Berry

Nearly went Florent here but due to Berry’s leadership qualities I feel like he fits in perfect here. Crows have struggled with losing kids as much as anyone, don’t see that issue with Berry. At his height he will provide strong rebound and help develop a defence develop for their flag tilts over the next 3-5 years with Lever and Doedee.

Brisbane
Ainsworth, Rotham, Witherden, Mutch

After missing out on Bowes (no brainer bid IMO), Ainsworth will be their poster boy to shoot them up the ladder, I expect him to play 12-16 games in 2017. Rotham was a best available selection and will add another dimension to their defence. WItherden will be a great asset off half back in the future with his nice skills which is something Brisbane are lacking. Although I don’t think Mutch will ever be the number 1 or 2 man in the midfield he can develop a good role player while adding versatility with his inside/outside work along with playing through the wings and flanks. I don’t see GWS matching a bid for match at all.

Carlton
Brodie, Kerr

A bid on Setterfield seems right for Carlton at 5, even though GWS will match I personally think he is the best tall midfielder in the draft. Brodie is still a fantastic pick at 5, if the draft was post champs Brodie would have been selected at pick 1 and will certainly help Cripps in the midfield. Although there is a lot of romance in Kerr to Carlton it makes sense the key forward gets there, has shown he can kick goals and lots of them.

Collingwood
Brennan Cox

After losing their best 22 key defenders in the trade period, Cox looks a great pick up here as a rebounding, intercept defender. The All Australian CHB has also shown his ability’s up forward in 2016 at reserve level for Woodville-West Torrens.

Essendon
McCluggage, Simpkin, Scharenberg

McCluggage will be the first name called out in November and has shown he is the best player in this pool. His work through the midfield along with his ability to hit the scoreboard is outstanding. Simpkin could fall anywhere in this draft, but going to Essendon at pick 21 looks good and will depth to their half forward/outside mid stocks allowing him time to develop. Scharenberg was BOG in the SANFL and looks a like for like replacement role wise for Jobe Watson, he will also be given time to develop in 2017 but is certainly one player that could play 22 AFL games in their first season due to his exposure to senior SANFL footy

Fremantle
English, Guelfi, Cumming

Two WA based kids makes a good haul for Fremantle. English is that key forward they have been crying for and will be helped by the recruitments of Kerstin and McCarthy as he won’t be pushed to debut. Guelfi is a strong accumulator and will add good midfield depth over the next 24 months as he was a late developer before pushing to be best 22. Cumming displays great pace and agility off half back while being a good ball user, my belief is he will develop into a hard running wingman

Geelong
Luke Ryan, Graham

Ryan is such a Stephan Wells pick if I have ever seen one! Rebounding defender from Coburg in the VFL is a good pick at 26, rumour has it Swans are into him at pick 19. Jack Graham is a great cover for Caddy and could push for senior selection from word go, injuries have hampered the Larke Medallist since the carnival which forced him to sit out the carnival.

GWS
McGrath, Setterfield, Perryman, Macreadie

McGrath is the man they wanted when they traded up the draft and that’s the man they get IMO. Setterfield and Macreadie will be Giants no matter where a bid comes due to the Giants work into them over the past 24 months. Perryman is a hard one to read but if the price is right they will match. Their strong academy crop means they won’t be able to take them all, therefore they don’t match bids for Mutch, Sproule and Cumming.

Gold Coast
Bowes, Taranto, Petrevski-Seaton, Scrimshaw, Scheer

Don’t think their good be a better result from this draft for the Suns. Get their man Bowes for essentially pick 4. Taranto may be the best player from this pool when we look back in 5 years’ time due to his power and match winning ability, should feature at AFL level in 2017. SPS may be viewed as a flight risk but with the Suns strong indigenous culture I think they may be able to get the best out of him. Scrimshaw will be a perfect replacement for Malceski off half back but I am of the view that he may end up being a tall outside midfielder. Scheer will end up at the Suns no matter what and they will cop going into deficit in 2017 but will not take academy selection Josh Williams in the back end of the draft.

