It's just football. I care more about my strength and lower body power then size and proportion now to be honest. I do not care for biceps exercises. I know so many guys who go to the gym and pump their biceps for football and leave out important things such as their core and back. And for what? They seem to think it'll make them stronger, but realistically it’s all for show. Thus why my opinion is bicep exercises are for body builders and pretty boys.

One thing that REALLY gets on my nerves are kids (and I did this too, I learned from my mistake) who do weight training purely for football and they just worry about their size. They eat and lift, getting bigger, worrying about this. They’re all forgetting about what actually gets you to the ball and contests and that’s cardio. They substitute this for weight gain and when the football season rolls around, they’re not fit enough. Sure, now they're big enough to not get pushed off the ball so easily but what use is this if you're not able to work yourself to the contests?
Whats the point on working on your back and which exercises make your back stronger?

Can you recommend a training program to get ready for football? Im rather light. More of a ruck rover, rover. So fitness is a must but I need to get bigger. By the way im 18 and still growing

I actually want to get some size about me before i worry about strength. I want to look like i have been working out because at the moment im pretty skinny.

After about 6 months on weight training, and i have got a bit of size about me i will worry about other things.

Dude, your back is arguably the most important part of your body concerning football. Without a strong back and good core strength, you’re not going to be able to break those tackles.

For your back its best to go to a gym and ask for professional advice. You don't want to be doing the wrong movements and posture. You could injure your back seriously and believe me, you don't want that. I would assume he would suggest dead lifts (do not try this without proper education on how to do them properly) and some rows.

I can't directly help you but considering you're a ruck rover, rather light and already 18, I'd assume you're the type who hasn't filled out yet. Genuinely ruck rovers have a good fitness base, where as I'm a key position player and I'm the opposite to you which doesn't help. And depending on when your side recommences pre season training, I’d say it’s a tad too late for putting on weight now. The season is less then four months away, the amount of cardio you’ll be doing during the pre season in the coming months won’t be good for your weight gain.

Yes, we all responded the wrong way. Still, with the bad comes the good. Check Sylvia Saint's list of exercises on the 2nd page. As someone stated, it may be getting too late before the season to really add strength, but some is better then none.

Even 2 whole body workouts a week can make a difference. During the season, if possible, retain the strength you do have in the basic exercises like the Squat, Power Clean/ Deadlift, Press(overhead/Incline). Keep the workout very brief. One session in the middle of the week if possible to retain the strength.

Season ends, hit it hardcore with the goal of increasing the numbers every week or when you can. Go for 3 sessions per week. Then as you add more cardio and as the sean approaches, perhaps go to two whole body workouts per week, until the season approaches.

Do that year in year out and before ya know it, you'll be full-forward for the might Blues. Kicking them to premiership after premiership.

hehehehe. Do ya even play footy? Anyway, advise for those that do.

Direct bicep work is a waste of time. What are huge guns good for? Sport? No. Strength? No. Impressing the opposite sex? Maybe. But if that's the sole reason you workout...

Unfortunately it took me a while to realise that big biceps were not going to help my rugby.

And not that it matters - but heavy back work will hit your biceps anyway.

Anyone who wants to get better at sport do these essential exercises:

Bench Press (Incline is better than Flat I've decided)
Power Clean
Military Press
Squat
Deadlift
Barbell Row
Plyometrics

Heavy weight, low reps.

Even if you're not interested in sports, Strength > Size. All day every day.
:)

All true, though given I don't do weights for sport, I work my biceps. My guns are huge but curls are the secondary exercise. I work back and biceps on the same day with 5 sets of widegrip pullups, deadlifts, rows, curls and then chinups (in that order).

My problem was that I started leg weights a good 12 months after upper body stuff as I was doing it at home. As such my upper body is now huge and my legs are still slim. Not noticable in jeans but if I wear shorts and a singlet I look a bit silly which is why i'm focusing primarily on my legs right now. Unfortunately, I injured myself doing squats.

you guys should see yourselves as artists! when an artist wants to add more to his model, he applies more clay, just as you guys should increase your weights to add muscle/tone to areas that aren't yet perfect.

bodybuilders are artists!

You must be huge by now Alky.

While we're all comparing ******** size, I just thought I'd let you know I once bench pressed an XF Falcon.

No, but by the looks of things body builders are idiots.
