I don't think age is so important, but rather where you are in your lives.
The big problem with say an 19 year old going out with someone who is say 35, is not the difference in age per se, but usually the difference in what you want at that stage of your life. Generally speaking, the younger person is still into going out and having fun, living life up a lot more, while the 35 yo is more settled and living quite a different life. This is why the big age differences often don't work.
However, this is only a generalisation and sometimes you do get these big age differences working because the people just happen to be looking for the same thing despite the age difference.
Another major problem with large age gaps, more so when the younger person is quite young, is the differences in life experience. The older person has usually experienced a lot more and has more things to talk about, has seen and done more things, etc, and the younger person may not stimulate them mentally or may feel uncomfortable with hte partner's older friends. However, again this is only a generalisation and doesn't necessarily hold true.
I have seen or experienced both sides of the above two issues, hence why I note the generalisations are more common (and logical), however exceptions naturally occur.
