Need help settling an argument I am having with a mate. Which country, over the last 50 years, has produced the better bands. Taking into account only main stream music and excluding one hit wonders, female bands and solo acts.

I'm sure I have left out heaps of bands.

For me, England has produced the better bands over the last 40-50 years. Take out The Beatles and Led Zep and they are probably equal.

Some of the contenders:

English:
Led Zep
Beatles
Radiohead
Rolling Stones
The Animals
Cold Play
Oasis
Sex Pistols
The Clash
Free/Bad Company
Pink Floyd
Queen
Bee Gees
The Who

American:

The Doors
Nirvana
Guns 'N' Roses
The Beach Boys
The Eagles
The Jacksons
Metallica
Fleetwood Mac
Blondie
Chilli Peppers
Green Day
Areosmith
ZZ Top
Creedance
REM

Think the best option I can see would be for everyone to go through their own collection and count it that way.

However it did go in cycles in the early years.

Up until the early 60s, it was the US, from the mid 60's and 70s the yanks then from then on it because a great battle.

PS, who's bigger than the Stones?

Given how subjective music preferences are, I doubt you'll ever settle your argument, however this site averages out a shitload of best of lists from various music critics to rank songs, artists and albums. Their best ever artist list seems to favour English bands. I think you could say that, as a vague rule, England produces more popular/critically acclaimed bands, and America produces more popular/critically acclaimed solo artists.

For what it's worth, I prefer English groups too, especially if you're only including main stream stuff. I'm a fan of most of your UK list, but dislike all but 5 or 6 on your US list.

Cheers. I'm a big Nirvana fan but amazed to see them in the top 20.

The ones I highlighted are my favourite bands, and music I listen to regularly. They would be on my Ipod most played list, if I had an Ipod.

So I am guessing I prefer US music....

I do like most of the other bands on that list, even The Jacksons. Are they a band or a group;)??

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

You'll never get a bigger fan of the Beatles or Zep than myself but as the Stones are still going you'd have to be on the woopy weed not to acknowledge that they are the biggest.

But you did say the best and although the Beatles weren't the best musicians but their music is everlasting and the record production in their day was second to none so in that regard I agree with you there.

The Stones when it comes to longevity but when it comes to quality probably The Beatles -----daylight------Led Zep and then the Stones.

You wouldn't have said that if you saw them at their early concerts which I did.
Having said that one of the best concerts I saw was Paul McCartney when technology was much better for bands.

Sheer brilliance.

english imo

just like to add ive met keith richards, had a pint with him a couple of times.
he has a house in west wittering, where i live.
comes in the pub when over visiting his daughter who also drinks in the pub i work/ live in over here and is now a mate of mine.
been to his cottage at redlands, memorabilia on the walls is amazing.
thats my claim to fame anyway!

also one of his minders is from adelaide and a crows fan, small world hey!
english country side and 2 crows fans in the same pub :D:D

Easily..only thing the stones have over the beatles is longevity. The beatles have no peers.

To the question even though I love a lot of US music when it comes to bands it's clearly the brits.

Could also have added to the english list
XTC
The Jam
The Kinks
The Smiths
Joy Division/New Order
Blur
Roxy Music

60's-70's UK hands down
80's...nil all draw with the exception of Gunnas/Queen
90's US grunge movement killed it

00's .......kill me now

BTW Zeppelin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Deep Purple/Stones/Beatles

All 4 musicians in Zeppelin were freaks at what they did, arguabley they were all THE best at their instrument. Stones, while great musicians were a step below in their musicianship, especially the guy holding the sticks.

They were more mainstream popular though and still a great band that craps all over anything we have now.

England by far.
:thumbsu:

And all the proof you need...

As a whole English music has far more substance than american music especially mainstream pop music.

Since the 80s the english hold over the pop music scene has lessened now it's mainly american music now in the charts and it is generic, boring and everything is that quasi pop-rap rubbish.

WHAT???? Charlie Watts is a former jazz drummer, and is a brilliant drummer, just not flashy.

I'm a blues fanatic, and would like to mention Cream, Hendrix experience, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ben Harper etc. when thinking about great bands.OFcourse America has a sqillion great blues bands.

And the Yardbirds weren't too shabby either, with Clapton, Beck and Page all rotating through.

Opinion I guess, just doesn't take hold of me like Bonhams stuff does. Even in Scince i've been loving you, which isn't flashy, it's down right orgasmic to me......sorry too far.

Gotta agree with you on Cream and the Yardbirds too.
