Directed everywhere except where it should be.

chopped up in close where its tough and hard. Noticed a certain few putting in short steps and pretty obvious avoidance of physical contact. Looked intimated.

Why again them?

Very bitter pill to swallow.

Why again them?

So, we've now lost 4 of our last 13 against them. It's hardly a case of "yet again."

I don't think we were that sharp tonight, but it wasn't a terrible performance. You've got to put it in perspective. It was still close and could have gone either way. They wanted it a bit more than us, but I reckon that's to be expected given the circumstances entering the match. They were underdogs, 0-2 coming off a wooden spoon, and with a new coach. In each of your 22 games, you are going to get matches where one team is a bit more fired up than another, due to the circumstances entering the match. It's very hard to be switched on every week for all circumstances.

It's not as if Carlton played poorly, or anything. I think we'll hit back hard this week.

ALL of them were unexpected. Let's look at them briefly:

99' Prelim - no explanation needed.
2001 Round 3 - defending premier vs. middle of the pack side, played like crap and lost
2001 Round 18 - rematch of round 3 upset, swore we wouldn't let them beat us this time, then lost
2003 Round 3 - Sheedy makes idiotic comments about salary cap, team goes out and lays an egg.

Anybody see a pattern here? This is four times now recently that we have underestimated these guys, and came out looking like morons.

ENOUGH.

Geez Smokin, none of ours were unexpected of course, because we were bloody favourites for nearly all of them. That's what happens when you've had a good team, mate. A win by them is always unexpected simply because we've had the better list. So, when they occasionally break through against us (4 of the last 13) it is unexpected.

I don't want to have an "unexpected" win against then, because it means we must be underdgos (hence struggling) for this to happen.

"4 of last 13" - you can twist stats to suit any argument, ie from today back to that game, it is Ess 5, Carl 4. In that time, Essendon has peaked as one of the greatest sides of alltime, and stayed around the top bracket. Carlton has experienced it's worst period in over 100 years of AFL/VFL football. 2 of those 5 wins came when Carlton were nothing but a mess of a club.

But my "unexpected" term wasnt meant as simply a TAB sportsbet $1.95 'dog. We have tripped up in games where even one-eyed Carlton fans couldnt see them winning.

It's the same story, we keep talking about that game, we arnt gonna underestimate em and still they are like a boogey side.

Did you listen to bomber radio last sunday? Rioli on it commented on how 99 has definitely scared and Carlton games are always treated differently.

There is a psychological hurdle there with playing them. That is evident. And in those loses - its the same story. We look uncharacteristically soft and seemingly intimidated by em. My family is split ess/car and these matchups i talk about and analyse most. It is a common theme the past few years.

Now I hope we do rebound strongly, and we are going to have to.

Footscray is a team which of late we have struggled with even with our "great" side. Collingwood is a 50-50 coinflip IMO due to the enormity of the occasion, then a trip to Perth.

We must rebound strongly from this. We have a hard draw this season, in regards to playing sides we historically dont overly love, twice.

Dont get me wrong, i still rate us and we will rebound, im pretty sure of that. But we were ordinary last night, dont kid yourself.