North Melbourne
Venables, Zac Fisher, Parfitt

Midfield/forward depth for North in this draft. After taking all key defenders 2 years ago and adding McKay to Daw and Brown as forwards I think this crop suits North. Venables is a powerful half forward inside midfielder who may play in his first year while Fisher and Parfitt are 2 of the most proven u18s to this date due to their U18 championship performances (Fisher All Australian 2016, Parfitt All Australian 2015) while they have both played senior footy at their state league clubs. Fisher is my favourite player of the draft while Parfitt had a fantastic finals series for North Adelaide hoping between the reserves and u18s.

Port Adelaide
Gallucci, Battle, Villis, Powell-Pepper

I feel as though Port have their key defenders and flank players covered as far as a needs basis goes. So went with midfield depth in an athletic inside mid in Gallucci who I feel adds something they don’t have. Alex Villis who is a 100% outside midfielder but I believe has the best skills in this draft and the powerfull Sam Powell-Pepper who is an absolute bull while also being adapt to play up forward aswell. After the delisting of Schulz and Butcher I have taken Battle with their second pick, think he fits extremely well with their needs while he is the most proven key forward in the draft.

Richmond
Drew

Best available with their pick. Will add great depth to a strong developing midfield with Caddy, Prestia, Martin, Cotchin, Miles etc. Drew is a strong inside mid who has shown an ability to play tall through the midfield while also be able to win plenty of the football.

St Kilda
Cedric Cox, Poholke

Midfield depth and outside speed/class was on the agenda for the Saints. Cedric Cox is a great user of the football and will be able to use his skills, class and speed on the outside of the contest for the Saints playing through the flanks (including half back) and wings. Poholke adds an athletic and powerful dimension to the Saints midfield while also abit of versatility being able to play up forward, will have to buy in time in 2017 for a game with the additions of Steele and Stevens to the midfield.

Sydney
Logue, Hayward,

Sydney get their man that they apparently traded up for. Fits perfectly in their defence for 2017 before either becoming the number 1 man once Grundy retires or moves further up the field due to his athleticism. Will Hayward will take time to develop his body but is a goal kicking machine and will be an ideal foil for Buddy and Tippett due to his speed, evasiveness and his ability to play both high up the ground and deep forward, late bolt up the order due to his outstanding finals series.

West Coast
Marshall, Bolton, Waterman

West Coast may look for the best available here and take Todd Marshall. They are a good fit for him due to fact they can give him time to develop in the WAFL and not need instant impact from him. I think he is the best key forward on this draft on pure potential with his 1 percenters outstanding, just needs to kick more goals. Bolton in my opinion will slide because at this stage he is only an impact player, keeping him in WA may also be the best for him as I have heard he may be a flight risk. Some more romance in this draft with West Coast matching a bid for Jake Waterman. On looking at this draft as an overview if a bid came any early the Eagles may not match it due to snapping up Marshall earlier on.

Western Bulldogs
Florent, Sproule

The Premiers get stronger with this one. Florent is a little favourite of mine and has displayed some elite football throughout the backend of the season and would fit into the Bulldogs game style perfectly playing through the flanks and wings before developing into a true midfielder in the 3rd-4th year. Sproule is a developing swingman who will start as a defender offering depth there while also being a serious threat up forward as shown in the National Championships.

**Melbourne and Hawthorn did not obtain a pick within the first 2 rounds

I find it interesting that you have Freo taking English at 7. Our recruiting department has reiterated every year for the last four that they will take best available with the first round. Including saying that after this years trade period. They genuinely seem to have followed this policy.
Is your reasoning needs based or do you think English is a better option than either Petrevski-Seaton or Logue

I have gone on a needs basis to an extent, i do rate SPS higher buut not Logue. 203cm players of English's ability do not grow on trees while you may find a midfielder at 40 that can have the same output as a pick 10 in this draft due to its evenness. English has an oppitunuity to develop over the next 2-3 years with McCarthy and Kersten coming into the club along with Appeness and Clarke being able to shoulder Sandis ruck load once he retires. Hope this helped!

like your selections for us AFLprospectss very happy with Ainsworth and Witherden although with the players you had available at our picks i would prefer- Simpkin or Florent over Rotham and C.Cox, Drew, Powell-Pepper or Fisher over Mutch. also would be delighted if Jarrod Berry slid a few spots from where you have him and we could nab him at our current pick 16.

i feel Simpkin and Florent fill a need for outside midfield/fwd class that we desperately need over another 3rd tall type defender in Rotham, i like Witherden though as he is projected to progress into a midfield role, (although if we got Berry there would be no need to go Witherden IMO) and i see Witherden as a better prospect than Rotham anyway.

i have very little knowledge of Mutch as i hardly take any notice of other clubs academy guys, do you see him as a definite better player than the alternatives i have mentioned or do you see him as a needs type player for us?

thanks for your PD, really get into the draft speculation.

