Suggestion was he didn't look overly interested.Originally posted by Sezzac1
Yes Justin Hoggan. He broke his leg last week apparently and obviously didn't play today.
As the final siren went with CG 14 points up (87 to 73) the CG kids went absolutely nuts. You would have thought they had won a Grand Final. Turns out they had, of sorts.
It turns out it was the first time in history that CG had ever beaten Xavier at Xavier in 1st Footy.
The victory was set by Andrew McQualter. Who was BOG IMHO but yes I am bias.
I kept McQ’s stats for the day and registered……
28 kicks (4 ineffective) 11 handballs (3 ineffective) 5 marks, 7 tackles, 5 tap-ons, 6 shepherds, 2 Frees for, 0 Frees against and 2 goals (1 from 50 off his non-preferred left).
Already in the last 10 months, since I last saw him play for Vic Country, he has put on physical size and grown to 180cm. His ball winning ability in the heated congestion of the centre square and at stop plays, and his use of the footy by hand or foot was as good as anything I’ve seen running around in the TAC this year.
His leadership ability comes naturally. During the warm up drills before the game he was organizing the team and calling the shots as the Coaching staff looked on. On the field he worked tirelessly running all match from contest to contest. When the game needed to be won in the second half he was the man that grabbed all the crucial disposals under pressure.
At the 15 minute mark of the last qtr, with scores close to level, McQ took a free kick from beside the oppositions point post. He passed the ball 40 metres across the ground to a team-mate on the HBF and CG were off and running.
After a series of kicks along the boundary the ball was eventually kicked to Stefan Garrubba, who marked 30 out on the angle. Garrubba fired out a quick handball into the centre corridor to the running McQ who stroll in and kick the goal from 10 metres out. He had run over 150 metres to get that handball.
I can’t wait to see McQ line up in the U18 Champs.
Speaking of Stefan Garrubba, he had a quiet first half playing onball. Got few kicks but dropped a few marks and never looked overly comfortable.
The CG Coach pulled the master stroke when he moved SG to FF and had his other forwards play up the ground the give SG plenty of room to move. He kicked 4 goals including 3 in the last. He did okay but he gets picked in the draft ahead of McQ It will again be proven 110% that athletes get picked ahead of pure football talent.
Other to show something for CG…..
Note: Te team sheets supplied at Xavier did not have the players DOB, Height or Weight listed so I have no idea if some of the kids can be drafted or their Hts and Wgt. I just given an un-educated guess.
Robert Chisolm (183-184cm, 82 kg) Played FF and took some brilliant one grab marks early on. Kicked 4 gls for the game. Moves extremely well over the ground, has a huge leap and nice set shot kicking style. (Was told he can be drafted this year)
Dwain Bailey (183-184, 80kg) Tough, hard at it sort who has a real crack at the contest. Takes a nice mark and runs all day. Looks a tad rough around the edges but his aggressive nature stood out and he racked up the possessions. (I saw him play for CG last year so I suspect he could be drafted)
Robert Eddy (182-183, 82kg) No nonsense player with strong hands and a sense of poise under pressure playing on the backline.
For Xavier College.
Matthew Spangher 191cm, 77kg (His stats from TAC magazine) On the Eastern Rangers list but like McQ plays in the APS each week instead. Played okay in patches but as a ‘Spotter’ suggested he is still growing into his body and can looking gangly and unco at times. He took some nice marks but also over-ran the ball badly on occasions and fumbled when not under pressure. Not terrific below his knees. I would like to see him play again before I comment further. He is bottom age in the draft, making the cut off by just 5 weeks.
Stephen Doyle 187-188cm 75kg. Took a number of good marks and appeared to fly for a lot more without success. Fought hard for the ball on the ground and showed some skill with his disposal at times. Vintage mentioned this lad as one he liked. I don’t know his age.
Not many of the others really got my attention. Most were around the 180-182 mark with not enough natural flair to stand out or 190-192 and slow lumbering types.

#1,
Being more of a footy purist I would like to think McQ will atleast get picked before Garrubba but those other TAC watches on BF tell me I'm dreamin'.
McQ is currenty 4 times the footballer SG is and has 10 times the potential. Garrubba runs fast. Big deal, so can David Clarke.
I wouldn't even like to hazzard a guess where they may go in the draft. I think alot will depend on performances in the Under 18 Champs and the Draft Camp. SG may not even make the Vic Metro team.
McQ went to the Vic Testing Day last year but I have no idea where or even if SG went to the Test Day.
u sound like ur in love with McQ
