Which APS team gets the most school boy support?
I know Brighton get big crowds at home
and Xavier and Scotch are similar...
The cordner eggleston and the caulfield brighton matches obviously get huge numbers..
and MGS have had some huge crowds this year
but who gets the biggest?

I would have said scotch from watching talent for the last 5 years but this year they have had no support. This year id say probably Melbourne or Brighton would have the biggest support.

Yesterday's game of MGS v. BGS had a massive crowd. Huge number of boys from both schools, as well as many other interested spectators.

The MGS crowd have put together a massive 'army' - known as the 'grammar army'. They are unrivalled in the APS in terms of support for their team (vocal, musical, attendance etc.). However i was very impressed with the numbers that Brighton had.

It was a great game of schoolboy football - brighton trying to win their last game of the year, Mgs trying to win a premiership (with a few of their stars missing). Top game all round.

Round 1 Xavs v MGS, xavier had a pretty big crowd.

yes thats true
brighton had a very big crowd but didnt seem to pull togethor a lot of chants/songs yesterday...they do pull up an impressive home crowd though

yes lets all charge our glasses for grammar are on the charge!

advance grammar army i say!

fine bunch of chaps those.
Sarcasm ain't funny - especially when it's not true. We're very well behaved and represent the school very well, unlike your boys and fathers from Skevs, who were continually racist against us. We are very vocal in support of our team, yet still applaud good opposition plays (e.g. a freakish one hand mark from watts on the weekend).

If only you could teach the skevs crowd to be a little better behaved

And just for the record - skevs had a shocking crowd against us. The game was at skevs and they would have had barely over 30 boys attend. No school spirit.

Interesting comment. Musical instruments are banned under APS Rules. At the last match of 2006, a trumpet player was told to stop playing. Oh, well. One rule for Brighton and Melbourne, another for the rest. Well done, APS!

oh you are a joke.

i mean seriously, you base the school spirit of a school on one game of football? i think that proves how small minded you are.

oh, and you can't buy school spirit, id like to see who dadsy would address that cheque to when he attempted to though? "Mr S. Spirit" perhaps?

skevs, scotch and xavs easily have more "real" spirit than grammar.

grammar have it in their 150th year due mainly to throwing the full weight of their school's deep pockets behind their first XVIII in order to ensure premiership glory in this "significant" year.

that is not school spirit. although it does have many other names.

see:
-bogus
-cheating.
-bandwaggoning.
-complete lack of sportsmanship.
-pathetic.
-impropiety.

oh and there was no racism at the skevs-grammar match, stop defaming st kevins, you are wrong and perhaps have issues regarding honesty and your ability to display it.

mate..a couple of points
brighton didnt have any musical instruments
and another point, scotch have bag pipes and drums and it adds to what makes them scotch

its funny, the two schools that invented, played the first game and pionerred this great sport, are the two schools that use instruments

the drums, namely sudo, SOS and NOS at MGS are part of the MGS folklore and should not be banned from any APS event because their legacies have been around before the APS was made

a couple of points
firstly, why would someone complain about racism if there was none; considering we won the match and had nothing to complain about?
people wouldnt make that sort of thing up unless it was true because it is a pretty serious matter.

i ask you this, what do u base school spirit on?
grammar do not just revolve around football; we have sellouts to all musical events, drama events and other sports...
you cant claim that other schools have more "spirit" than us until you actually come to our school and feel the buzz when events such as HOR are coming up...
give us your definition of spirit

and on to football
melbourne grammar is in its 150th year, which is a pretty big event for any establishment, however the big crowds at all school events in not because of this. the year 12 group is very keen and has made it their aim to make events big with lots of support.
the success on the field is not completely due to scholarship players as the depth in the year 12 year level is why we are performing so well

1st in cricket: no cricket scholarships
1st in vollwyball: no scholarships
2nd in rowing: no scholarships
2nd in tennis: no scholarships
etc..as well as seconds teams in most sports going almost underfeated

on to football, yes MGS have some scholarships...as do most schools...however the reason for this success is because of the yr 12 boys passion and hard work

the team that beat brighton on the weekend proved this
the depth of this year level is great
the entire midfield, the ruckmen, the boy that kicked the winning goal
the bulk of our defense are all average yr 12 boys

note, on the weekend, the team was missing three "scholarship" boys and still won, also missing star speedy in and under midfielder haysey

the reason for success is because this year level has great depth

note, the latter of the videos was from a couple of years ago when grammar wasnt doing all too well...that is not a bandwagon 150th year crowd there...

and the first video was on the weekend
try getting a consistent away crowd like that (especially in brighton) even in a good year...

Seeming though you want to have an argument over this:
1.) School spirit is ever present in all matters of school life. If a school only gets big attendances every so often then they have a patchy, non-committed school spirit. MGS - all 3 nights of Quad play sold out, big crowds at cricket and HOR, Orchestra night sold out, consistent big crowds at the footy. MGS has plenty of school spirit which is always present during all forms of school life.

