Hi,

For a subject at uni this semester I'm writing an ethnographic research essay and the subject of observation for the report had to be connected with the state. Naturally, I chose the ANZAC Day game.

Whilst I have my own set of observations, I've undoubtedly missed things having actually gone to watch the game as well (which was outstanding), and I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the order of proceedings. So basically, who performed, in what order, what they performed, what the Banner said, what happened at the conclusion of the match and just anything that could be connected to ANZAC Day in general.

Anything you can remember would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

WFH

I went to two games that day, the Ess Coll clash and the North Richmond one and one thing that I noticed that really struck me was that despite there being 40,000+ less people at the Rich/North game during the formalities before the bounce the Ess/Coll crowd was much more quiet (and therefore respectful) then the smaller crowd.

I've got a Record here, and I'm supposed to be studying myself, so I'll give ya what I can and thank you in return for the procrastination opportunity:

1pm Air Force Band -- Force 10
1.35pm Presentation of footballs, video tribute, veterans motorcade, performance by John Schumann and The Vagabond Crew (they played "I was Only Nineteen" and "Waltzing Matilda", the latter as the diggers went around in their cars)
2.01pm Umpires enter ground
2.02pm Collingwood enters
2.05pm Essendon enters
2.07pm Teams come together to run through combined banner (can't remember what it said but there was a big ANZAC logo on it)
2.13pm Teams and umpires take position for official observance ceremony, including The Ode, The Last Post, one minute's silence, The Rouse and national anthem performed by Corporal Roxanne Moxham from Air Force Band (Force 10)
2.18pm Guard vacates arena, coin toss
2.20pm Match commences
2.25pm Half-time NAB AFL Auskick program
4.55pm Post-match presentation of the ANZAC Medal and Trophy by RSL Victorian branch senior vice-president and Vietnam veteran Robert Webster.

The umpires were booed.
The silence during the ceremony was chilling.
There was a live cross to diggers in Afghanistan (on the screens).

Good luck with the assignment. Now I've gotta get back to my bullshit.

I assume you are studying anthropology. What uni are you at?

Yep, I'm doing an anthropology subject as part of sociology at Melbourne Uni. I take it you are studying or studied anthropology?

Thanks a lot for the run down BBC, much appreciated. Good luck with your study, it's a horrible time of year. All the same though, only a few weeks till release.
