Just this afternoon I was with an icon of the club who said the problem was the SCG Trust who had been ripping us off and when the ANZ deal come up we jumped at it due to what we make. Its like Richmond, Norf and Hawthorn who are bankrolled by those interstate games, same for us. The Trust has now started to come around, but we are tied in until 17. We hate it , but that's it.

Ahh thanks, if we profit from it then yeah fine, but the part that annoys me is playing finals there more than anything, give up such an advantage

I think a few of the NRL clubs are in a similar situation, it's the main reason why Souths (who used to play their home games next door to the SCG) were enticed to make the move to ANZ, otherwise ANZ would have a hard time attracting permanent tenants.

While ANZ might be closer to the geographic centre of Sydney (indeed, one of our former mods lives a lot closer to ANZ than the SCG!) it is in a difficult spot to get to due to the way the transport connections (or lack of them!) work up here.

Cost me 90 bucks in a taxi to get there, took me through paramatta and some other areas of town, no wonder melbourne is a better city

Better grounds easier to get around.

I just think the scg is superior in every way lets break the deal as soon as possible

ANZ is the least of our worries at the moment.
We have won 2 prelims there.
The ground is the same for BOTH teams.

Take the pies games out the record is good enough i guess, but it looks disgusting as a surface and the crowds look yuck, its not our ground

The deal was agreed before the Sydney Olympics in 97 by the AFL with the idea that North were coming up here at that time to play 3 games a year with a view to take on even more games in time. We were being ripped off by the SCG Trust regarding rent, facilities and ground access so agreeing to the deal was a easy thing to do at the time with the view the terms that were agreed money wise between us, North, the AFL and the Stadium Owner at the time - the NSW Government.

Little less than a year latter North show their "true" commitment to Sydney and in time bolt from not only Sydney but the agreement. Thus once the Olympics are over and 2002 rolls around, it leaves us with a rent agreement at ANZ Stadium when it first opened that lost us money despite the crowds we were getting (basically we were paying the rent for two games for each game played there for the first 2 years thanks to North). Lucky for us the AFL took on the rent aspect of the contract because of the amount of money we lost. The NSW Government also had to sell their interest in the stadium because it was costing them money to operate the Stadium and the new owners rather focus on the turf concerns of the people they pay to use the Stadium and not the ones who pay to use it.

As for the SCG Trust in between us signing the deal at Homebush in 97 and starting playing there in 02 we signed a new contract that improved our ground access, got us a training ground in summer and we went for paying rent to not paying at all for a period of time. Now we have a rent deal that isn't over the top but at the same time doesn't make the SCG Trust fall over themselves for us.

No doubt we got screwed by the AFL and North with the Homebush deal in 97, but come 2017 we should be back home full time, however what the AFL does with finals isn't up to us and they could force our hand if they do a side deal to make Homebush the home for Finals in Sydney (which they are entitled to do, its not up to us or the Giants where we play finals in Sydney as the Home Team, we get a Home City final) but its likely they will keep it simple. SCG for the Swans and Showgrounds for the Giants.

Bring on 2017

After setting the precedent last year by playing a final at Sleepy Hollow, the AFL could not in all conscience move a final from the SCG. Could they? ;)

swans doing all they can do avoid a final at homebush in 2014 anyway

Forget about whether it disadvantages us relative to playing at the SCG, the surface there is not even close to professional standard. Players have complained for years that they can't keep their footing (evident even from the stands).

I absolutely love the SCG but I have no problem whatsoever with the Olympic Stadium. I will agree it needs 40K + to really get some atmosphere, but waddya expect? It's a really big stadium, built for really big events with really big crowds. And once you get a crowd of that sort of dimension, it's got as much atmosphere as anywhere.

Parking's fine, train almost to the gate, near the demographic heart of Sydney...

What killed the atmosphere last Saturday was the moment we realised we were going to lose to them again.

I know there is a contract that limits the SCG capacity but the city of Sydney are missing out on the opportunity to have a 60000 to 80000 capacity ground that would rival anything on the planet or atleast spend some $$$ on ANZ to redevelop it to what is required.
