Alice: Madness Returns

Never got to play the original but it looks like it was a good game and friends who have played it enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to this. I hope story-wise you don't need to have played the first one to understand what's going on too much.

Looks freaky as **** and has a wicked cool art style (which you'd expect from an Alice in Wonderland horror title).

2011 is looking like being one massive year for gaming.

Also TBD I don't know about the first being underrated, maybe overlooked? But it was rated well critically.

Anyone having a crack at this one?

Probably not really my cup of tea; only picked it up with the intention of returning it next week for another game.

Seems to be a bit of a mixed bag; the combat actually works pretty well but the platforming is getting pretty tedious; I've only just started the 4th chapter but it really hasn't changed up since the 1st and it's nothing special. The levels seem to drag on for about half an hour after they've lost interest.

Visually even though it's probably not the most technically accomplished game I've seen it still looks pretty nice. There's a fair bit of clipping, Alice often floats a little over the surface on which she is supposed to be walking, and she doesn't have an animation for when you quickly change directions. No significant problems. The levels have a reasonable amount of imagination on show.

Also the game contains a download code for the original game in HD, which I'm sure is a coup for fans of decrepit 3d platformers. Sorry, just baiting for the hell if it there. Never even played it.

Might be worth a look when it's a little cheaper, probably not worth $100ish as it is at the moment though.

Really want to pick this one up soon, love platformers, love alice in wonderland, love weird art styles.

Original was epic, and I will be playing this new one in the next couple of days.

Reviews have been average, but these kind of games aren't for everyone. User reviews have been pretty decent.

What? Are you some sort of masochist?

I'm not buying this game for that very reason despite have interesting it looks :(

Haha, easily my favourite genre - despite the fact that very few from the last 15 years have been any good.

finished this bugger last night.

my opinion is still largely the same as what i posted a couple of nights ago to be honest. i reckon it's a quality game that's stretched too thin with the platforming sections; about half the game it's just going through the motions. There's nothing particularly bad about them, it's just a matter of doing the same few tricks over and over, hours after it's gotten old. Nothing memorable.

Levels are also broken up with the odd mini game or puzzle (a side scrolling platformer, shmup, etc) which all also get repeated a couple of times. a couple were initially charming, all wore out their welcome.

but the good bits are well worth it. spoiler!

The end of Chapter 4/beginning of chapter 5 was my favourite part. For the majority of C4 you are being hounded by one of the Red Queen's henchman. he is an unkillable Resident Evil Nemesis type who shows up every now and then. After a few close escapes, alice finds the Eat Me cake, eats a slice and gives her enemy a little smirk before turning into a giant and squashing it under her foot. she then carves up the remainder of the royal army and assaults the red queen's castle.

i love it when games aren't afraid to give you a bunch of power and license to just unleash for the hell of it. works great when you've been under the game's thumb for the last hour. it's release. great stuff and well executed.

chapter 5 begins with a freak out where alice imagines herself as a heavily damaged young woman, drooling, shaved head, wearing a straight jacket, in an asylum. she staggers around the corridors a bit until tweedledum and tweedledee find her, put her head in a vice and penetrate her skull with a hand drill. was a bit confronting and the sort of ****ed up gear i was hoping from with this game.

unfortunately the remainder of chapter 5 involves 3 hours of uneventful platforming, punctuated with a pissweak super monkey ball thingy. bizarre.

well worth checking out at some point, i reckon :):thumbsu:

Pre-ordered it early last week but seeing as Zavvi only got around to despatching it yesterday, it'll probably be another week and a half before I get it in my grubby paws.
