Once again a disappointing effort from our Eagles. Got killed in the guts and did stuff all in the first 1/4 in defense. Did much better after that. What could tell the story, we have 5 people in our captaincy group and only 1 played, and not in his normal position. And most of our forward line out so guess you could say that, but it isn't a good sign when players are still recovering this far in.

Doesnt Matter Eagleskickass, hopefully the Eagles and the Crows kick some Victorian ARSE when the real stuff starts!

I didnt see much of the game, but after quarter time yous outscored them, so maybe a few probs yous have to sort out there.

Yup, the midfield were crap. The rucking was pretty good but we were murdered when it hit the deck. Hurry up with the real season and real games with the real first 18

Ah well, sweet liquor eases the pain

The game was perfect for the Eagles.
We gained heaps out of it. The youngsters got lots of experince. The new guys were tried all over the ground and some of the ruck set pieces worked a treat. We had no prime defence, attack or midfield but there was nothing to play for. Resting the stars has to be right. We have too much travel in the regular season.
What did we get out of an Ansett cup we clearly were not interested in competing in.
1) The return of Wirra
2) Troy Wilson, a huge assett in an area we were weak.........oh he'll play CHF for sure not FF, although we do have an option now that we haven't had for some time and that means opponents can't bet on Scotty being the only path to goal.
3) Glassy and Fletch. They look set to be regulars, that's why they were rested.
4) Sierra, Prior, Merenda, Harding replacing
the injured Bluey, the lazy Gehrig and Metro. We look to have so much better depth and we haven't seen Taylor or Collica yet.
5) Gardy looks great and Cox is learning quickly.
6) The second year player looked so good and add Humm to the list. He looked a real great prospect.

We have to wait until round 1 to see the real Eagles but the prospect is exciting.

We really have a depth of talent both now and for the next 5 years at least.

And just look at that forward line and half forward line, brilliant. And can be rotated with Sierra, Merenada, Embley etc as good options, not to mention Gardy going forward.

Another positive is the apparent versatility of a lot of the players. Players like McIntosh, wirra, morrison, sierakowski, gardiner, read, roo and co can play in numerous positions. Last year the eagles did not have any of that. Not enough depth in any of the positions for someone like macca, wirra or morrison to move out of the back-line.

Things are looking positive for this season and the future. Lets hope injuries don't end this teams prospects.

eagleskickass, I guess there are 2 ways to look at the game. Sure, we lost on the scoreboard but really apart from the first quarter we beat St Kilda in the other 3 quarters. I think our mistake was putting Harding on Hamill who kicked 3 goals straight away on him and got the Saints rolling there. The move of Embley onto Hamill was far too late.

Very impressed with Jeremy Humm (sounds like someone meditating whenever they say "Humm") and again with Troy Wilson. I want the TAB to have bets on which player he will knock out cold first this season! Also Collica was alright and kicked a few goals, he might be a lot more comfortable back in his home state this year.

What you have to realise is that Hamill is a classy strong player and neither Harding nor Embley (although he can be proud of himself) would normally play on him. It would be Jako with Ash as backup and even Trent Carrol has the muscle to deal with him.
So chalk that encounter up to a great experience for Embers.

Definately 1 positive thing is those young players showing what they have to offer and the recruits doing pretty well.
Frodo, I agree with most of the team but just a couple of differences. Wirrapunda a swap with Merenda and Embley in instead of Donnelly. I would love to see Pe.Matera playing wing but if he does it will only be for short stints, He's too old and injury prone to play wing for long and for the whole season. And the Co-Captain on the bench. Yes, he will go there but not at the start I don't think.

Another encouraging performance. I thought a big problem last year was if were getting beaten we would drop our heads and end up getting belted. But i thought we closed out the game against the Saints pretty well. Our spine didnt play Cummings Kemp Jako and McIntosh. No real CHF to speak of. So with all our main players not in the KEY positions i thought we did quite well.

Im actually really excited about this year, i dont think finals footy will be possible but a definite improvement from last year.

Frodo i thought your line up for rd 1 was a bit wayward.

I think having Turnball or Cox in the side is a must. We must have that back up ruckman so we can release Gardy to go forward, he can be very damaging when forward kinda like Spider Everitt. Sirra can also ruck so he is an option.
