Akhtar breaks 100mph barrier
Sunday 23 February 2003, 14:30PM

Shoaib Akhtar became the first bowler to officially clock 100 miles-per-hour (160kph) in international cricket during Pakistan's Group A World Cup match against England at Newlands.

Bowling in only his second over, Akhtar warmed up with a 158.4 kph (98.43 mph) delivery and gradually built up speed to finish the maiden over with 161.3 kph (100.23 mph).

The delivery remains the quickest recorded in an official cricket match - Test or one-day.

England opener Nick Knight was struggling to middle the ball with Akhtar bowling at top pace, and in the next over an attempted hook by the left hander sailed over the wicketkeeper for six off a top edge.

Akhtar bowled 160.2 kph (99.54 mph) in a one-day international against New Zealand in Lahore last year but the International Cricket Council (ICC) refused to recogniSe it because the speed gun was not officially sanctioned.

Akhtar and Australian fast bowler Brett Lee are considered the fastest bowlers in world cricket.

Lee's top recorded speed is 157.6 kph (97.93 mph) during a test against South Africa last year.

Pity he cant bowl (well accurately anyway !!!!) more pre-occupied with being the fastest bowler in the world. Just proves what an individualistic side Pakistan is (And ****ed off because I tipped them to make the SF)

He has already bowled faster than that during this World Cup.

Rubbish. Akthar takes wickets more often than both McGrath and Warne in both Tests and One Dayers, he simply goes for a few more runs (not that much more) but that is understandable seeing as though he is bowling so quickly. The quicker the bowler the easier it is to score runs from them, make no mistake though, if it comes to taking wickets Akthar is one of the best, probably the best in the business.

Aswell as bowling the fastest ball in history Akthar also top scored for Pakistan scoring 43 from 16 balls including 5 4's and 3 6's, not bad from the 11th batsmen!!!

Should have put some money on that double :)

Good, I have his autograph...maybe I can make a decent sports collectible frame out of it.

Does anyone have a large picture of Akhtar in a decent pose?

I was thinking of getting the autograph framed with a large poster and a small engraved plaque...:D

So ... let me get this straight. People were prepared to trust that Jeff Thomson clocked 100 mph based on 1975 TECHNOLOGY, but not from a speed gun designed, built and employed in the last few years !?
