Very uncalled for to try and make Raph a scapegoat in this match.

He did quite well tonight.

I must admit that Blake was ordinary though - Eade repeatedly capitalised on Blake's weaknesses. But Blake wasn't the only disappointment. There were plenty out there.

We were shut down, and the Doggies found their legs after the quarter time break. We need to look at what changes to match ups were made and what we need to do to reverse that. Eade also changed the structure of their offence and defence - making it 6 on 6 rather than allowing both teams a free man in defence.

I need to re-watch the match to fully understand what problems we had.

You called it KDon the 6 on 6 match ups was the catalyst.

Just got back from the game.

Umpiring was atrocious particularly in the first half, it knocked the wind out of the sails of the Saints. You lost your engune room in the final two qtrs, I dunno what happened there!
Then there was Reiwoldt who after the 1st qtr couldnt even buy a mark, I think the bad umpiring got to him. It was deflating and I dont even barrack for the Sainters. Gehrig was quiet. Kosi had a good first qtr but was missing in action after that (except for a goal in the last).
Also, I noticed the Saints playing the centre corridor in the 1st qtr and were killing the Doggies, but when the Doggies got their running game up and going the Saints seemed to change their game plan and move the ball along the flanks. I was cheering like mad in the 1st quarter and then the Doggies started spraying th eball at the goals and there was very little to get excited about.

But it all started with umpiring decisions that favoured the Doggiew and resulted in goals which kept them in the game and frustrated the Saints and their supporters.

i must have been watching a differant game.

pity those tall forwards dont apply any defensive pressure

gehrig should have stayed retired

reiwoldt should watch a few other captains to learn how to lead a team

kosi had hes good quarter for the year

Sorry Saints fans for bringing this to your board, but grow up mate. Not everything that happens in a game of football is the result of umpires decisions. Have a good hard look at yourself cause you've come off looking quite childish.

Commiserations Saints. Was certainly an interesting game. Good luck against the Cats next week.

Don't fret saints supporters.............it's just a glitch that is better had early than late in the season. The coach had the plan but as happened a few times last year the players could not implement it!

Other than a few soft saints players, the majority are more than capable with some the best in the league. The coach can coach, make no mistake about that but the players just didn't look interested once they saw the bullies overrunning them...........apart from a few e.g L. Ball.

Don't discount the game against the cats, Rossy will have them up for it!!

First off the umpiring in the first quarter got us up and running, and then in the second quarter got the Dogs up and running.

yeah i agree.. after the 1st quarter it looked like the umps were just trying to even the free kicks up, and then when the dogs got going it was so hard, it just looked like no one was even trying except for few (L.Ball,BJ)..and i was stunned to see that dal santo was one of our best on the report.. i thought he played shyte IMO.. allwell only round three..bring on the cats and GO SAINTS:o

I think both teams had their fair share of poor decisions.
Agree. I was spewing at our mis-treatment, but then some decisions went against the Sainters where I thought "gee, we were lucky there!".

Both teams poorly served by the umps, and the game result will probably taken all focus of their bad performance.

Umpires the only thing I noticed about the umpiring last night was that they recognised that the ball was being held in by the tackling player and finally have got it right by not paying holding the ball.........

I am extremley sick in the guts to the extent I couldn't even eat breakfast this morning.

But in saying this , I believe a loss like this will galavanise the St Kilda FC. This may even be a blessing in disguise.

I do not agree this will reflect any mental scars like the Hawthorn Game.

Let's not forget what happen to the cats in 2006 when they were beaten by WC when they were 50+ points up, as we all know they went onto win the flag the following year.

We just have to bite the bullet and move on. 7 days is a long time in footy terms, I think the Cat's game next week has come at a great time.

Most levelled headed response I have seen to umpiring on these boards in a while.

The umprring still had too much influence on the game. But it appeared to me just like you said it rough_edges.

Just to pick on 2 that really stand out; the Lake/Gehrig incident which resulted in a goal, the Aker push in the back, resulted in a goal.

Sammy Newman has been saying it for years, the umpires need to take a backstep and let some common sense reign. They are their to facilitate the game, not interfere with it.

My biggest concern is players actively not taking possesion of the ball for fear of being pinged for holding it.

I am still undecided about the hands in the back rule/interpretation.

You are delusional.

I saw plenty of shocking free kicks paid to St.Kilda throughout the game. The game was turned around due to the Doggies winning the centre and running the Saints off their feet.

You really have no idea.

has anyone noticed that this was posted by a carlton supporter and not a saints one. im a saints supporter and i actually got angry by some of the descions st.kilda got awarded, the umpires on a whole were shocking.

There were very few Saints fans blaming the umpiring. This did not affect the result as the Dogs (I said they would trouble us on other threads) are a good team and played well all over the ground (passengers - zero).

