Hi Guys
Recently through injury and probably a bit of laziness ive lost a fair bit of fitness.
Im only a young player and am still getting used to playing footy with men, but as the year has gone on i think i'm getting more used to it.
My main problem at the moment though is my fitness, id like to play midfield but i have to increase my engine very significantly and my speed is pretty slow so i need to increase that too.

Any suggestions to what i can do outside of football training to improve my fitness overall, and help drop the skinfolds and a few kg???

I'm trying to set myself for 2011, so im aiming at gradually improving my fitness from now until then, and then work on things like speed and strength from october onwards.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Hey Archy

I finished last footy season at 105kg and wanted to get myself down to 90 as at 27 I was starting to slwo up, feel sorer and at 195cm was carrying a few extra kilos.

From October to Xmas I gave up booze (except for 3 binges in that time) ate really well but made sure that I was exercising in some shape or form 7 days a week.

The key to it was cross training- bike, running and weights and the weight fell off. I cut about 3 minutes of my 3km time trial. 15:30 to 12:30 and now weigh in at 88kg. Now I'm looking at weights to get heavier again.

Some of the running exercises I did were running up hills. Find an uphill track about 100-150m in length and do 4-8 reps with a minute or two break at each end depending on fitness and 90 second runs. This involves going to your local oval running laps flat out for 90 seconds, break for two minutes then go again. Again I would do at least 6 of these. The idea is to run consistent distances each 90 seconds. Running when tired is a good way to build up the 'wind tank'
