Its clear the AFL tried to discourage focus on weight related apperance by no longer publishing the weight of players a few years back.
It was brought in initially for the AFLW to avoid the woman being trolled about their weight. Maybe they were worried about triggering eating disorders as well?

They also stopped doing skin fold tests on the woman around the same time

Adelaide were/are using a scan to test body fat anyway (probably the other clubs as well). Gives better info than calipers anyway

Dont mean to get all preachy, I dont think Toby deserves any punishment or anything, we should just move on, and Im not against some banter, but sometimes these seemingly harmless comments do have quite harmful consequences.

A professional athlete calls an opponent fat.

Well if the player is fat then they aren't a professional athlete are they?

And if they also regularly shit stir opponents then too bad IMO.

Live by the sword........etc....etc.

I just hope the Swans stick fat with Papley and not waist time worrying about on field jibes. Just rolls with it.
Odd thing is, Greene looked more overweight than what Papley did. Was Greene talking about himself in the third person?

I mean like I said, I dont know Paps said, so many he had it coming. Just in a general sense I don't think I'd feel comfortable insulting people on their weight on public tv, but I don't think players should be banned for speaking their minds. I like the honestly and frankness, but at the same time encouraging it does start to feel like bullying.

The majority of people on this forum are probably overweight.

Not me though, I'm posting from the stair-master at the gym.
To be fair on me, I’ve lost 2.5kgs. Down to 110kgs. Doing my best by eating better. Blood pressure is thanking me for it

Unless he elbowed himself at some point.... probably not

Hey! I come here to criticise professional athletes about their split second mistakes, not to have my own more deliberate life decisions criticised! 😡

Good post.

It’s finding the balance isn’t it. Probably Toby is stepped up to the line, but who’s gonna push in a little bit and step over it, and how do we decide where the line is?

If Papley responded in a later interview

“Dunno about that, Tobes’ eyesight is a bit iffy, you know accidentally running into umpires, misjudging his high marks pushing studs into opponents, stuff like that”, that’s probably ok.

What about “I’m not gonna get offended by that, Tobes can be a bit thick sometimes and get his words mixed up”, is that ok? Probably not.

How about “Tobes was just sticking up for his new mate Jake who’s probably gotten into the pies a bit more than me”?

All in good humour.

It seemed funny at the time, but in hindsight I don't think Toby should've said it. There are those who have complexes over their weight etc. I don't know what Tommy said though, not saying he asked for it exactly, but maybe it was just banter. It's hardly like Papley is what we'd actually call fat and unfit, by the standards of the general population.
Dude

Youre Good Robert Deniro GIF

I think they did it because it was a bigger issue in AFLW and it looks better for consistency to have the same position across the men's and women's game.

Papley isn’t overweight for a normal person, but he’s clearly lacking conditioning for an AFL athlete. These jibes would have been made on the field. Toby chose to make them public for absolutely no benefit. While there shouldn’t be an issue with it, I don’t see what he would have wanted to gain by saying it to a tv camera.
