Whether we needed another flanker when midfield types like Shaun Higgins Nathan Jones and Shannon Hurn were picked with the picks after Marcus Drum is another mystery to me. At least Drum played out country Victoria way where Connolly grew up (who gives a rats).

Flame me with the whole 'with hindsight' argument but I believed all I have said the day after the draft and nothing has changed my mind so far.

Lets hope Harveys influence means we get value for picks.

Still early days but Phil Smart may be onto something.
I havent seen Swallow mentioned much this year Smart obviously saw something in Ibbo that a lot of others didnt.

Swallow's name has been thrown around as a trade option on the north board. Dpending on what happens with Mundy and Murphy he might be worth a look. Swallow's out injured at the moment, not sure what the problem is though.

Drummy has shown some ability, but his role going forward is a worry. Needs to be given the rest of the season to settle in a position, I'd like to see him groomed at CHB while Dodd plays on the medium sized HFF types (Burton/Embley/Didak/etc). We need to identify who is going to replace McPharlin, Hayden and Grover asap.

Indeed.

But I would like to see him play 2 games without getting injured. Body is at the crossroads IMO.

Drum is doing fine - bigger bodies take a little more time.

Our defensive stocks are very fragile moving forward 2 or 3 years, I think we may need to place a couple of bets for the future by rookie listing a couple of younger bigger lads and maybe projecting a later pick to a KPP.

This is why if we win and finish above Melb and Essendon - as much as I would like to see Rich running around in purple ..taking a young KPP like Hurley would not be the end of the world. Especially if we can get a Swift or De Boer coming the other way in the 2nd round.

When Hayden and McPharlin retire ...Grover will be on his last legs - and Thornton may well not survive another 2 seasons (though I am not prepared to write him off yet). Drum, M Johnson and a few utilities will make up our defensive core - it will be a concern if we are hoping to push on to be a challenger in a 3-5 seasons time.

This is also why I think it is worth perservering with Kiwi and Murphy - is it worth trying the Murphy back exercise again?

Swallow is rated by the Roos and he would not come cheaply. Mundy for Swallow would be a loss for us but hey it is better than nothing if it happened.

Strength and that side is not the concern.

The constant hammy and thigh injuries are a genuine worry. Hoping against hope he isn't going to turn into a Dunn, because what we have seen has been very good. :thumbsu:

Would also accept Mundy for Swallow. Ball winning midfielder is more important than a forward of the play midfielder (which we seem to have plenty of), at this stage. Especially with the imminent retirement of Bell et al. over the next few years.

Like who? Crowley kicks a fair few goals, Headland too. Bell can kick a goal, but not from 50 metres. Mundy for Swallow would be robbing Peter to pay Paul, IMO. I would like to see Swallow in purple next year though. What we have in abundance is average KPP prospects, such as Murphy. Trade 'em.

Swallow didn't get away to the best of starts this season and was sent to VFL to get some form. Unfortunately he is 3 weeks through a 6 week ankle injury.
The link back to his home state (WA) would be weak like it is for most AFL players these days - the call home isn't as strong as it once was.

Got any KPP defenders?
That's what we need.

I reckon our draft picks will be 4, 22, 38, 54 and 70. It's looking like atleast 2 of Mundy, Murphy and Warnock will go home, so we will hopefully have a couple more selections if they do depart. With a lot of picks we should be able to get a good balance of midfielders, KPP and ruckmen with those selections.

I am. Can't believe he's named in the 18 today.

Of the 3 players rumoured to be returning to Victoria I see Murphy as the most important to retain. Not because he's a better player than Mundy and Warnock, but because his potential outweighs his trade value. With Pav, Tarrant, McPharlin, Grover and Solomon the wrong side of 25 Murphy is an important player going forward even if he doesn't play a lot this year or next.

If Warnock and/or Mundy go home we should get something decent in return, but the offer for Murphy will probably be a pick in the late 40's.

I'd be reasonably happy with that.

Ibbotson, Hinkley, Michael Johnson, Drum, Gilmore, Mundy, Head, Peake, Schammer, Mayne and Thornton all play that outside game across half back, wing or half forward. Our only inside players going forward are Foster and Palmer so an inside mid is much more important IMO than a flanker.

Reading from my page are ye?

Edit: I think it's pretty generous putting Schammer on that list. Probably pretty generous having him on any list that implies he can actually play any sort of sport that resembles football.

My inside source there are 5-6 players identified for the chop for the end of the year. I'm not sure Swallow is the answer. Despite what WHTP says 14 other clubs overlooked Swallow as well as us.

Also said they haven't traded Murphy because nobody wanted him.

Does anyone know where Mathew Moody is at?

I think he has OP, but I do not believe we should look at drafting him. We have enough outside players, Swallow would be a better option. IMO

What makes it worse I seem to remember we could have access to Swallow the year before when everyone passed on him but we chose Schofield!!!

Schofield was a PSD pick and Swallow was too young to be in the PSD in 2004. But I guess Freo, like every other club in the 2004 ND, passed on Swallow as a bottom age player.

from what i have seen, swallow has been average

i think he may have even been dropped to the reserves this year

i would rather go for the other west aussie in riggio. his kicking is first class and so is his attack on the ball
