We have nothing to lose by bringing in about 8 players over the next month for the remainder of the season. As long as we get games into the kids that belong in our team then it won't matter if we lose a few games. As long as we have them prepared for the start of 2009. In about 5 weeks I would love to be seeing this team out there

FB Casserley Thursfield Connors
HB Mcguane Rance Schultz
C Richardson Cotchin Tambling
HF Morton Reiwoldt White
FF Edwards Hughes Brown
FOLL Pattison Foley Deledio
INT Polo Newman King Simmonds
EMER Moore Jackson Graham Collins

Firstly I think we can make more use of Kings aggression in the middle. Being loose on your opponent in the middle will have more benefits and less deficits than doing this as a back pocket. Bring King and Newman off the bench as midfielders. Get Connors and Casserley used to roles in defence. Connors has to be pretty fit by now after 10 games. Just play both in defence. I'd only use one of Moore of Mcguane in the team at the same time. I think Schultz's height and skill is more valuable and i rate him still. Once Thursfield is back, then Rance can go to chb. Play Cotchin mainly in the midfield. We must have Hughes and Reiwoldt in the forward line from now on. It's exciting think we could have Morton, Reiwoldt, White and Edwards in the forward line, Imagine the amount of second efforts there will be to keep the ball in the forward line. I'd start Pattison in the ruck from now on. I'd also bring in Polo and make him into a quality midfielder off the bench. Here is the side I'd love to see every week for the next 11 weeks

Imagine their bigger, stronger opponents having a picnic in contested situations.

Sorry, but that side would get pumped every week. That is not what we want, a group of young players who get flogged week in week out by bigger opponents and who will have rock bottom condfidence as a result. We could wreck these players' careers and our club's future by doing that. Look at St. Kilda, enourmous talent, but the kids couldn't shake the losing culture because they were used to losing when they came in.

Among other things, that HB line is a bit too big.
For a team that Stevey Milne has destroyed, it really is too big.

And it wont happen.

I agree wit you MT, at least if we played with this side and give the kids a go we will see if they are up to playn AFL or not, there only has to be signs in the first 2 to 3 years of playing (and by 2 to 3 years i mean 60 to 100 games not they were drafted 3 years a go they should be good by now stuff). Otherwise you end up having players like Tiva and pettifer(2 ok seasons in 8 years) on your list when there 27-8, who have had 5 years to many of firstly development, time and money from the RFC and secondly take away oppotunities from younger players.

Also if you've followed the saints recruiting for the last few seasons you'll realise they have recruited older frige players, and they have suffered because of this. Remeber the hawks finshed 14th in 2004(we finished 16th) from 2005 onwards they have played the kids and backed them and developed them, and look where they are at, it looks like that "losing culture" has gone, also they have kept recruiting young exciting players who put presure on the senior players, players like Rioli and Ellis and a bloke like Thorp in the reserves who would be without a doubt in our senior team.

I think this team with the old tweak here and there would be the best way to go, i rather lose by 70pts playin collins and co then lose by 50pts playin Tiva and co

MT, you've picked my dream team for this time next year. But they'll need too feed them between now and the end of this season. Not in one or two lumps (or lumps is what we'll be getting).

I wonder how many of the people saying 'kids kids kids' are the same ones saying Patto is no good because he isn't dominating the Ruck as a 21 year old...

Will you show the patience required, or will you be screaming for these kids to be delisted at the end of the year?

We need older players for the big bodies, the ability to run out the games and their cool heads/decision making ( Bowden may well have won us the Bulldogs game for example ).

there's only 3 more kids than the team which lost to geelong and 4 more kids in team which lost to the hawks and saints. This is close to our best team

Except Rance, Hughes, Connors, Polo and Casserly aren't yet in our best 22, not even close for most of them, and Johnson, Bowden, Polak, Tuck and Moore probably are.

