Atp Points At Davis Cup

Ive recently heard from players that they disagree to play in the Davis Cup, reason being that they want ATP Points to be involved. One of these players is World number 1 Roger Federer. He said he wants to beat Pete Sampras record of 4 years at number 1, as he is currently at 3 years.
What do you think?

Good idea - however if they're going to change aroud the Davis Cup, hopefully they look at the overall set-up of it - surely they can make the scheduling etc. more compact & accessible to players & fans.... Time for a major overall I think.

Also - Fed has already been year-end number 1 for 4 years (2004-07) - equal with Lendl and McEnroe....Connors did it 5 times.... Pete did it 6 times (1993-98)

Would be difficult to do, and would disadvantage some players who play in countries that arent huge on Davis Cup, and lack depth, along with those who cant play for there teams due to other better players in that country.

Also would be difficult to rank how Hewitts matches against low quality Asian sides compares to Djokovic's single handed fight against Russia (not knocking Tipserivic in anyway, nor the other Serbs).

Great concept, but difficult to manage fairly IMO

The more regular the Davis Cup is, the less relevant it is.

Make it every 2 years.

And ATP points should not available for playing Davis Cup.

ATP announce ranking points for Davis Cup

The ITF and the ATP today announced that South African Airways ATP Ranking Points will be awarded for Davis Cup from 2009. This is the first time that ranking points will be awarded for singles and doubles rubbers played in the elite World Group and World Group Play-off Round.

The addition of ranking points for all live singles and doubles rubbers is an added incentive for players to represent their nations in Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

“This is a win/win situation for Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and the ATP,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. “The calendar is stabilised for the upcoming years in the model that the top players requested and, for the first time in history, Davis Cup players will receive well-deserved ranking points for their performance in the competition.”

“We are delighted to award South African Airways ranking points for Davis Cup starting in 2009,” said Etienne de Villiers, ATP’s Executive Chairman. “The new ATP tour structure for 2009 is about providing fans, broadcasters and sponsors with the very best circuit possible. Like the tour, Davis Cup is a key component to the growth and future of tennis. We look forward to an exciting and memorable season to come.”

Disappointing IMO. While of course getting the world's best players to participate in the Davis Cup is a good thing, I don’t like the fact that players have to be given an incentive to play. You play Davis Cup due to the passion and pride in representing your country, not to gain some ranking points. Not thrilled about this move, not at all.

Thanks for this new initiative, Roger. We all know he’s virtually the reason the decision was made.

Where is the pride in Davis Cup anymore? You dont play for yourself, the chairumpire calls "Game, Australia" not "Game, Hewitt".

If you cant put in a weekends effort for your country then you should be ashamed, espcially since they would have given you a lot of your own training etc...

It's only Roger that needs an incentive. No one else has a problem committing to their country.
