Anti clockwise vs clockwise

In Sydney and Brisbane the horses run clockwise.

In Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart they run anti clockwise.

Why? Does anyone know how this came about? Funny that clockwise racing is the Northern rugby states whilst the anti clockwise racing is the footy states. Doubt there's a connection there but it's interesting all the same.

Just like their choice of footy code those NSW and QLD people are weird!

LOL!, i was just asking the same question. It seems that NSW and QLD are the only places in the world where they run clockwise....why is that??

At Royal Ascot they run clockwise in the UK and many other UK venues also, but Victoria has it the right way i reckon lol anti-clockwise > clockwise imo

Some horses prefer anticlockwise, some clockwise.

And I think generally right hand jockeys prefer the clockwise as it's natural to reign in to the right. I also got told during my motorbike course that right handers generally found it easier with the right arcs around the track (clockwise) and lefties the left arcs (or anticlockwise).... which was true for me anyway.

How about Definitly Ready when he went up for the Galaxy last weekend didn't want to turn in the clockwise direction around the final bend and blew the race and caused problems lol.

You'd think that our racing bodies could agree on one direction to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Someone mentioned that at Royal Ascot they run clockwise and i have seen that the Grand National at Aintree seems to be anti-clockwise so it seems they have the same problem over there.

Japan Cup, Kentucky Derby, Asia, Middle East all seem to be anti-clockwise!

Haha, so true. Was definately ready for the start, went out hard early but definately wasnt ready for the right hand turn.

The reason behind it was In Victoria they wanted to make the races faster than in the UK (Ascot - it's only Royal Ascot when the queen is on track), a horse will naturally bend to the left when running loose. There for it means they run faster than if the track went the other way.
Well in NSW they wanted to do things differently than Victoria and ran the other way. Queensland followed.

You'll also see in form, that its easier for a Sydney horse to win in Vic than a Melbourne horse to win in NSW or QLD, this is the reason why.

QLD has always been a follower of NSW. I am sure one day they will learn to think for themselves
