COLLINGWOOD could have all but one of its playing list to choose from in a fortnight as unlucky forward Sean Rusling nears a return to football in 2009.

Rusling has been limited to just 17 matches in his time at the Magpies, with a series of shoulder injuries hampering his time at AFL level.

He and teammate Ben Johnson, who broke his leg against Geelong last week, are the only Magpies on the club’s injury list ahead of round four.

Irish rookie Kevin Dyas makes his return to VFL football this weekend after close to eight months out with a hamstring injury.

While Heath Shaw (one week) and captain Nick Maxwell (two matches) are both out suspended, Collingwood can be buoyed by its healthy list.

The Magpies, who are 1-2 after three rounds, face stern tests in coming weeks with matches against the Brisbane Lions, Essendon on Anzac Day, North Melbourne, St Kilda and Carlton.

However one thing they haven’t had to worry too much about is injuries, with Rusling one of the few concerns.

The 22-year-old, who coach Mick Malthouse has suggested could even play in defence this season, has shown glimpses of brilliance in four years at the Lexus Centre.

Collingwood football manager Geoff Walsh said Rusling, who last year had a shoulder reconstruction, had been making good progress from his injury before copping a knock “in the wrong spot”.

“Three to four weeks ago he had a little bit of a setback on the track,” Walsh told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“He had a bit of contact which just stirred it up a fraction and just sort of set him back a little bit. We’re really just seeing, on a week-to-week sense, how he is.

“He’s going to be pretty close, not this week, but the following week.”

Rusling, known for his lightning-quick speed on a lead, would be almost certain to need a few matches at VFL level before being considered for a senior recall.

“Over the summer he would have participated in a couple of little scratch match-type things but he hasn’t played a serious game,” Walsh said.

The Magpies expect Johnson, who broke the fibula bone in his right leg against the Cats on Easter Thursday, to miss about six weeks.

The bone was not displaced meaning the experienced defender did not require surgery. He is wearing a protective boot and is on crutches.

what???? a sean rusling story without mention of "he can run 100metres in 8.5 secs, good strong hands etc...."

geez, is it the same sean rusling? lol.

jokes aside hopefully he comes back and gives us what we need GENUINE PACE in the forward 50.

question: can he, cloke, rocca and anthony play in the same forward line though?

i dont think so!

I feel real confident about Rusling returning after reading Walsh's comments on his latest setback.

He got a hit in the wrong spot and it put him back 3-4 weeks, WTF, BLOODY HELL.

What will happen when he gets a real hit that was meant to inflict damage. Doesnt exactly fill the confidence bag up.

This doesn't fill me with too much hope. A knock has set him back 4 weeks? It better have been a pretty big knock. Hope he get to play this year, i love the kid and feel he can add a lot to our forward line.

They all can't play in the same forward line, but they can all play in the same team. Anthony can play a key defensive role while pinch hitting in the forward line if someone is out of form or getting beaten on the day.

I'm surprised to see a Collingwood story without the conclusion of;

"Rusling plays for the same club as Heath Shaw and Alan Didak, who were embroiled in controversy last year after an intoxicated Shaw collided with a parked car on the way home from the Geebung Polo Club during the season. Didak, who was the passenger in Shaw's car, originally denied being present but was later shown to be lying when witnesses were interviewed. The affair was greatly embarrassing to Magpie president Eddie McGuire, who likened speculation over Didak's involvement to the mysteries of the Kennedy assassination".

At any rate, great to hear Rusling's on the mend, but he'll have some work ahead of him to break into the forward line. Best of luck to Sean.

HAHA I loved it :thumbsu::D

How fast can Rusling run the 100?

Does anybody know his time?
or any others in our team, i remember Wellingham being one of the fastest over 20m..

Where's Dawes?

Kicked 3 goals in the two's on the weekend and according to reports of the game could have kicked 6-8. According to Damien Peverell - "Could have kicked a few more but provided a strong target. A good day that could have been great"

We kicked 13.21 for the day, so our two's were pretty reflective of the seniors in that regard (except the two's won!)

Was in the train on squad for Beijing olympics as a teenager for the 400m relay,
By memory his time was either 44 or high 43second mark, that is seriously quick.
If he stays injury free and thats a big if he will becime our most important forward i have no doubt about this.

Totally agree.

If a knock in the wrong spot at training sets him back, is there any genuine hope that he'll ever remain injury free at AFL-game level intencity?

That can't be a standing start time surely? That's Australian record and close to world record pace.
