hi,
currently i am running AVG 8.5 on my computer, however since the computer is outdated the computer cannot handle its operation and hence freezes. is there an alternative virus scanner the same as this but uses less ram?
Also how important is a virus scanner on a computer? will not having one cause problems, ie bank account hacks etc
cheers

I would say that a virus scanner is very important on a computer, especially if you use it to do you banking etc. Can't help you with the other part of your question, I do use Kaspersky Internet Security. But my computers is fairly new and can handle it.

Can you upgrade your ram? Get at least another 500 megs? Or why don't you just build a new system?

Avast is a pretty good virus scanner. www.download.com has a few virus scanners and u can tell by how many people download them to see how popular they are. I also find that avg does really slow virus scans for me once i have had it running on my pc for a few months and i have a pretty good pc

I use Avast on a pretty low spec PC without any issues. You can set it be your screen saver so it scans when you're not doing anything.

Avast is more intensive then AVG (better then AVG IMO) however will use more resources.

I guess avg just does not like me then, i am able to do a virus scan on avast in about a 3rd of the time it would take for avg:eek:

Hey I prefer Avast as well (use it), however it is more resource hungry then AVG.

You should use NOD32.

It isn't free, but it's probably the best scanner out there (along with Kaspersky) and it runs very lightly.

NOD32 is also good and its a pretty light program if i can remember correctly (been a few years since i have used it)

Does anyone have an opinion about Trend Micro?

I've been using it since 06 and it seems to be a pretty good program.

We use it at work, not bad. However our new French overlord will be installing bloody symantec in the near future.
