With the lack of options available in defence this year I was wondering what everyone's opinion of Andrew Mackie was. Scores this year of 60, 73, 76, 137 and 97 which gives him an average of 88.6 which puts him as the 4th best averaging defender (behind Cornes, Shaw and King). In 2007 averaged 83.3, but at $366k is he to expensive?

I've never really taken much notice of Mackie and it would help if somebody could fill me in as to what sort of role he has played in the past, and whether it has changed this year. The reason I ask is that I'm looking at trading Martina Mattner and I already have Shaw, Cornes, Milburn, Goddard, Birchall and S.Fisher (Edwards SDT reserves).

So would Mackie be good as a 4th/5th/6th defender or should I look at King or someone else. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Have another option of trading Rioli (starting) for Burton/Gia/SJ/BJ

as for mackie, there are probably better or equal options 20-30k cheaper. Burgoyne/stiffy looking good options
 
If that's your backline, what does the rest of your team look like?
I think you need to get your backline set for the year, the main risk is you pick up someone who gets injured.
Like I said I would like to see the rest of your team, if there are no other areas that need to be worked on just yet, upgrade Mattner but unless you have plenty of cash look for someone a bit cheaper then Mackie.

Team currently looks like this:
D: Shaw, Birchall, S.Fisher, Milburn, Mattner, Goddard, Cornes (SDT and Edwards)
M: Cross, Murphy, Kornes, Houli, Masten, Palmer (Jack and Armitage)
R: Simmonds, Cox (West and Cartledge)
F: Didak, Pavlich, Chapman, Porplyzia, Deledio, Rioli, JBrown (Stokes and Valenti)

I can afford any defender and I think Mackie could be a good unique choice. I will probably try to avoid P.Burgoyne as he does tend to get tagged and has been a bit injury prone. Now that I think about it Rioli to Burton will probably get me more points in the long run but I really want to do Rioli to Franklin/Richo/Riewoldt (which I can't afford unless I downgrade).
 
Had Mackie from the start and didn't trade him because i thought he might be a unique pick up. He's been scoring well recently and I hope it continues. He plays as a link-up player, so he can get massive numbers.
 
If you have trades left, you could get your team looking very good. If you dont have heaps, you might want to look at upgrading your mids but Mattner is crap so he needs to go.
 
Mackie was injured, then took a couple of weeks to get back to top form, hence the low scores.

His last two we have seen him rack up the kicks like he's meant to, so yeah he's back in form.

Seems to get points all around the ground. I've had him from the start too, but I'd say there are better options at his price. King is certainly a better pick if you don't have him.
 
With Junior Burgs out for 4 maybe Petey Burgoyne might get a bit of time in the guts, but as I said I'm a little bit unsure about his ability to score consistently well. After a bit of thought I'm leaning towards doing Rioli to Burton as it would hopefully bring in more points.

Edit: Just checked and found I can't do a straight Rioli ---> Burton trade so now I'm thinking Jack (who I rekon has just about peaked) to Wellingham/Cotchin then Rioli to Franklin/Murphy/Richo.

Will hold onto Martina for a few weeks.