I can gaurauntee Hughes will benefit the team up forward more than Polak(who can only mark but can't kick). Polo is more value in the middle than Tuck(who can only tag these days). I gaurantee if Hughes and Polo are left in the team for a whole month we will all see this. Rance would only come in because Thursty is injured but he may keep his spot in the side when Thursty comes back. You wouldn't think Casserley or Connors could do any worse than have Milne kick 7 goals on them. We must bring in a minimum of 3 players this week and within 5 weeks I hope all 7 players mentioned have been given at least 2 games

Agree with bringing in the youth much like the Hawks did. Maybe let Johnson play out the season for reasons of leadership and form..but getting games under their belts will pay off come 2010-2011 and beyond.

Hughes certainly needs to come in. Has shown fantastic signs when he has come into the side, but just hasn't been given opportunities.

Agree that he is more use to us than Polak up forward at the moment. Polak needs to find a role and play it. That's mainly Terry's fault though.

Great thread.

Pretty clear now that this is indeed an exciting Tigers side, and will be a long term finals participant.

TW has done a brilliant job sticking to the plan that was always going to deliver even during the tough times.
The success we are now experiencing and will be seeing in the future is a credit to TW, the coaching staff, and the whole Richmond Football Club

Gee, I'd get rid of that Richardso bloke - he's over 30!

Seriously, this is romantic nonsense. This team would be destroyed every week. The kids look good when they play as kids - which is as flankers, outside mids and pockets. They do not have the body or the nous to make the play on their own.

Murphy at Carlton is the classic example - had a good first year, so next year he was tagged - pretty disappointing. This year, Judd and Stevens are there, so Murphy gets a fairly free run - and he is still only the 3rd best mid at Carlton, even though he seems to be racking up more touches than the others.

Put Cotchin as one of our key mids, and Riewoldt and Hughes as the only Key forwards and they will be dead in a few weeks. - and we won't have won any games.

This is why, unfortunately, we sometimes drop the kids for the older players, despite the fact that the kids are the more exciting future. You have to keep a certain balance of big, smart bodies across the field. Yes, that means Hyde, Tiv, etc get games.

I like the look of that side for early 2010.

Madtiger this is madness. Tuck had high 20's on the weekend including 11 clearances! Last year he was top 6 in the comp for clearances. This is a big stat. Sides that can win it out of the middle have a big advantage. We are still in with a chance of making the finals. Slim as it is.

Having said this i would love to see Rance, Connors, Casserly etc at some stage.

Forgot to add that 10 of his possessions were CONTESTED! Doesn't come anymore impressive than that.

My question: What has Casserley done to warrant a game for the next 11 games??
Granted he may get a game somewhere along the way, but he's hardly knocking down the door of senior selection like say Edwards would be after his great game against Tassie and Hughes after two big weeks up forward, or rance and Polo after some impressive performances on the trot!!!

I'm a Tuck fan, but he wasn't doing alot before the Melbourne game. Hopefully has has a better 2nd half of the season. But soon we have to give Polo some games

It's not entirely Terry's fault, DTT. Polak has been played everywhere bar drink boy this season, and as yet hasn't really delivered the way we'd all hoped.

I'm almost starting to think he's the Lynch style, big bodied, stay at home goal square forward. Hughes to lead up from the square, Jack to play further out towards CHF and HFF.

Spot on the money Turtle. Polak is at his best deep in attack...you don't want him kicking from beyond 20 or 25 out if you life depended on it and Jack is definitely going to be more of a roaming flanker than key position!
A spot on the coaching panel beckons for you!

Thanks Goldy. I've been thinking it for a while now. He's a super mark, got a good size body, and gives us another option along with Hughes, Jack, and Richo, when he pushes forward, that the opposition back line have to worry about.

HFF Jack Schulz Morton
FF Hughes Polak Browny

Something like this would be OK. You could have Tambling Lids floating through. Schulz could also play his part down back. Patto and Simmo could play behind the ball a bit more. I could keep going.