2.) School spirit comes from within and requires a combination of leadership and an already present spirit - not from 'mr spirit' or whatever you called it (you idiot). Seriously, if that was the case with all these scholarships, wouldn't people be turned off supporting their school because none of their 'own' would be playing?

3.) Your points are baseless and don't make sense

4.) I did not start having a go at skevs, rather you had a go at mgs and i merely pointed out the facts of what happened when we played you.

5.) you claim there was no racism - just ask your headmaster (who was contacted by ours) if you need any clarification of whether or not there was racism.

6.) Don't accuse me of demamation - I am RIGHT, you are WRONG. Also, the great man Simon Kemp WIlson QC, Member of the Carlton board, will eat you up for breakfast...

7.) The issue of scholarships has been raised many times on bigfooty - and we proved that without them (on the weekend missing the u16 schols.) that we could be a very good team in Brighton. Then we have a few indiginous boys, but they were all here last year and played either 2nd XVIII or 10As - hardly what you would call quick fix stars. They are here on indiginous scholarships, repeat indiginous scholarships, and have brought much greater benefit culturally to the school than they have on the footy field.

8.) The reason for our success this year has been to a very strong yr 12 group and a lot of hard work training.

9.) Just wondering mr edar 07, how do those sour grapes taste?

where were your crowds last year? and the year before? and the year before that? and so on...

how many people do you get to the aths and swimming days? cross country? cricket? etc

our headmaster hasnt mentioned anything about racism to us, and why is that? because there was none.

if you were at the game (which i hope you were) how would you know about any racism from skevs supporters when all your supporters were all scattered along the wing and skc's were behind the goals? unless what you are saying is based on hear say, which i dare say it is.

one year level doesnt make a school spirited. so wave goodbye to those twelves (led by charles shaw, who is a great bloke might i add) and we'll see how "spirited" you are.

just couldnt resist naming some esteemed grammar alumni there could you? says it all doesnt it.

how is good old kempy going these days? some nice donations i hope...

still havent worked out where my allegiances lie?
well ill give you 3 hints.

its in toorak.
it has only won a single APS footy premiership.
and yet it still has more spirit than your school and has consistently drawn good crowds to its games through the years of mediocrity.

and yes congrats to your sporting teams, can only comment on cricket but they were excellent. handled themselves well, exciting ton by shaw. was a good spectacle.

mate
what i was trying to say was that even in brighton we pulled that crowd; i worked out you are a skevs boy awhile ago

i was trying to say that if skevs couldnt pull a great crowd at home, try getting a crowd that big all the way out in brighton, even if you are playing well

how do we know about the racism? there was more than one of us on the field
some of us played and witnessed it
it isnt just one person saying this

this video was from 3 or 4 years ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36udVl6Xz3w
for an away match...

(you can actually see shawry in the crowd so it was before his days with the first 18)

so its not just this year that is pulling big crowds as shown by this vid

the reason why grammar was scattered along the wing against skevs is because it is flat behind the goals and the skevs boys werent moving at the end of the quarter so we stayed there (until the last quarter)...

we get good crowds at cricket on the friday nights, however everyone else is playing their own sport aswell

also, next year i think things will be the same if not better because their has been good grounds set for the future in all activities (plays, orchestra, sport) etc
and there is a strong year 11 group coming through aswell

haha think the mgs guy has won the battle here. i here there crowd was awsome at the brighton game and xavier which were both away games. went to the hailerbury game where they also pulled a good good size crowd and i am guessin it will continue especially with there big game next week at the G.

We know about the racism at the game is because some of us actually played and heard the stuff coming from the crowd. It was also mentioned in the rooms after the match to all the players.

Brock, don't misunderstand me. I think musical instruments are great. They sure add to the atmosphere. However, they are banned under APS Rules; ridiculous but true. Get your Director of Sport to show you.All I am saying is if we are going to have instruments, and I am in favour of them, let the APS be consistent and not block some schools from playing them

yeah fair enough...i see your point, that its the APS
but i cant think think of any time in the last 3 or 4 years that a musical intrument has been banned from a football match

even if its an official rule, i presume they are turning a blind eye to it at the football cos there have been instruments at a lot of matches ive been to

Xavs and Brighton always had the biggest crowds. My mob Caulfield is somewhere in the middle of the pack. Wesley always had the worst.

Years ago Wesley used to get some of the biggest (i'm talking 20-30 years ago).

This was when all Wesley home games were played on the front turf on a friday afternoon, and the school had afternoon classes off so that they could go and watch.

Unfortunately that doesn't happen anymore. It's a shame.

2006 last match of season Scotch v Haileybury. Trumpeter banned.
