Little was expected of Andrew Mackie last year on the senior front.

Recruited as a promising 192-centimetre utility from South Australia, Mackie weighed a mere 73 kilograms when he arrived.

Endless hours in the gym and a solid VFL season means Mackie is one of a number of young Cats likely to make a contribution this year to a much-improved side.

"I'm aiming to get to about 85kg by the start of the season, in the last 12-13 months I've put on about nine kgs and this pre-season we've increased all the weights so I can feel the difference," Mackie said.

"You look at people like Ben Graham, Matthew Scarlett and Steven King and think they had to start off somewhere too, and even now Matty McCarthy and these blokes, so you have to keep doing the hard work and it'll come. You have to be patient."

Despite being a long-term project, last season Mackie still carried the expectations associated with being a club's No.1 choice in the national draft.

Although he's not expected to make a sizeable impact this year, Mackie doesn't hide the fact that he wants to play senior football and the opening Wizard Cup game against Port Adelaide is in his sights.

"(Seniors) is the number one goal, not playing last year makes you think about it a bit so it's the main goal and that's what you're here for," he said.

"I haven't (set any game targets) as yet, I'll sit down soon with Ken (Hinkley) and Cressa (Daryn Cresswell), but (the Wizard Cup) is a goal.

"I've put more pressure on myself this year, last year I knew that playing seniors would have been a bonus because I was skinny …you do think about it."

Mackie's light frame means if he is to play seniors he will probably be used as a midfielder or half-forward flanker, his pace and endurance meaning he's not restricted to a key-position role.

His development in the VFL side certainly pleased Cats officials, who will this year be expecting him to play a pivotal role when he lines up for them.

"I was happy without setting the world on fire, I was a bit inconsistent during games, I would have good patches and then fade away for a bit, so I've just got to get consistent and play four quarters," Mackie said.

"I remember the first game against Port Melbourne, you run around trying to see what people do, and still try and get the footy and by round 22 you encourage and talk instructively and feel comfortable."

What are everyone's expectations of Andrew Mackie this season?? Will he play senior football or spend another year in the VFL??

The puff-up pieces are nice, and stimulate some excitement in the camp, but realistically I can't see Mackie playing more than 5 - 7 games. If that.

Mackie worries me, perhaps because i'm impatient.

The talent is amazing, he does some freakish things, but he is far too skinny and far too reserved to be an AFL footballer at this stage.

He needs to get some mongrel in him (not literally). Perhaps a few nights on the town with Scarlett and his mates might be in order.

The few times I saw his last season I was suitably impressed and if he has added 9kg in one season, then I don't see him being too skinny. I think 5 to 7 games is a realistic chance.

He needs to add more then just weight, needs to develop some muscle as well.

He always was going to be a long term option, so i'm not too fussed if he doesn't make a major impact in 2004.

When we drafted Mackie, we always saw him as along term project, and knew it would be a few seasons in until he was able to step into a senior key position role. 2 pre-seasons in and with him adding and extra 9kg, I still agree that he's far too skinny to play as a marking forward for the seniors, yet I don't think it could be said that Mackie hasn't got the body for a wingman. I think he's capable of playing senior footy this year as a outside midfielder and thus I do think he's capable of playing more than the mentioned 4-5 games of senior footy this year. I see him playing 7-8 games as a real possibility. Look at Leigh Colbert. I really can compare Mackie with Colbert seeing as when Colbert first came to the Cattery, he was skinny like Mackie and played the majority of his early senior footy as a midfielder. Now that Colbert has the proper body type, he's playing CHB. So I believe Mackie can play alot more senior footy this year than previously mentioned as an outside midfielder.

Have to agree , Geecat
I haven’t seen enough of Mackie to make iron clad assessment. To me he seemed like one of these awkward type of body shapes that creates mismatch. A bit like a Caracella who is a handy mark or poor mans Jimmy Hird. Too Tall for a winger to match up on, Too agile for a bulky key back. Potentially an interesting player but this can work both ways, Is he quick enough for the wing? Will he be pushed aside in the forward line? Who knows but good players usually find a way to compensate and make mismatch's work for them. How good is he that’s the real question?
The top draft picks nearly always play in their first year. In 2002 the first 3 picks where just guns (Brendon Goddard, Daniel Wells, Jared Brennan)and rightly got games. These youngsters would demand to get picked because they had talent not because their bodies where the perfect shape.but other from that year have played already (Jay Schulz for eg.) Did GA need a full season in the VFL to step up. I bet Tenace will play 5 to 10 games this year if fit because he's the real deal. What it comes down to is talent. Talent is something you are born with not attained like skills, not developed in the gym.If the kid has talent he should be in the side this year for five to ten games, if he doesn’t have the talent necessary for that, then GFC stuffed up. He should be able to show his potential worth as a first round draft pick by the second year, maybe of and on the bench but he must show something this year. If he's good enough he will cope.
All Im saying is the body thing is really overblown He wouldn't be expected to play Key Position it would be wing/flank/floating mismatch 3rd tall. Let the kid show his stuff if he has the stuff to show. I wouldn’t mind having a Caracella type on the Cat forward line and remember Caracella is listed as 186cm and 85kg, NOW and he's played around 120 games. I wonder what he weighed when he played his first game?

Mackie is never going to be a key position player. He is going to be a tall midfielder who has the odd spell on a flank.

The comparison to Spider is interesting. Whilst their body shapes are similar, they are very different footballers.

Leigh's major attribute was his courage, something that Andrew hasn't got (not at the levels of Leigh, anyway).

Andrew's major attribute is his athleticism, something that Leigh never had.

Much like Joel Corey.

True, although Mackie is a legit athlete who will hurt teams going forward. Smithy is as slow as molasses, physically and mentally.
