Toast Andrew Mackie

Was very good today. Courageous, used it well. Get some tomato sauce you fellas, cos it will make it easier to eat your previous words...

Never doubted his ability but after last year I began to question his attitude and intensity and rightly so. However, played a great game today. What stood out for me was the increase in contested work. Like a lot of his peers, he seems to have found a new lease and just might be finally making the adjustment he needed to in order to stay vital/relevant to the side.

I'd be interested to hear what Patrick Bateman has to say about this toast thread

Mackie deserved the criticism he got, particularly after the Fremantle game when he was frankly ...well...just awful. For some reason that day, he couldn't hit the side of a barn with his delivery by foot. I don't see why people should eat humble pie for pointing that out. Perhaps those who wrote him off permanently...but there weren't too many of those.

Kudos though for his focus on working on his game and starting to produce the footy most of us believe warrants a permanent place in the side. He isn't slow...he has a good pair of hands...can kick it a mile and likes a goal. I believe he has improved the defensive side of his game which is the area that many focussed on in the past.

Long may he thrive in the AFL. Mackie can play!

Yeah he played well.
Did do the usual thing though and kick a shocker up the middle that was turned over and north goaled.
But then made up for it 2 minutes later by creating a goal.

Kudos to the 10/1 commentary team when they stated that Chris Scott - with his track record as a blanketing man-on-man defender - was the perfect coach for Andrew Mackie. The game against Norfs was excellent, and Mackie was able to both fulfill his primary defensive obligations as a stopper and act as a conduit for some pretty devastating counter attacks.

I'm hoping that this is a sign of things to come (and you really gotta lurve any ex Glenelg player!!!).

The Freo game keeps getting a mention, I still think it was ONLY the consecutive clangers that were a problem that day. You could see he was trying. His efforts, skill, leadership, creativity and versatility are essential in our team.

Were you actually watching the game or a replay from the 07 final.
Mackie was dreadful again, he fumbled continuously, he kicked the ball long and in hope from the backline and was as soft butter when the contested ball was there to be won.
If he plays in the backline against a powerful pies forward press then we could be in trouble.
He needs to grow some nuts and toughen up.

What, so he did Ok against a very ordinary side and we should be impressed? If you think we've just got a grudge against him and we're refusing to acknowledge any of his good work your sadly mistaken. Watch his games properly and view his mistakes. He's a liabilty in the backline

I like Mackie, good to see him lift his game, we need him to play better than he has been playing

hopefully this sill bring some of his confidence back

Yeah totally agree.. hopefully we will see more of the Mack Truck in this position as he has the capacity to be a very useful attacking link player. He has a nice overhead and is a really attacking kick, although prone to a few errors (which would be masked on the wing somewhat).

Still, is a first 22 player.

Your exactly right and i'm f#%^&n bemused at the amount of Geelong supporters who don't actually view the game properly and just look at end of game stats or snippets of highlights to cast their best players.
Mackie is a liabilty and should not be playing in the backline.
Soft as a marshmellow, no heart and vision is terrible.
He should be played up the ground or not at all.

I guess you think Varcoe played well yesterday?
Mackie had a better game than TV.

Maybe you just understand orgasms more than the effort that goes into making them occur.

Geez, I dunno

Very average opponent in North and he still made some bad skill errors at times

The jury is still out

Let's reconvene this discussion on Friday around 11pm

This coming from somebody that said Geelong wouldn't win a game in the first 5 rounds:confused:

For an apparent well respected poster you seem at times, to be in a black hole rather than watching the game.

Gin possibly.

Wow...you and meto should get together for a good old fashion hate session on Varcoe and Mackie..what a whoop-te-do party that would be.

Mackie was ok on the weekend...he's clearly worked on his game and is making a good contribution.

Certainly doesn't deserve the spitting vitriol pouring from your posts....nor do the other posters in this forum

I dont know any Geelong supporters personally who are comfortable when the ball is in Mackies hands. To me, he makes too many mistakes in the backline, as well as the fact he has the defensive capabilities of Priddis. So yeah, I dont think he is good for the team. To me, there is much better talent we could be working with then Mackie. That, or throw him up the wing or in the forward line.

Firstly i'm a big fan of Varcoe and have NEVER critisized him, nor do i disrepect other posters opinions(generally, unless they disrepect mine) i'm merely stating Mackie's game was average on the weekend and he is poor under pressure.

Maybe i seen the game differently on T.V rather than the big picture, i don't know, but i think the best position for Mackie is up the ground.

I know your opinion on Varcoe...I was just alluding to what appeared to me to be a similar attitude against a player....but.......

to be honest I agree with you on Mackie's best position. I would like to see him playing wing/hf areas of the ground....he isn't slow, he kicks it a mile and accurately when shooting for goal...

Scott seems to be developing a side that has great variety, so that when things go sour, he can move players around to optimise performance. ( ala Lonergan on the weekend )...so we might see that if Mackie falls back into old ways, he finds himself upfield kicking goals.

I agree and i rarely bag players(apart from Blake) but i just wasn't impressed with Mackie's performance. It will be a big test for him this week and i hope he proves me wrong and cements a spot in the back half, because i'd love to see Duncan and Menzel remain roaming the forward 50.
That is one thing that has impressed me with Scott in that players aren't becoming stagnant and adjusting to other positions.
I thought Lonergan was great again on the weekend

Must be mistaken.
Rum not Gin.

Not a rum drinker myself but it is a fun drink.
Mackie has the ability to be a liability. I can see that.
But not yesterday.

If you want to look at pressure there was a problem with our ball getters handballing backwards under pressure. We did it in 06,10, and we are still doing it (although less)

That is where our problem is.

By the way. I pointed out earlier in this thread how mackie kicked one up the middle that was turned over for a goal.

Guess how that happened. He copped a handball backwards under pressure.

. To me, there is much better talent we could be working with then Mackie.

And who may I ask, is this much better talent that we have who can fill this defensive position that Mackie has filled for the last 3 or 4 years?

Where is this "much better" defensive talent?
