My "n00b just signed up" sanctions have finally been lifted... so I thought I'd try to get a feel for the place by starting a thread.

Why not right? :thumbsu:

So my question is...

Who is Allen Iverson? And will this potential move to Memphis do anything to revive this superstar's career?

At this point there's almost no room for AI in the League... which is incredibly sad.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

He definitely has an ego problem of some sorts (dont i point out the obvious), still has the talent I think but teams don't want to see him running the show. I really don't know what Memphis are doing, I thought they were building a young core around Rudy Gay, Mayo etc, then they let Warrick go, sign ball hog Z-Boobs and plan to bring in Iverson?? Personally I just think it's a "bums on seats" move because it doesn't make any basketball sense to me. They only really have 3 guards on the roster tho I suppose.

Definitely a marketing exercise. Kyle Lowry was moved on last year when the coach decided Mike Conley was their PG of the future. Bringing in Iverson makes absolutely no sense unless its to sell tickets. Z-Bo I can sort of understand, as they need a low post scorer, and they couldnt get anyone else.

allen iverson is a player currently without a team. he went to georgetown where he wore a t-shirt under his jersey.

picked by the philly seventy sixers basketball club, he and jerry "sookie" stackhouse were supposed to be the new flight brothers. they were not.

he is a small shooting guard who is averse to passing. big heart, big shooting numbers.

not sure if he likes walks on the beach.

a move to memphis will help one person only, himself.

I'm not sure it will... I mean, if he wants to earn anything more than $3m per year from now until the end of his career, he's going to have to have a sensational season in Memphis. I suppose turning Z-Bo into a half decent player/human being would raise his stock a little...

Ewww, the Grizzlies? Good luck to him and his sponsorship deals.

Reebok presents... the new "Blue Suede Answer" shoe... *prrrrt*

I agree... But at this age? If I'm Memphis, I'm really hoping AI is a showcase due mainly to an ability to take the Grizz stars Mayo and Gay to another level.. Not by sending them backwards in their development by taking 30 shots a game and hanging out all night at clubs etc...

Is there anyone who thinks the Grizzlies will win more than 35 games this year?

I hope all you guys who are writing off AI are puting red lines through Sheed - who was worse tha Iverson last year - and Ron-Ron - who is older, slower and maybe a little be more insane than last season - as well.

As far as the Memphis situation goes I think it's win-win. They can't possibly be any worse than last season, they'll sell more tickets and AI gets to prove all his critcis wrong.

Personally I wouldn't bet against him. It was only two seasons ago that he averaged 27 points, then he got traded to play for a terrible coach on a team that considered him nothing more than an expiring contract - replacing a much loved player in the process. It was never going to work out in Detroit, yet when it didn't everyone blamed AI.

how were sheed and artest worse than AI? these guys dont care about numbers, they contribute in ways not reflected on the boxscore. ppg doesnt always mean everything. yes he had a great ppg avg but was he playing with other players who needed the ball like the grizz have now?

With a shrinking cap, he isn't going to get another big deal. He is going to be a gun for hire, or one of those vets that signs up with a contender in January for a push to the playoffs.

His numbers will be great, but as everyone has already indicated, he is a ball hog on a team of ball hogs. It will be a 82 game car accident. Watch OJ Mayo pout right through the season. And poor Mike Conley.......

In that division 35 is their ceiling. But they will be better than the '08 version and will win just enough to be out of the juicy end of the lottery but not within sight of the playoffs.

Oh please! He has had a whole career to prove people wrong and he has failed.

He knows how to play basketball but his problem is that he doesn't know how to play team basketball and how to make his team mates better. No one has liked playing with him. Everyone he has played with had nothing positive to say about him.

He is an incedibly gifted player, but also incredibly selfish one at that. To AI its all about AI and to hell with everyone else. He will have his scoring titles and he will have is All-Star games and he was an incredible one on one player but he has failed to turn that talent into more than just scoring titles and All-star games.

I have said it before and I will say it again, he is the only real "superstar" that you couldn't possibly build a successful team around.

I agree with Artest though. He is slowing down and my god he is a nut case. The only thing good about him is that he has gone to the Lakers and I am sure he will make them implode.

As for Sheed, all he really is at this stage is a qulity veteran reserve!

It's going to be an interesting season in Memphis. :p

More of the same from AI, games where you shake your head saying "you really shouldn't be able to be that good"

Then games where you shake your head saying "Jesus this guy just doesn't get HOW to play basketball sometimes"

Then games where you throw the remote at the tv and say "pass the ball you ****ing hungry midget"

All the drive and talent, and still yet to harness it in a 'team' way.

This guy was so good he took the 6ers tot he NBA finals by himself, lets be honest. But when he has a good team around him, he can't mesh.

What a waste of talent.

He probably wsted his talent early in his career when he needed to be the scorer of the team, because all he had were defensive scrubs.

Obviously when he got a really solid defensive team behind him, the team became very successful, but by that stage and onwards, the only thing he knew what to do to help the team was to score.

If you play like 8 years being the #1 scorer on the side, with noone there to really help you, it would be pretty hard to totally revamp your game to incorporate other scorers.

So, in short, he pretty much was a waste of talent. Still love him though :thumbsu:

I agree, the best team for Iverson to be on is one totally void of any other options.

Just fill em up with defensive players and give him the ball on offense.

Pretty much.

Trying to put Iverson in a 'team', would be like sticking Nash in a slow, half court offence. Just wouldn't work together.
