Preview:

The tail-end of back-to-back Masters Series 1000 events is upon as us the focus shifts to North America and the Cincinnati Masters. Defending champion is Andy Murray who defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2008 final. For whatever reason this tournament is probably my least favourite of all the MS tournaments but I’m still really looking forward to it.

As usual with these tournaments there are some outstanding first round matches on the cards. Ferrer v Wawrinka is a beauty, as is Juan Carlos Ferrero v Cilic. After a lay-off it will be interesting to see whether Soderling can recapture his form and he meets Lleyton Hewitt first up. After being slated to meet in Montreal but eventually not doing so due to the retirement of Soderling, Berdych and Gonzalez will finally meet in what should be a gem. Really hoping Sam Querrey can get a win first up against qualifier Lu, it’s one of tonight’s two feature night matches. If he does manage a win he’ll then face Roddick, pretty awful luck for Sam who must have come into these MS events with such confidence.

As for the main contenders, Roger Federer appears borderline disinterested in playing these tournaments as his sole focus is on the Slams. I don’t give him much of a chance especially when you consider he’s got a pretty tough opponent in the 3rd round. One of four quality players in Wawrinka, Cilic, JCF and Ferrer will be Federer’s 3rd round opponent. If he wins though, as he probably will, Roddick awaits in the Quarters. Given Andy’s form and the fact he beat him at this very tournament just last year, I like his chances of doing so again.

Nadal is slowly working his way back from injury and while I’m not as quick to write him off as I was last week, I don’t think he’s truly ready yet. He’s looking at Tsonga in the Quarters but Karlovic could be a sneaky chance at progressing though to meet him in the 3rd round. Worth noting that Karlovic made the Semi’s at Cincinnati last year. Andy Murray appears to be the logical choice. While back-to-back MS tournaments are physically demanding, he did reach both the Indian Wells and Miami finals in March/April. Helping his cause initially is a favourable draw; he won’t meet an opponent capable of troubling him until Verdasco in the Quarters.

The one man I haven’t spoken of is Novak Djokovic. His form is sketchy, his confidence absolutely shot however as per usual he should again be able to knock off weak opponents early. He should have minimal trouble reaching the Quarters where Davydenko/Simon will await. After I promised myself I wouldn’t after seeing him struggle through Montreal I can’t believe I’m going to again be sucked into predicting a successful week for Novak but I can’t help but like his draw.

Prediction: Roddick def. Djokovic

You wouldn’t be wrong if you came to the assumption that Murray would be my tip to win however I’m going with Roddick. Murray’s form on hard courts this year has been incredible, all that’s missing is a Grand Slam and he’ll get his chance soon enough. Perhaps the only thing stopping him here is fatigue because with Del Potro having to withdraw his bracket looks a lot easier. I think Roddick will beat Federer and then ride that wave of confidence to beat Murray. In all likelihood, and assuming they actually do meet, whoever wins the Murray/Roddick SF will win the title. As for Djokovic reaching the final, I can’t believe I’m doing it again. I just think he’s got a dream draw to the Semi’s and I expect either Tsonga/Nadal to await and they will be exhausted by the time they face Novak.

Murray is my prediction for this week, he seems like he is the fittest and playing the best tennis out of everyone this week, maybe need to get more first serves in than a few of his matches he had last week. I really don't know who will come out of that second half, Djokovic, it's really time to start showing something (i hope you don't though :p).

Just looking at the OOP tomorrow, Soderling/hewitt 2nd on centre court, would rather earlier or later than that, 3am isn't good. Can't believe they didn't give Guccione Centre Court or Grandstand  ;)

Safin just beat Ginerpi, a match he didn't choke, maybe we are in for a strange week.

Hopefully Hewitt has picked up his form this week because he can't be playing the way he did against Ferrero, Soderling hasn't been in the best of form lately but he could blow lleyton off the court if playing really well. I really hope Guccione can beat kohli but that really shouldn't happen

I reckon Federer will beat Djokovic in the final. Should be a good match in the night session tomorrow night with Cilic taking on David Ferrer. Ferrer beat Wawrinka 7-5 6-2 a bit suprising i thought.