I did notice that Hayden Kennedy almost has to be forced by the arm to pay a free kick which would be good if the others had the same approach. No 8 was very bloody ordinary. I hope Ray Ray doesn't unpire with Kennedy much as you'd be totally confused as a player.

Comments on Raph unwarranted for this game. I don't like him in our team, but he played well. I can't remember any clangers from him at all. If you want to debate this, make sure you watch the tape and see him peel off his man to help out a number of times. Otherwise, please wait until his next sh!t game.

Yeah I noticed, that's why I apologised for arguing with him in the Saints board when it wasn't a Saints supporter I was arguing with :p

What did Firoa do in a game we lost?

He played as a defender for a chunk of the game and was good. Watch the tape if you don't believe me - involved in many contests and more than held his own. I thought he was too much of a soft c_ck to play back, but maybe if the match up is there it gives him another dimension.

I thought we were shit against Carlton.....A good team would have buried us in the first quarter

As for the tall timber up forward I shake my head.....The opposition don't need a spare man in defence if the big boys are going fly at the same time

We continually kick to Riewoldt with 3 opposition players hanging off him.....Got me thinking that our midfielders are brain dead

Don't blame Raph and the back line its the mid field that is shit

Dalsanto changes his mind that many times when he gets the ball he doesn't even know where he's going to kick it let alone the forwards

As for Milne crum to the forwards or get off the ground

I'm watching the Essendon - Carlton game tonight, and i'm thinking we were lucky to beat Carlton, because they have a secret weapon we dont have, "Passion".
I think the Saints have a great list, but that only give's us the potential of a great team.
As they said in The Castle , "Its the Vibe".
Cats have the Vibe, Saints have a good list.

The good thing is the list is fairly new with the likes of Geary, Schneider ( if thats how you spell it) King and Gardner and even Goddard, new to the side ( or back after a long time). If they can remain stable for a while and get "the vibe " we may be able to create a team that is stronger than the individual players.

Cheers. That was not a rhetorical (however it is spelt) question, i listened on the radio so have not seen footage yet.

I think that is grossly unfair. Carlton would have to be the least passionate team in the comp (maybe after freo when they are not playing west coast), so much so that purchased a captain into their side.

We have the passion and commitment equal to most teams, it just did not show up yesterday. Clearly we need work on the forward line structure, both kicking in and leading structure, especially if not moving it around quickly. Watch Hawthorn play, it is amazing how well organised they are.

I think the free-kick issue had alot to do with the pressure the teams were putting on. In the first quarter St.Kilda just looked so much more dangerous, taking their chances, finding space through the middle and moving quickly while the Bulldogs were slower coming out of defence and consequentially went wider when you flooded (Why do you do this?). This meant the Bulldogs moved the ball slower yet, and had to kick to contested situations where you guys wanted the ball more. This meant you guys were the ones attacking the ball and having a go, while we were a bit reactive and the umpires tend to pay free-kicks to the ball carrier, especially with the hands-in-the-back interpretation.

Then from the second quarter onwards the Bulldogs lifted their pressure above St.Kilda's level, causing the Saints to panic more and make more errors, whil we backed ourselves. Because the footy was to our advantage now more than it was to yours, we looked better and also got more frees because of the nature of the interpretations.

For what its worth I think the free-kick count levelled out throughout the night, but its decisions like the push-in-the-back against Akermanis that annoy me. He was going full-pelt, reaching out to grab the players jumper/shorts, and because of the stretch and pace in the process of grabbing the player inadvertently nudged him forward. I hate these kind of decisions because the player who has made the effort to do the right thing and almost perfectly pulled it off is punished.

Anyways, bad luck guys. You're a good side and I'm sure you'll bounce back against Geelong. You have a point to prove and who better to prove it against than the best side in the AFL.

With all due respect, when Riewoldt was beaten he was beaten 1 on one by Morris, he hardly had 3 hanging off him.

As for Milne crum to the forwards or get off the ground
If you're going to play 3 talls like you guys do, there should be no excuse for Milne not being at the fall of the ball. He's a more than capable crumber.

And Schneider as well, when he snapped that kick that was barely touched on the line, I was jumping outta me seat. Got one later on, so we should be doing well with those 2 crumbing everyone our talls dont get, but it just aint workin.

I think we got to take a positive out of negative! What happened, happened!
Lucky its early in the season, hopefully the coaching staff will make changes to the game plan, and players selected in the team and position played.
I was angry and disappointed by the game. But theres is light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully they will bring in some quicker player for the mid field rotation and kick the ball quick and long to give our forwards a chance to mark in one on one contest and if the ball spills give our crummers a chance?

We are not adapting to Llyons game plan, and i don't blame the players, we have an awesome list and should be beating sides like the dogs easily .

something is not right .

Maybe they believe that as well, there is no armchair ride in AFL.
