What does he need to do? It's obvious that he's bigger than last year, which we all said needed to happen, and he has been a fairly solid senior contributor. What has interested me though is that he has been made to be more accountable by playing primarily in the backline, rather than as an attacking wingman which I thought he would. He is a good player, but IMO he needs to do more. For such a high draft pick, he should be doing A LOT more. I can't see us offloading him, as he has some pretty silky skills and good speed, but he needs to stand up if Geelong are to be a chance.

I'm a big fan of Mackie, and I like him playing in defence, but he shouldn't take the big guys like Drew Petrie. He did a great job on Lance Franklin, and he is currently our best rebounding defender. while he does a few dumb things from time to time, i'll forgive him, because he is actually delievery the ball well to all other players.

We need him, he's been in our top 10 players this year so far.

Totally agree. Yet another mind numbing matchup.

Kangas didn't give us much choice with where our backs were placed in the backline by all playing near the goal square. Enright and Milburn both tried to zone off on a number of occasions and it led to our backs being outnumbered, hence the high tackle count for Kangas forwards.

Mackie may move up the ground when Harley returns...

Smart idea.
He's okay on forward. But as a back, he's got it going on.

Besides, he can't be worse than a certain C. Enright :thumbsd:.

Mackie, no doubt, is being groomed as a future CHB. Hasn't got the body size just yet but has been one of our better rebounding defenders. Has a great kick on him and has shown good accountability (helped me with my BAS statements last quarter :D ) since heading down back. One thing he needs to do is back himself a bit more in marking contests which will come in time. Was coming good on a wing towards the end of last year so he may head back there when Harley comes back in. Could also develop into a tall goalkicking midfielder with a few massive preseasons. If he does that he will be tough to match up on.

Never really tagged him as a future CHB, but given his relatively solid efforts so far this year maybe he could. I think he's got to stay around the wing/midfield for now though while he's so skinny.

Next year, when hopefully Hawkins, NAblett and/or Grima are more or less fixtures in the side, I would like to see Moons playing a Chad Cornes type role for us across half back. He has been great for us in the forward line the last year or so when we have had precious few other options, but I just think that he will never be more than a makeshift forward and when we have more riches he should be moved out, and the roaming half back with the odd run on the ball has always been his best spot.

With his height, mobility, decent speed and good skills I could see Mackie in the same sort of role in a maybe three years. Moons is 28 this year, so by the time he's ready to hang up the boots, Mackie might be ready to come off his wing and take over that role. Perfect.

Egan for mine is more of a traditional full back, and I can see the day in about four years' time when Egan, Mackie and some other bloke we probably haven't drafted yet become the tall timber in a gun backline.

What Mackie really, really needs to do in the meantime though is bulk up a lot more. He's still far too skinny in the upper body to play key position. But I still have hope that will come with a little more physical maturity and a couple more very targeted pre-season programs.

I really think people should stop expecting Mackie to bulk up significantly. He has now been at the club for 5 odd years and this is about as heavy as he's going to get (+ maybe a few more kgs).

He's just naturally light framed. One of the reasons he has started to come of age is that the club has stopped grooming him for a key position and has instead given him different roles in the midfield, on the wing and in defence. He's shown already that this is what suits him.

That is correct. It is rare but with genetics like his it would make life extremely hard as far as bulking up. I reckon he has the narrowest shoulders on a 6'3ish bloke I've ever seen... A frame like his would require a 6 meal per day, very high protein, very heavy weight / no cardio regime to put on decent size. With the running that is required as part of football training, he is no chance.

Mackie is starting to remind me of Colbert without the extra big dose of courage. ( I said Colberts name behind my hand!).

Could develop into a KPP

A few years ago I made the call that Mackie reminded me of a young Colbert (skinny but skillfull, tallish kid), and with it, the similar potential to bulk up to KPP size (much like Colby did in the later years).

Of course now, as catempire has rightfully pointed out, I think any such 'hope' or expectation that he'll hit a development trajectory similar to that of Colbert now is misplaced.

So, given all that, there is no chance I would (or will ever) peg him as a genuine CHB hope for us.

Destined to take up Milburn's role as third tall in backline who can be thrown into the midfield or up forward.
