What annoys you when it comes to grammar? Does something annoy you about the way someone writes, or more to the point how they CAN'T write?

Anyway, the one that gets my goat is the use of you're, your, they're, there, they're, etc...

It's not hard. Really, it is not. People like Rohan, Jod, Dan26 and other annoy me just by screwing it up.

You're = You are.
Your = Is it your turn?
They're = They are.
Their = It's their choice.
There = I live over there.

Anyway, what grammar gets your goat when people abuse the English language?

hmm. Valid point. It used to upset me too, but I've gotten over it since I've been using sms. I still try to be as understandable as possible, but I just see poor grammar as being the type-version of slang speech. Everyone's different, so why should we all type the same?

Mis-use of words is a little annoying, but not enough that I can't understand what's being said.

I couldn't give a crap about incorrect grammer such as there, they're, your, you're etc.

Only thing that annoys me a bit is when people write huge paragraphs without much punctuation.

Written word doesn't bother me but one 'spoken' word really bugs me.

Fantastic.

One word with two hard 'a's in it but each pronounced by the majority differently.

1) fantastic fan and tas as in Tasmania (fair enough)

2) Fantastic fan pronounced 'fairn' and tas pronounced tair (arguably a dialect and fair enough)

but the aweful

3) fantastic fan pronounced 'fairn' and tas as in Tasmania is half one and half the other and ends up to be a phonetic contradiction.

People who write everything in CAPS.

1) It is harder to read

2) Caps emphasise words. Therefore, if someone writes everything in caps, it is likened to shouting.

I haven't seen many people do it on here recently, but when I do, and just let them know that they don't have to shout, because I can hear them just as well when they write in lowercase.

I know i'm not the best speller, but please cut me some slack. I am still at school.
One thing the really annoys me is when a person says something along the lines of "Ha - ha - I bet you"
I always pick people up on this, and tell them it's beat not bet and they rub it into me that I pick them up on the most stupid things. One thing I am good at though, is knowing what there, their and they're goes where. Various people I know tend to mix were and where around, but again, that's one thing I do not stuff up on.

Not really a spelling mistake this one, just a typing error. I always type Chicago as Chiacgo (I don't know why)
But when writing it free handly I always spell it Chicago.

Pluralising drives me crazy - The LLoyds, the Hirds, the Buckleys, the Riewoldts.
Jesus, have all of the above players got brothers playing?
The only pluralising should be for the Wakelins or the Vosses, or the Febeys.
This mode of speech is just so lazy, and all commentators and players seem to do it. Just like answering "yesno" to every bloody question asked of a footballer.

The zenith of dolorific prose are those instances where the compositor propends to intentionally discombobulate the audience by using portions of the lexicon that are at once archaic and unnecessarily verbose.

One thing that annoys me:

Brought, and bought....

It amazes me how many people get these 2 confused. They will say things like.."I bought it with me" and "I brought it from the shop"

That's just an example anyway.

I don't know why but Peter Daicos and his "I/we made mention of so and so" really ****s me. Tommy Hafey used to say it too when he was commentating.

Sorry Brett!

My spelling and grammar skills have gone downhill since I finished School and University. I also blame it on this site a bit; it lends itself to poor use of the English language.

I h8 when ppl write like this, and substitute u for you, u r for you are, ur for your, kewl for cool, b for be, da for the...and the list goes on. Not really grammar, but anyway. No offence to people who actually write like this, it's just a pet hate.

Brought and bought.

Saw and seen.

Lose and loose.

Learn and teach.

People who write an entire page without using a comma or full stop. It may be the ex teacher in me, but bad punctuation drives me mad.

I'm guessing your concern with grammar comes from your journalism studies, very few people under 20 seem to give a toss. I blame the emphasis on phoenetics, 'as long as it sounds right it is ok'.

One that gets my goat is the amount of people who spell 'loser' as 'looser'. Although it is ironic that someone who calls another person a loser is such a loser they cant even spell the word.

I really need to loosen up. ;)

Good grammar is a matter of opinion. Fortunately, English is an evolving language.

If I make a mistake with grammar which is picked up, I tend to laugh at whoever thinks they have the superior knowledge.

Those who concentrate on grammar tend to have shortcomings in other area's of knowledge.

I hate the snobbery of language!
