TO ALL OF MY FANS:
I would like to announce my plans to retire from the National Basketball Association. I always thought that when I left the game, it would be because I couldn’t help my team the way that I was accustomed to. However, that is not the case.
I still have tremendous love for the game, the desire to play, and a whole lot left in my tank. I feel strongly that I can still compete at the highest level.
Stepping away from the game will allow me to spend quality time with my wife and kids. This is a reward that far exceeds anything that I’ve ever achieved on the basketball court. I have prayed for this day and I see it as my greatest gift.
I want to thank the people of Reebok International Ltd., for always allowing me to be me and for supporting me my whole career through all the ups and downs. I have enjoyed 13 wonderful seasons in the NBA, and I am grateful.
I want to first acknowledge my fans everywhere, who have been with me throughout my entire career. Without you, there would be no me. You should all know that I appreciate your support from the bottom of my heart. Thank you!
To Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Charles Barkley and Larry Bird, you guys gave me the vision to play the game that will be forever in my heart.
To my Mom, who encouraged and inspired me to play every day, and to all of my family and friends who stood by me from the beginning. Thank you!
To my high school coach, Michael Bailey, Coach John Thompson at Georgetown University, Coach Larry Brown and to all of my other coaches, teammates, administrators, owners and staff who’ve been a part of my career, Thank you as well!
I’d like to give a special thanks to the people of Memphis. I never played a home game for your beloved Grizzlies, but I want you to know how much I appreciate the opportunity given me by a great owner in Michael Heisley, and the support of the city. I wish the Memphis Grizzlies’ organization all of the success that the game has to offer.
And finally, to the city of Philadelphia: I have wonderful memories of my days in a Sixers’ uniform. To Philly fans, thank you. Your voice will always be music to my ears.
God Bless all of you,
ALLEN IVERSON

If it wasn't for Iverson's team sucking so bad when he joined it he'd have been out of the league years ago.

Good speed and quickness of hand (steals) and feet but apart from that no discernible ability other than jacking up a thousand shots per 48 minutes. Never made his team-mates better. Even that Finals side was predicated on him being the only offense while his teammates were all A-grade defensive specialists.

Good riddance to bad rubbish

Not quite following here.

Even that Finals side was predicated on him being the only offense while his teammates were all A-grade defensive specialists.

Your point there though? That's how the team was put together, and it worked for 56 regular season wins and 12 playoff wins.

Assuming he stays retired (which I somehow doubt btw) will Philly retire his number ???

Personally I think so for sure.

Most definitely.

It's already partially retired. No one has worn it since he left, and I don't think anyone would.

Is there a reason for that video?

If you want to actually appreciate one of the greatest scoters the A has seen, watch his rookie highlights video from NBA.com. Some amazing footage from such a raw talent. I wish he dunked through his career as much as he did rookie year.

It's a shame he couldn't bring himself to sacrifice his individual game to have a crack at a championship.
I can seriously believe that we give him to the All stat break and he will accept a 15-20 minute bench role for a good team. I think his desire for a ring will overpower his want to start.

Don't quote me on that though :o

At least he didn't do the whole Latrell Sprewell 'hold out for a few years and wait for a contender to come knocking' routine...

Will he be remembered more as a great player or a giant douche bag?

Most ignorant people will remember him as a douche, and most likely fans will look at him as a douche (look at Ytoojae). People don't remember him as the guy that was 3rd all time scoring average over his career (6th now after half a season of poor form/injury). As well as being on the brink of top 25 all time assists.

I can admit he was immature towards the end of his career (hoping he can accept a 6th man role) but still can see him contributing 20/5 from 20 minutes off the bench.

people will remember him as a little man with the heart of a lion. a scoring guard (shoot first, pass second) who accumulated enough assists for his traits. if he never plays again i think his unwillingness to sacrifice his game for the betterment of the team will put a tarnish on his career

Another phone call from Stern, another career shut down too soon to go with Rider, Spreewell, Kemp, Scott, Abdul Rauf and many, many others

look like A.I might come out of retirement to go back and play for the sixers.
I said somewhere earlier that bringing back A.I would boost the Sixers in terms of attendance. People would flock and Wachovia would be near sell out most nights, the 76ers would be brought back into the limelight.

Right now in a team perspective, AI makes some sense to make us competitive. Jrue will be awesome just not yet. Lou's out for 8 weeks. Iggy's struggling the whole team stinks right now. AI is a playmaker and he can make things happen.

Frankly a couple of weeks ago if you'd ask me I'd say no but now **** yes.

Don't get ahead of yourself there. Would probably not see those kinda numbers until the Eagles season is done, which shouldn't be untill January (hopefully February though :thumbsu:)

Well at least generate an actual interst...

And I'm looking at the phlly newspaper online and it's the first thing you see. They give a shit about AI.
