News At Long Last.... JAKE STRINGER IS A RISING STAR

I owe Jake thanks.
I have two young sons who have danced on the dark side (one threatening to be a Tiges supporter, the other the drug cheats, both due to family connnections)
I had gradually brainwashed the children away (going to our win over the Tiges this year, and brainwashing with the words 'drug cheating scum').
But the kids still wavered. Purchasing of Bulldogs guernsies helped. Taking them to the 2nd Melbourne game helped (roadkill I thought!).
Yesterday, after the Saints game, I asked the kids what number they wanted on their backs....
No 9, Jake Stringer they both said at the same time. They both looked at each other and started to argue over who was getting Jake's no. I settled it - they both can.
Thanks again to Jake for just about closing the deal on the FFC picking up two more supporters - he's that kind of player, who will excite and drag people through the gates.

That is gold!
Players like Stringer are what it's all about. They bring people through the gates. Most importantly they make kids want to follow the team rather than having their parents force it down their throats.
Stringer reminds me of Gary Ablett Senior. He plays as an undersized power forward, powerful through the hips, kicks miraculous goals... all he needs to do is start plucking a few big marks which I have no doubt he can and he will be the full package.
I was so glad we picked him 2 years ago. so glad...

Stringer ding ding, gonna be the next King.
I'm thinking of getting a banner made up.

Been tossing up between 'STRINGA-DING-DING' and 'Sugar, aw Honey Honey.'

No problem, just steal my ultimate footy team name for your banner.....I won't be offended....much :p
If it makes you feel any better I'm leaning towards the Honey banner :p Goes with my jumper.

I called him the next big thing last year, so I decided to quickly chuck a video together to express that excitement.

Awesome video dude... Thanks heaps...Some players would be happy with those highlights over a career...Man we're going to have some fun in the coming years

Great to hear Jake talking about the development benefits of playing for 6 weeks in defense in the AFL side and then three weeks on-ball in the VFL. Even better to hear him excited about his young team-mates' development and how he hopes they'll be together for the next 10 years!

I particularly liked the quote about him being put in situations he's uncomfortable in, and learning to deal with them. Gives us a little window into the strategies Macca is currently working with and lends support to the fact that perhaps results aren't everything at this point.

7 nominations now...
This batch is looking exciting!

Could have easily had 10, given some of our gun young players didn't get one, now to add in those seven. Surely only GWS or someone would rival that. Now if they can all find consistency

Well done Jake, starting to play with the same dominance and confidence before his leg injury. Hopefully he can sustain this form and become our own version of Pavlich

Hopefully with more AA and flags to his name.

31 nominations over 22 years - pretty close to par.

Of those 31 the jury is still out on 8 of them although the signs are fairly good at this stage. Of the remaining 23 not all became actual "stars". I'd say six were flops - didn't even reach 100 AFL games:
Nicholson
Grgic
Hargraves (Daniel)
Lane
Penny
Birss

Another 6 were average to good players:
Southern
McMahon
Williams
Hill
Grant
Higgins

Only 11 of the 23 became genuine stars, most earning AA honours at some stage - and one of those left us after 60 games:
West
Johnson
Darcy
Giansiracusa
Murphy

Hargrave (Ryan)
Cross
Cooney
Minson
Griffen
Ward

So for all the RS hoopla, the proven "hit rate" has only been about 50%.
Of the 8 younger ones I'm pretty confident five, maybe six, will go on to genuine stardom and/or 200 game careers.

Luke Penny would've been a great long term defender for the Saints if not for injury

True. And he would've been a great long term defender for us if not for lack of commitment.
Karma to them both.
