lol. Why not? First game of the year is NSW Swift v Adelaide Thunderbirds

The Swift will be out to avenge their shock elimination from last year’s final series after initially going through the home and away season undefeated. Despite a record breaking 13 consecutive wins, NSW were eliminated in straight sets following a losses to the Thunderbirds in the Major Semi-Final followed by a five-point defeat at the hands of the Magic in the Preliminary Final.

The strong rivalry between the two sides is developing with both teams featuring in two of the three final series to date. That rivalry is set to intensify on Sunday when former Thunderbird and Diamond Mo’onia Gerrard lines up for the Swifts after a move during the off-season.

Besides Along with Gerrard, Thunderbirds also lost the services of Diamonds Kate Beveridge and international Geva Mentor over the summer which will have a big impact on the court, however, don’t expect the South Australians of old.

Along with the injection of youth into the squad in the form of Madeleine Proud (debut), Kate Shimmin (debut), Cody Lange (debut) and Kara Richards (Vixens), the Thunderbirds have done away with the teal and logo - the defending champions now looking pretty in pink.

Little can separate these two sides with both teams claiming one championship apiece while the Swifts have a narrow head to head lead, claiming four victories from the seven meetings between teams since the inception of the ANZ Championship in 2008.

Gonna take the revenge, home court and new player v old team angle here and take Swifts -8.5. The thunderbirds look like they'll be sporting a young team and we all know playing in a different uniform for the first time can be quite unsettling so Swifts win this by DD. Wait what...

Like those stats twarby :thumbsu:

For such a fast sport you would've thought an away strip would be half an idea...their uniforms are almost identical lol.

Swifts up by 8 early :thumbsu:

Northern Mystics v Southern Steel
The season gets underway in New Zealand on the Monday when the Northern Mystics host the Southern Steel in a battle of north island versus south.

Perennial performers, the Steel has made consecutive ANZ Championship final series but failed on both occasions to progress beyond the semi-final stage including a 50-42 defeat to the Magic last year.

Both teams have recruited aggressively over the summer in a bid to bolster their squad to make a challenge on the title with the Steel acquiring Natasha Chokljat from the Melbourne Vixens, though injury threatens her impact, and former Magic, Julianna Naoupu along with Jade Topia (Pulse). Former Silver Fern shooter Tania Dalton is expected to suit up for the Steel on Monday night in a shock return as a short term replacement for injured New Zealand international Daneka Wipiiti.

Their northern counterparts, the Mystics, have been criticized in many circles for their under-achievement, having never made a final series in the first three seasons, but the recruitment of prized signing Anna Scarlett and former Steel Megan Dunn is sure have a positive impact.

Competition is always even between these two teams with both sides sharing three victories each from their six previous fixtures since the league started.

With ya twarby, looks like the Mystics have something to prove. On them at -6.

Swifts up by 17 in the last :thumbsu:

lol seems twarby has a bit of knowledge on the sport...might be the short skirts and tight bodies that got him interested haha.

Any chance this could actually be a profitable sport for us all? I don't think i've ever watched a full game but apparently the Swifts didn't lose a game all of last season which is pretty impressive.

Just had a look at last year and the Swifts average winning margin was a fraction over 10ppg and won by DD 7/13 games. Assuming they go in as favourites each match i think we can back them with a bit of confidence we'll end up with a profit. Going out in straight sets in the finals won't help the cause either.

Let's see if we can make it 3/3.

Going to fade the T'birds again and run with the Vixens -13.5. In a preseason match they beat them by 16 points, add to that Mentor, who is apparently a star recruit and ex T'bird player and i can see another thumping on the horizon.
