Some other boards are discussing the bloke.

He has obvious "issues" re desire, committment, application, intensity, work ethic, etc, but he has one thing in his favour, talent, & bucket loads of it.

Seeing that the Crows are screaming out for a "fox in the box" style forward pocket, would you guys be happy to give the bloke a chance?

I'd prefer you/Crows98 multiplied with Black Douglas in our forward line.

What would WCE ask for him?

Did Sampi have some criminal type issues involving a knife, or am I thinking of someone else?

Assaulted his girlf's sister at knifepoint if I recall. Didn't get weeks for it though.

Just carry over points.

I don't recall any "against the law" style issues?

Some Coasters were talking about his diet, being a Hungry Jacks addict.

It comes down to a kid with the talent to make it, if he was in the correct setup that would inspire him to be disciplined.

For a club needing his style of player, I'd imagine he'd be worth a risk, if he came cheap.

he was using the knife to illustrate the pain he was feeling (dunno what about though). he apparently was making stabbing motions towards himself.. :thumbsu:

its a common misconception that he 'threatened' people with a knife.

west coast players get hungry jacks discount cards, so this wouldnt suprise me.

Sounds a bit like defence lawyer horseshit to me, but hey, I wasn't there.

"Martin wasn't aiming at the 30-odd tourists, he was merely celebrating Glenorchy's 6 goal win over Sandy Bay. Between loading the gun and pointing it to the heavens, something went awry..."

You didn't use that logic in the Kenny Mac thread.

Your quote would have represented my thoughts so much better if you used all of it.

"For a club needing his style of player, I'd imagine he'd be worth a risk, if he came cheap.

A 2nd rounder is too expensive for McGregor, a 5th rounder is cheap & therefore worthwhile.

Selective quoting is a low act.

Sampi fined

WEST Coast forward Ashley Sampi has received a fine and had recorded a 'spent conviction' in the Perth Magistrates Court after pleading guilty earlier this month to 'common assault and carrying a weapon with intent to cause fear' following a domestic dispute with his girlfriend and her sister.

Sampi, 22, was fined $750.

The incident came about when Sampi was accused of infidelity, but the court was told that that accusation has now been proved baseless.

Sampi's lawyer Peter Momber said 'loyalty was very important to my client'.

"He wanted to cut himself to show (his girlfriend) that he was loyal to her, to affirm his love to her, to show he would go through pain for her," Momber told the court.

The court had earlier heard Sampi had 'armed himself with a 20cm knife and went to his girlfriend's sister's house where he called for her to come outside. But she refused because she was afraid the knife would be used against her'. The court heard that Sampi stopped when his grandfather asked him to.

The court was also told that Sampi's girlfriend and her sister had 'regretted the incident and were (now) not fearful of him'.

The West Coast Eagles had supported Sampi throughout the issue, writing to the court that 'the AFL was a difficult environment for Indigenous footballers'.

It is also understood that Sampi is undergoing professional counselling over the self-harm issue.

You are overrating the value of draft picks while simulataneously underrating KMac.

Kenneth is a proven key position player who is adept at both ends. At 26 he has plenty of good footy left, either in defence or up forward.

He would easily be worth a second rounder (20-25) right now - and if he was fit, in form and playing to the best of his abilities he would comfortably command a first rounder (8-15).

What is a 'spent conviction'?

Is that a criminal record?

If you have convictions that are more than 10 years old, you can apply for an order to have them declared spent.

You must not have had any further convictions in this time (unless no punishment, or a fine of $500 or less, was imposed)

He'll be 27 before 2008 season starts, & if he's so good, why can he not get a game at the 11/10 Crows?

Other players in front of him, yes, & if the Doggies trade wisely, they'd also have players ahead of him in the pecking order

Would you happily surrender a 20-25 pick for a bloke that cannot make another clubs 1st 30 players?

McGregor doesn't even hardly make it on the emergencies list these days.

It's nothing to do with trading wisely - as the Doggies showed with their default chase of McDoogs it's purely about what's available.

He has slipped down the pecking order due to injury - nothing to do with talent. At his best he's easily a first teamer. Easily.

My word I would.

Brad Symes and John Meesen have been struggling to get a game for Port/Crows respectively, but there'd be 15 other clubs clamouring to get them at that price.

As Campbell's Chunky said on the other thread, it's a case of a club having too many players in the one position combined with the circumstances I just outlined.

Symes is 22, Meesen is 21, hardly fair comparisons

They have age and potential on their side. McGregor has proven ability in what are notoriously difficult positions on his side.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other - bottom line, all three are currently down the pecking order for various reasons (squad competition, injury) and are on the table come trade time.

What is a 'spent conviction'?

Is that a criminal record?

SENTENCING ACT 1995 - SECT 45

Spent conviction order: making and effect of
45 . Spent conviction order: making and effect of
(1) Under section 39(2), a court sentencing an offender is not to make a spent conviction order unless —
(a) it considers that the offender is unlikely to commit such an offence again; and
(b) having regard to —
(i) the fact that the offence is trivial; or
(ii) the previous good character of the offender,
it considers the offender should be relieved immediately of the adverse effect that the conviction might have on the offender.

I'm pretty sure in this case it wasn't in relation to a prior conviction that the spend conviction order was made, but there is power to make a spent conviction order for a current offence meaning that a conviction is not recorded against the person for that offence. Immediate effect.

The above is from the WA Sentencing Act and there is also a Spent Conviction Act which is applicable.

If McGregor's "proven ability" was good enough, he'd be in the Crows team, but it isn't, therefore he isn't.

Whereas youth & potential are valuable commodities in today's AFL

How may times do you need to be told? He's been injured, had a limited preseason, etc etc etc.

Look, never mind. He's a dud. Not worth a cold pie. Happy?

He's been available what, the last 10 weeks?

How many AFL games in that time?

Anyway, this thread was intended to be about Sampi, your thoughts?
