Hi all,

Just wondering if there are many aquairum hobbyists here? Might be nice to share some photos, set ups and so on. Did a quick search but couldn't find any other threads. If I have completely missed an aquarium/fish thread, feel free to merge.

I grew up with fish tanks, but have not had any in years.

Decided to get one, so just bought a small(ish) tank at 18 x 12 x 12 inch. Planning on setting up as more of a planted aquarium with just a few red cherry shrimp and either zebra danios, white clouds or red boraras. From what I have read, they are least likely to attack the shrimp. I'm not too fussed if they keep the shrimp population down a bit, but was wondering if anyone had experience with red cherry shrimp and danios/white clouds/boraras? I have had both zebra danios and white clouds before. From memory the danios were more zippy and the white clouds were a little more placid. I assume that as the boraras are smaller they will be less inclined to nibble.

Got a 70L with a Siamese fighting fish, 5 rummynose tetra, 5 green tetra, 4 dwarf pencilfish and an otto. Only had one death in two years until the other week when I had to use a new kitchen sponge to clean the tank. Luckily I avoided a full catastrophe but a few didn't make it :(

Used to be right into it as a teenager but haven't had any set up in years. Got a massive old 6x2x2 foot tank just gathering dust in the shed, should really sell it one day and just buy a small tank maybe to keep a couple of my favourite cichlid fish in or something.. Severums are pretty awesome, used to have one that I could actually 'pat' in the water haha.

I like aquariums, but I put them in the same category as home gym equipment bought via infomercials as stuff people buy then lose interest in pretty quickly.

They look really cool, though. I was going to buy one when I was about 12 or 13. Saved up pocket money and won some money from a competition, then ended up buying a Nintendo 64 instead. Best decision ever. Still have the 64, the aquarium would've sat in the shed for years after I moved out and probably broke under the weight of other boxes etc.

One day when I'm older and more settled I'd like to build a good setup and try to get it as self sufficient as possible with regards to water chemistry, temperature etc. Constantly measuring the pH, checking the temperature, changing the water etc. has knobs on it.

Agree with you regrding the constant checking of things Scotland. I don't really have the time to give it that much detail, so thats why I plan on getting mainly plants just with a few small fish and shrimp to help balance it out. Will be cold water too, not tropical. The tank I got is only 40 litres so pretty tiny.

Also smart decision with the N64. I just bought a Super Nintendo. Winning at life.

One of my mates has a small to medium sized tropical setup in his place. It's a fibro house so he converted an old alcove bookshelf/TV cabinet thing into a space for it so it looks cool. He has tropical fish so it's a bit of a pain in the arse for him having to maintain the right water conditions. I'd love to have a really big tank so I could have decent sized fish, but arsed if I could dedicate the time and space to it.

Two controllers, rumble pak, Mario 64, GoldenEye 64 and Mario Kart 64 and console and it all still works perfectly. Winning. I've got a couple of other games too (Snowboard Kids, TopGear Rally IIRC) but the first 3 are the main 3 any 64 owner must own.

Now if only there was some way to combine the two things I'm talking about...

Well thats just silly. They should have incorporated one of the under water levels from Mario.

THE PIPES CONNECT!! That is amazing. I put my hand up, I was wrong. But the music probably swayed me.

Still should have gone for the underwater level look I think.

Generally speaking the larger the tank the easier it is to maintain, although cleaning may take a bit longer, due to less fluctuations in water temp and condition.

All that's required for mine is a feed every day and a 30min clean on the weekend. It's so easy.

If you are just keeping the cichlids most of them are hardy as ****, once the tank is settled and everything running smoothly the work is very minimal imo, about the easiest pets ever to look after.. Maybe your water might need to be checked initially for levels right at the start to make sure all is good but stuff like ph is just usually what pet shops use as an excuse as to why a fish died and to sell you some more crap. You just need a heater in the water to make sure the temp stays somewhere in the 20s.

I did at one stage have trouble with a lot of them dying in a large tank but that was just one fish aggressive breed that was a 'serial killer', you would wake up in the morning and there would be one fish that had been beaten to death by him overnight haha.

Haven't walked in there for a few years but Morley Aquariums at least used to for a long time comfortably be the best shop to buy fish from in Perth.

The last fish I had was one of these green severums, its buddy from the shop died not long after setting the tank up but I had him for years until he decided to jump out one night on the floor when I had forgotten to put the lid back on after feeding him :( He had also managed to earler survive some comedian's attempt to be funny at a party we had and chuck a heap of bourbon in to his little tank

I have just set up a tank, albeit a small one (18 x 12 inch).

I have a feeling the filter is a tad strong for the size of the tank so need to do some research.

Its planted up with some moss and anubias on some drift wood, as well as a fern and some kind of grass (forget what). The tank is currently cycling. I will start by getting some of thee bad boys sometime soon before getting a handful of fish:

I've been planning on doing this for some time.

Get a SNES and get an N64 and **** other consoles

I love good aquariums. I've only got a small 40-ish litre one. Just got a few guppies and about 12 or so neon tetras, had a couple of bottom feeding catfish (not sure the actual name for them) as well but they carked it. Will replace them when I get the time.

The parents of one of my mates used to have a kick ass set up, was massive and they had all sorts of stuff in there. Mini shark looking critters, big bright tropical ones, it was great.

Can be really good for just chilling and watching for a few minutes here and there.

So my 18 inch tank lasted a month before I thought '**** it' and bought a 3 foot tank instead. Here is a photo I took earlier today.
