Unofficial Preview AtGi40D: The Final Results

Well, it's been a busy off-season for us on here.

First we went through "THE BEST OF THE BEST 22", and determined who we think will be our strongest team for the year.

Then we used that as the base for our team during "Around the Grounds in 40 Days", looking at each Saints game for the 2017 season in detail, to determine how we think we will go.

Here is a table of the results, indicating round, opposition, various advantages, our votes, and how that would look on the ladder:


That makes for some fascinating reading and analysis. I've added a poll, just to see if, in the cold light of day and with the big picture, we think we've done an accurate job. But yeah, I think there's lots to talk about out of that. Fire away!

Geelong, Dogs and one of West Coast or North.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are some big fluctuations in form for plenty of teams this year. So many have improved and there is fewer rubbish teams, injuries and the fixture should play a huge part. Nearly all team have improved or will be in a holding pattern. The only clubs who have weakened in the off season are Hawks and North ...well perhaps Adelaide have one less good mid and Sydney too for that matter. Even those clubs could still have further internal development. Brisbane, Essendon, GCS, Freo and Carlton are all building lists that are decent so could come good. No easy beats any more.

Pretty confident lot. If we're sitting our expectations on a 17 win season then I hope the boys are up for the challenge!

One vote the other way would have had a draw for the Cats and Dogs games. I'd say they're the two other ones that will be difficult for us. Plus the potentially rejuvenated Dockers and Port both interstate which we historically do not do well.

13-15 wins is about my expectations/hope.

I noticed that, when you look at the previous travel and day break advantages, we have a lot more than might be expected. Two of those, against Adelaide and Fremantle, involve them having to come back from playing Geelong at Skilled! Also against the Tigers, they had to play interstate the week that we had to, cancelling out that disadvantage for either team. The only really major bummer is the double-trip to Sydney and then Adelaide in rounds 18 and 19. The draw isn't as bad as people say.

Those are the two very close votes. I also disagree pretty strongly with the votes in the Port game. But again, they had to play interstate the week before, so there's no previous travel advantage to either side. But yikes, I've been scarred from so many games at the Adelaide Oval that have proven, er, most unpleasant.

Spot on this, 13-14 wins is far more realistic.

Making finals (6th to 8th) should be the side's benchmark. Winning one final and I would say that 2017 has been a successful season. Any more, and I'll be ecstatic.

Yeah I thought it was great fun , I couldn't wait for the next round as soon as I finished . I am disappointed with the result , I thought we could have gone through undefeated , lmao

Would be cool to see all the clubs do it. I'm sure there would be a lot of teams making finals

But you could actually make a ladder out of it still and see how accurate it is (and all the results along the way) at the end of the year.

It would be like BigFooty Board tipping heh.

A bit too optimistic, in my generally pessimistic point of view. But then stranger things have happened.....
I'd have us losing to the Eagles at home and only winning 1 (maaaaaybe 2) out of Cats, Dogs & Hawks, putting us 14W-8L.

With the changes and current dynamic of our list, combined with the number of younger guys primed to go next-level, it'll be fascinating to see what sort of impact this has and whether our optimism can become reality!

I think a tad too optimistic with the mark likely standing between 12-15 wins for the season. I don't think we'll have two years of such good injury management in a row. If we win 17 we're likely top 2 and favourites for the flag. I don't think so. A year too early IMO.

But it has been a fun exercise and it's exciting that the majority of supporters on here think that we're a chance of getting to 17 wins.