Managed to watch a couple of matches yesterday, mainly just bits and pieces though. Wanted to watch Querrey vs Lu so I watched that one in its entirety. Sluggish start by Sam to go down an early break but broke back the very next game and he didn't have too many difficulties thereafter as he won in straight sets. Hit some superb passing winners when Lu approached the net. Interesting to note that Mark Woodforde has been working with Lu in regards to his net play, not sure why he'd be working with someone who's not exactly a top line player. Next up for Sam is Roddick, extremely tough ask but you never know...

Karlovic defeated Monfils 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. I've predicted Karlovic to make the Quarters so I expected that result. Monfils did a little better than I imagined though.

Wawrinka was terrible in his straight sets loss to Ferrer, just wasn't there mentally. Made an unusually large amount of errors from the backhand wing. Juan Carlos Ferrero was just as bad, he was a shadow of the player that took out Hewitt and Monfils in Montreal as he lost to Cilic in two straight forward sets. Ferrero's movement was poor and he looked as though he just didn't want to be there.

Nice touch in the PH Mathieu/Zverev match as both players helped attend to an ill ball boy who was overcome with the heat. Was great touch from both players. Mathieu ended up winning in 3.

Gilles Simon was particularly impressive in his win over Odesnik but it must be said the standard of opposition wasn't much to write home about.

Looking forward to the Hewitt/Soderling match today.

Fully sick third day at Cincy. Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic all playing!

Who gives a stuff about them when the great one is on at 1am against Tsonga, match of the year no doubt.

Guccione may be in with a chance, considering Tsonga is a pretty poor returner. It could come down to who doesn't choke in the TB.

Of course this is me being incredibly optimistic ;P

oh and anyone planning on watching the Blake-kunitsyn match, save yourself the torture. Over 100 UE between them!

Will there be any live streams on Grandstand? Hewitt and Guccione both play on that court.

I agree re Guccione, if he serves well, mainly to Tsonga's backhand, I'd give Chris a chance, because it will come down to the TB's and Tsonga's shot selection is not always the smartest. I'm expecting a 6-3, 7-6 result to Tsonga though.

I wish Blake could refind his form, one of my favourite players to watch when on song.

Yeah, there will be streams of Hewitt and Guccione, not much sleep again tonight.

Do you know what the websites are? Is Hewitt on at 9am our time and Guccione 1am?

bet365.com is a great site for tennis streaming, for some reason for a few months my internet counted all my streaming from bet365, justin.tv etc. for free so basically could watch unlimited tennis. Sadly, after Wimby (where i wasgoing nuts with the streaming) they mus of realised and now it's counting. Some sites defiantely take more MB than others, bet365 is a real killer of quota, anybody know how to lessen the quality of the stream from bet365.com.

Thanks mate. Great website watching a challenger event now. Is anyone going to bother staying up for Guccionie still wondering if i should.

I have, Not a lot of rallies so far.

Gooch ended up winning 7-6 (12), 6-2. The first set was game for game until the tb (only tsonga had a couple of bp's which gooch saved nicely). The first 20 points of the TB were on serve until Tsonga got the point after hitting a 2nd serve into guccione's feet. This is where the match gets hilarious, Tsonga forced to hit a 2nd serve ends up getting in a tentative rally between the two and the Gooch was able be the agressor and got the forced error. 11-11 and went on serve until Tsonga missed a simple forehand to hand Goch the first set.

The 2nd set was a huge waste of time, supposedly Tsonga has an injury but to me he looked like he tanked it, Gooch was able to get to 4-0 and eventually finished it off 6-2

Nothing has improved since i saw him last, i actually think his volley might actually be a touch worse, served well and that's all that matters. Petzschner or Berdych in the 3rd round, very interesting.
