About Alby or Jessie??

Goodness, the mere mention of that name sucks me into the dark and miserable vortex of Foostcray Football Club circa late 70s. Alby was a full-back, and...well...he tried hard.

Actually, he ended up at St. Kilda - I don't think he played more than a handful of games for them though. Localyokel, was that part of the Tweedale deal?

Thanks for the info Jim and WWB.

Alby, but if anyone has any info on Jesse, don't be shy in posting it.

BTW: Are we talking "he tried hard" as in Bartlett "tries hard"? i.e. hopefully the kid hasn't inherited too much of his old man's footy 'smarts'?

I've got a footy card of him somewhere. Now, there's a cult figure if there ever was one. Bulldogs1954 and Flying Egg, I urge - nay - I COMMAND you to include Alby on your Kingsley shrine in a special retro section!

Jesse's been playing fullback at Geelong I think. He's in the Vic country squad also I think. I didn't think Alby had played 50 games but how quickly we forget (though it's a pretty hard name to forget). I guess he was the Geelong Falcons father/son one mentioned a few weeks back that we couldn't work out.

WB, Alby certainly wasn't in Bartlett's class - and as we are aware, that's really saying something.

No, Alby had 'prefer others' written all over him. Not a brilliant pedigree for young Jesse. Let's just hope and pray that he was adopted (I'd settle for Kelvin Templeton's lovechild).

correct again K9. He stands around 190cm. it will be interesting to see what happens with Dean Whitten.

father/son

Was also going to comment on Dean Whitten. Has been playing centre for the Jets and been doing well, by the paper that is, I haven't actually seen him play.

So will be interseting which way the Dogs go if there are several available. How does this work in the draft situation. Can they lock both in?

Yes - we can take both. The first uses a 3rd round pick, the 2nd a 4th round pick, etc.

We can get 2 father/sons can't we?
This mornings paper mentions how Richmond are likely to go for Robbie McGhies son!

Name some son's of ordinary players that have gone on to be stars?

Was told by someone who plays with the jets who doesnt even know my allegiance to the doggies that his skills are awesome. He mentioned Whitten out of knowhere and said he was a gun so the kid can obviously play.

?

I was going to ask the same question. I thought the article said that McGhies son wanted to go to Richmond. Did Robbie McGhie play enough games for us and if so are our recruiters assessing him and chasing him if good enough?

Also, I thought that there were two Whitten boys that were showing promise. The other must be younger and not eligible for a year or two.

We have a poster on this board called the ghost of Alby Smedts.
Ill bet he could tell us a thing or two about him.
And I think he did go to the Saints as part of the Tweedale deal.

What about our defance in those days? Richard Murrie, John Reid, Jim McAllister, Smedts. Godallmighty what a load of rubbish.

Its a killer that McGhies kids will be at the tiges.

A slightly related question.

If the young Whitten is not a very good player ( By all reports he is very good, but lets just assume he is not for the moment) and is in the mix with others for the last place on the list such as a tall defender or tall forward, should we still draft him for the tradition. My view is yes. I think it would add to the culture and tradition of the club, emphasis the loyalty that should be the WB's and show that great service to the club by others is never forgotten.

I am not saying draft him if he has no ability. If we want to draft duds I am still avaialable. But if it comes down to a toss up between a couple of players for that last spot I think there is more to be gained by showing that we value tradition.

However I agree about drafting him for the tradition.

I agree, the thought of us looking past him and him playing for another club is scary. The good news is he sounds like a gun so it won't be in doubt.

Chops, on the dud dad's with brilliant sons, as the vast majority of players fathers never played at the highest level, i'd say most of the league is an example.

I'm pretty sure our resident expert on exact number of games played by past players (Jim440) posted previously that Robbie McGhie played one short (49).

Meant more that their father was an average player at AFL level but the son turned out to be a star.
This isn't a good example. Serg Silvagni was a good player but Stephen was even better.
Hopefully this is the case with Alby Smedts son if we pick him up.

I think your first father son counts as a second round pick.

Anyone see Graeme Whitnall play? James Hird's Dad? Cant remember Jonathan Brown's dad either

Hirs was not grafted under the father son rule, he was drafted in 1990 pick number 79. His father played 4 games foe Ess his grandfather played 102 games for Ess.
In 1990 we drafted before Hird

Gow(7 games),Moylan,McGinnes,Harvey,Campbell none of these plaed a game . I cant remember seeing any if them play other than Gow and McInnes . Its not all gllom that year we drafted big Danny Del re in the preseason draft.
