According to AAP yesterday John Sargent trainer of Red Ruler will definitely miss the Cup but will start in the Mackinnon.

I don't think he's secured a place yet.

Efficient's withdrawal helped, but Zagreb was behind it in the order of entry so all that's helped there is that a potential challenger for a spot is out.

It's going to be close and it may well come down to whether Yellowstone is right to run or not.

EDIT: But if Red Ruler is also out like above post suggests, Bauer would stand a good chance of being there.

The Saab Quality is full of horses are nominated for the Cup and all can leapfrog Bauer and make the Melbourne Cup field as the winner of the Saab Quality is exempt from the Melbourne Cup ballot.


Horses such as Baughurst, Book of Kells, Chiefcomingfirst, Dandaad, Largo Lad, Magic Instinct, Moatize, Get Up Jude and Newport are all nominated for the Saab Quality and are still in the Melbourne Cup

MELBOURNE, Oct 30 AAP - New Zealand trainer John Sargent has had a change of heart about a Melbourne Cup start for Red Ruler and will make a decision after the four-year-old runs in Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes.
Red Ruler finished sixth in the Caulfield Cup won by All The Good and was found to have a slight cough after the race as well as a laceration to his off-foreleg.
Disheartened by the result, Sargent told Corey Brown to accept any other riding offer he got for the Melbourne Cup but the trainer has been buoyed by what he has seen since arriving in Melbourne yesterday.
``I watched him gallop this morning and he has really turned the corner,'' Sargent said.
``We'll see how he runs in the Mackinnon on Saturday and make a decision on a Cup start after that.
``I did tell Corey to take any other ride he could get but I've had several jockeys on the phone already so I don't think we'll have any trouble getting a rider.''
Among those jockeys was Kerrin McEvoy whose mount All The Good was found to be lame after galloping yesterday.
