For some reason, despite me being an allegedly mature adult, a friend gave me an Asterix Omnibus for Christmas (ie 5 stories in one).

I hadn't read these cartoons/books since I was a kid; reading them was like catching up with an old friend, the years just melted away and I was 8 again.

I love those characters, Asterix, his dog dogmatix, Obelix etc; but my favourite character remains Cacofonix, the musician who always got beaten to a pulp every time he tried to sing!!

The horny old bloke geriatrix made me laugh too...

Does anybody else remember these stories and if so, do you have a favourite character?

yeah,i remember i remember asterix. used to love reading them while in school, although havent picked them up since
obelix used to be my favourite character in the series:)

Unhygenix, the 'fresh' fishmonger was a great name.

I also loved all the roman names like Dipsomaniax the centurian and that funny little pirate that always came up with a latin quote whenever their pirate ship got wrecked. Wish I spoke latin. :)

My fave ....mixing up the wonder drugs
He's called
Getafix in the U.S. and Panoramix in France...go figure??

Of the main characters, Obelix...but I always liked Fulliautomatix and Unhygenix fighting all the time.

I loved the Asterix books, ive still got a few lying around here and there :D

My fave character is Unhygenix the fishmonger, him and Fulliautomatix are a laugh

Gotta also love Cacofonix, and his attempts at singing :D

I've got a French-language Asterix book, Asterix Chez Les Bretons. Been meaning to buy a few more. Comic books are the best way to practice your foreign language reading skills.

Several of the names were changed in translation to English. Dogmatix was originally Idefix, Vitalstatistix the cheiftan was Abraracourcix, Cacofonix was Assurancetourix, Getafix was Panoramix, and so forth.

Can't say I have a favourite character - although it wasn't Asterix himself. Am I the only person who thinks that the central characters in these comic books (Asterix, Tintin, etc) are all poncey little people, and the interesting characters are the supporting cast?

Sadly, the rights to Asterix have been bought by McDonalds.....so the next time you're in France and you're wondering why our Gallic heroes are flogging crap American fast food, there's your answer.

By the way, I always loved Dogmatix......it seems that every frame that has Asterix in it, his dog is at his feet, looking at his master and waving its tail!

Yes! Tintin isn't as interesting as his mates: the Captain and the twins etc . ANd you gotta love Snowy ( that's the name of the little dog with attitude isn't it ?? )

Also has anyone seen the French Asterix movie from 2 years ago?
Christian Clavier from the Visiteurs was Astérix but
Gérard Depardieu really looked and acted like Obélix !
Roberto Benigni (remember him?!?)was Lucius Detritus (Tullius Destructivus)

Favourite character? To many to choose from.

Shame to hear about the hamburger chain getting the rights though. Has anyone been to the 'Asterix park' in France? Ive heard about it but never met anyone thats gone there.

Gees re reading these books, some of this stuff just went right over my head as a kid. How about these names;

dipsomaniax
winesandspirix
jellibabix
instantmix

or these towns;
podium
ultimatum
chewingum
calcium
opossum
humdrum
opium

:p :D

Aye, Snowy in English, or "Milou" in the original French-language books. IIRC, Professor Calculus was Professeur Tournesol in the originals - literally "Professor Sunflower". The Thom(p)sons were Messrs. Dupont and Dupond. Don't remember what Haddock was originally called. Most of the other minor characters (Rastapopoulos, Castafiore, etc) retained their original names.

I haven't read one in ages but the images of romans centurions getting knocked out of their sandals stays with me. Also the bard Cacophonix being gagged and bound up a tree somewhere in the closing scene and the story of Obelix falling into a vat of magic potion when he was a baby gets told every book. Also Obelix eating massive amounts of chickens. I loved that big lug!!!!

Boars

Boars, not chickens ODN. Though he ate pretty much everything on site. The Switzerland book where Asterix and Obelix were covered in the fondu provided evidence any food on offer was okay! :D

Btw has anyone seen the animated movies from the seventies? Ive got a couple but im not sure how many were made. Asterix the Gaul, Asterix vs the Romans, Asterix in Britain. There are probably more but these are the only English language ones ive found. Fairly poor quality which is a shame.

Yep, I've seen Asterix in Britain. It wasn't great, but I was still rapt to find it.

Do you remember the Egyptian guy in "Asterix the Legionary" called Ptennisnet? And Nefarious Purposes? What about Spurius Lartius? oh wait he was a real Roman...

Asterix and Tintin both rock!!! I probably like Tintin a bit more as there is a bit more depth to the stories, but both are really good.

Trivia question = Which Tintin book has Asterix making an apperance and which Asterix book has the Thompson twins?
