to doing so.

As for the rioting - seems that basically the former deputy of an allegedly corrupt government won a secret ballot of MPs where there were accusations of corruption (apparently some Solomon Island's MPs went as cheap as A$25). People over there are fed up with corruption and seeing a guy they see as corrupt win a secret ballot must be bloody annoying.

I think the rational is; to stop people slaughtering each other.
But I suspect there is another more deep seated reason.

we have an election on the horizon Murray, time to deflect the attention to things that dont have us on the back foot, with the WTFs, so the focus now is the FTB, Papuan refugees and now add the Solomons. ACA will have a field day with those 3 topics leading up to the next election. ;)

Yep, like PK often said "Just throw the switch to vaudeville"

Expansion of influence in the region.
Or as some would say - good old imperialism

The place was a shambolic mess. None of the Pacific really co operate with us or even vote with us in the UN, or try the Whaling commission. The real imperialism is by the Chinese Generally or the Malays in PNG

AS for this being an election issue as Cogga says no chance. We just had personal Choppers medical teams in Pakistan, the press didn't put 2 lines in the paper about it. This will go the same unless it flares up

Q, first off, we had the PM bowling a ball in a "for the cameras" cricket match, but there wasnt much more, granted. But at that time, the requirement was one of bolstering our reputation that had waned because of our involevement in the "war to rid the world of iraqui WMD", with the commercial networks picking it up. Good news huh? LOL
I will give you the tip, ACA will run with the Solomon's thing big time, TT will follow suit. You need to get with the page man, the TV is where you need to make you mark, the majority of the population read papers for the form guide and the sport and the entertainmanet guides, the other stuff re. what's happening in the world, goes undetected unless a TV journo runs with it.
ANd knowing how C7 and C9 are so not aligned to the govts PR strategy, i would be tipping, we are in pre election campaign mode. Why, in the end we will save the Solomons, just after we "saved" the Iraquis, and even more poignant after we were suppose to have saved the Solomons before. ;)

How far are we out from an election? 50 things will come to peoples mind before the Solomons

http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/pm-commits-110-troops-to-solomons/2006/04/19/1145344129155.html

He said 110 soldiers from Townsville would leave on four RAAF C130 transport planes today and arrive in the Solomons tonight.

An extra 70 Australian Federal Police (AFP) would also be sent there, he said.

Mr Howard, speaking in Brisbane, said the commitment followed a written request from the Solomon Islands government

We are by far the most powerful country in the region and no one mentions that NZ is there as are Fiji and PNG troops, if they ask for help we should ignore them and let them slaughter each other?

The Solomons are a mess. Violent rioting, endemic corruption, civic disorder, etc. They were a far bigger mess before the RAMSI in 2003.

If the Australians did nothing then people would be up in arms about not providing assistance.

Some of the posts in this thread are just an excuse to complain no matter what is actually happening in the Solomons.

New Zealand also has forces there - are they also trying the imperialism or election approach?

LMAO, how far are we out? here is a tip, we are as far as Howard wants us to be, which IMO, is fast becoming closer and closer, they need an election before more Sh-ite hits the fan and the Sh-ite dam bursts, i.e. Oil on the up, inflation on the up, interest rates on the up, so you can gather from that we better get another 4 year term, at the expense of the year we have left, because if we go the length, we cant thrust dollars into people's pockets. ;)

so fill me in Q, why were we there in the first place? ;)
SInce 98 The Solomons asked us 3 or 4 times to intervene under the Pacific Islands Forum. No other country has the logistics or capability to launch such an action. We refused. In 2003 it got so bad we had to do something, firstly to help them and secondly to stop having a failed state on our doorstep.

yeah but who asked us to intervene? the govt that is asking us again? Is that who? If so, those who it is asking us to intervene against, must be pretty ********ed at this govt, again dont you think? Doesnt it make you wonder why? ;)

hold on, i asked youif the govt that asked for help back then is once again doing the same. Dotn see it as people crying for help, i see it as a govt crying for help, and it makes me wonder why.
On the slaughter thing man, i dont condone innocent people getting slaughtered, but i also dont condone oppresive govts being aided in their oppresion of their people. Now if the people cant revolt because we stick our nose into their business then i do have an issue with the govt. ;)

What? There are two tribes trying to kill each other, no oppression on a dictatorial govt routine. And no it hasn't been the same Govt, they are like Italians use to be you can count a year if you've had 5 PM's . This whole episode with the 17 police officers was over the elction of a new PM.

Solomon Islands governments are characterized by weak political parties and highly unstable parliamentary coalitions. They are subject to frequent votes of no confidence, and government leadership changes frequently as a result. Cabinet changes are common.

geee, looky here,
"The bulk of the population depend on agriculture, fishing, and forestry for at least part of their livelihood", but "The islands are rich in undeveloped mineral resources such as lead, zinc, nickel, and gold."

Now i am taking a wild guess here that the Aussie govt is doing what its doing to make sure the bulk of the people dont lose their dependence on agriculture, fishing, and forestry, leaving the other part, the non bulk of the population, guess who?, to depend on those poorest of commodities, like zinc, nickel and gold. You know the ones I mean, the ones that have the people up in arms saying that they are corrupt, and dont want to have to depend on "agriculture, fishing, and forestry " for their livelyhood.
Just a wild guess. ;)

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=96245

"Overnight, shops and buildings were burned and looted when demonstrators took to the streets after the nation's parliament chose a new prime minister."

dont think its "two tribes go to war" stuff man. Me thinks its one people ********ed off big time with someone "chosen" not by them to lead the place.

Funny stuff,

"The violence is the worst unrest in the capital since Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific governments intervened in 2003 to end years of bloody ethnic gang conflict.

Australian police were also facing allegations that they aggravated the situation by firing tear gas at protesters who claim yesterday's poll, which elected Snyder Rini as Prime Minister, was rigged."

So back when we last went in it was to end years of bloody ethnic violence, and now we are doing the same? is that how I am suppose to comprehend the above text?
I am trying hard to see it but somehow it escapes me. Maybe someone can fill me in on the difference between a ********ed off population and gang warfare. ;)