Venables suits our needs. Burst pace on the outside of our inside mids. Wouldn't mind Bolton at one of our 2nd picks if available.

The important thing with Rotham is he is not just a 3rd tall defender as he almost plays as a small. He can play on the wing as well as down back while down back he is a rebounding intercept marker which is something i view Brisbane not having on their current list. its hard to rank where simpkin will fall due to his injury interrupted year but 16 may just be a little bit too low for me. Florent is certainly someone who will come into consideration with pick 16 but being a vic metro kid there is always concerns on retaining them in the future! Powell-Pepper, Drew and Fisher will fall in the late 20s-30s, i think 24 is abit of a reach for those boys. Cox fills a need and most certainly could end up at Brisbane, but Mutch is that inside outside accumulator who is good inside the stoppage then spreads. Had a fantastic carnival where he averaged 27 disposals for NSW and 22 for the ALLIES while in the TAC he averaged 34 disposals. They are all certainly considerations for Brisbane but predicting anything outside pick 8 is really tough this year!

Venables suits our needs. Burst pace on the outside of our inside mids. Wouldn't mind Bolton at one of our 2nd picks if available.
I believe Bolton cant leave WA, that is why he has slipped to West Coast in the late second round. Fisher and Parfitt also display some pace and clean skills on the outside too, would be happy with them in the 2nd round also.

Love your Sydney picks. 10/10
Thanks mate! The only other person who would come into consideration with pick 10 is Jack Scrimshaw. While at 19 i would have taken Florent if he is still there or there was a thought on taking Simpkin but i feel Hayward fills a need and can play a role the Swans are lacking!

Hayward just looks like a great talent, more tools than Sicily and looks to have solid awareness and creativity up the ground.

Nice job. Would be happy with Bolton at WC but think we need an inside mid to pick up the slack when Priddis and Mitchell go in a year or two more than a forward to replace Kennedy.

I agree that they will need to prepare for those loses but i feel they already have those players on the list to an extent (Partington, Sheed, Cole, Duggan) and can top that up later in the draft or in future drafts for that big bull inside midfielder!

mmmm not crash hot on Brisbane's picks.

At 17 I would definitely go Florent if Berry is gone, and would more likely draft Witherden at 17.

Brisbane's needs; HFF, HBF, inside bull, outside speed. And speed, speed, speed.

You have the 3 WA prospects clustered together with only an Academy prospect breaking them up, so it seems reasonable that needs may be a factor.

as far as your assesments on brisbanes needs, HFF and HBF are clearly covered by my picks for them (Ainsworth, Rotham and Witherden). i don't think Brisbanes need for speed is covered in these picks (Rotham and Ainsworth are quick) but im looking at Christensen coming back into that team that covers that gap. Mutch is extremely smart at the clearances but wont be that bull you are referring too, don't see how a "Bull" is needed with Rockliff in that midfield as Brisbane don't struggle at contested footy.

Needs are a factor as i said but i see this the best time for Freo to draft someone like English who needs time to develop as he wont be thrown into the deep end round 1 due to their key position recruitment's in the trade period

I like those picks for North. Venables is who I want at our pick.. Heard good things about Fisher from a few now and Parfitt has dropped down a few people's rankings but he has oodles of talent imo.

Completely agree! Parfitt had a fantastic SANFL finals (kicked 3 goals in a reserves final) and whoever gets him will be licking their lips, fantastic ball winner who is a good kick aswell

Pretty much nailed it for Essendon IMO, even more so if you had us taking Sam Walker with our 3rd rounder.
Walker is an interesting one, had a fantastic champs and was All Australian but didnt test too flash. He uses the ball well but is not very versatile but i think he will be selected from about 50 onwards.

Not sure we take Marshall, as next draft is supposed to be really strong on talls and Marshall has a few question marks.

Wouldn't be surprised if we reached a bit and took SPP with out first and Bolton with the second if he is the flight risk as you say.

first pick for SPP is a reach but i think Eagles will go best available with their first pick and that's Marshall for me
