I was in the army reserve. Don't do it for the money, it really isn't much. No real horror stories to report, sure they are big on discipline, but that is hardly surprising. What really sucks is the loss of the weekends, always on when there is a big match on. If you don't mind roughing it and spending countless hours polishing boots and cleaning rifles, it is a good experience.

Pretty much my impression. Sure the money isn't much, but given i'm a destitute student looking to move outta home and get living
away from home allowance from centrelink- a few extra tax free dollars would be nice.

As for the loss of weekends, isn't that the same with any job?

Well my advice then is go for it. It can be hard, bloody hard, as they do push you to see what you can take, but undoubtably its a character building exercise. And when you finish a night/weekend they know how to unwind, relax and enjoy themselves. It's been a few years now since I was in Reserves (I left as it interrupted my rowing too much) but I remember that time with pride. And anyway, if it's good enough for Billy Bragg, it's good enough for me.

Actually, I'm curious, does anyone know how the australian army is organised as far as tanks, armored vehicles, and whatnot go? Do we have calvary battalions with all the tanks, apcs, blackhawks and so on lumped together like the yanks do, or are they divvied up and assigned to each infantry battalion?

They are each in their own units but do work together with other units given the small size of our Army...........

For more info have a look around here........Australian Army Units

Forcing people to join the army is just stupid, I had to two years of the crap for school, I hated every second of it, I had to entertain myself by arsing around and making a total joke of the whole thing, sure I got in trouble a lot but I couldn't give a crap, I did everything I could to escape that boring, mundane, routined load of rubbish.

If people want to join it fine, I don't care, just don't force anybody.
