1. Continue to waste picks on short people, Nason, Weborely, Hicks etc Westhoff (bodysize not height)
2. Dont get so narrow minded on draftable players from the start of the year. Things change
3. Draft purely attacking players, front runners
4. draft flankers, pockets etc
5. Draft Players that are selfish!
6. Continue to boast about snatching Hellbig & Heslin from Essendon, when we passed up on Dyson Heppell.

Do.
1. Draft players that have character (players that will fight and not accept being trampled over)
2. Draft players that play well in big games
3. Draft footballers
4. DRAFT PLAYERS THAT HAVE BODY SIZE of WILL FILL OUT TO PLAY LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS.
5. Draft players that know how to tackle

If Francis Jackson, is trying to do the above, well then he needs to be moved coz he is along way off.

Agree with your post, i don't want to say it cos its early days but Conca over Heppel could have been the wrong move. Heppel would have bolstered our leaky defence and released Deledio into the midfield:(

That's what Houli and Batch are meant for. And they have for the most part. Lids plays a fair bit in the middle.

Conca looks like he will be a super player, but I don't understand why we wouldn't draft Heppel. He ticks all the boxes that Conca ticked (decision making, composure, skills) except he is bigger (which we need) and at the moment is looking like he will have a bigger impact. He defs is in his first year.

Fair enough not taking certain other players, but we were looking for an outside link up player with good skills, run and decision making, So we went Conca instead of some other players, but Heppel has all those traits and looks to be better than Conca.

Makes no sense to me.

agree 100 % , first we had greg beck hopeless then miller the same now fj is shocking and be for people start to praise him the hole world new about cotch and martin ,should be sack , please benny gale get someone that nose what he is doing :mad::mad::mad:

I'm not critical of Reece Conca, as he has the makings of a really good player. It's just that we could've had both Heppell and Conca without too much fuss. We need only have traded to upgraded our Pick 30 into the late teens. We had (have) a number of dispensable players that would've got that job done.

Not a knock on conca who will be a very good player so no fear that he'll be a tambling or JON bust BUT

Heppell lookd better as a junior, looks better in his first season and will clearly be a better player all round. It's pretty bleating obvious
 
No offense to Francis but i just dont think hes the man for the job. Hes been here for 5 years now and i think its time for us to look elsewhere. Sure hes netted us some nice selections but has missed quite a few too. I dont think we can afford this ratio at this stage.

I mentioned a while ago i thought Brad Lloyd at Fremantle would well be worth a look. Hes been there since 2008 and im really liking his selections. Hes rated highly at the club.

Conca will be a good player. But it was clear to most on this board at the time of the draft that Heppell would be a jet. Anyway we need to get the next two drafts right because we will have a top 10 pick this year and most likely a top 8 pick next year as well as two other picks in the top 20.

I know it's a moot point now, but I'm still surprised that more anger isn't directed towards the AFL for not compensating Richmond in the same way other teams in similar positions have been compensated in the recent past. In a normal draft, we would have had the second pick of an uncompromised draft, and potentially picked up someone like Zac Smith or Josh Toy, and would have easily picked a player like Conca, or someone higher up in the pecking order, using our second, potentially even third round pick.

One good year of drafting can put a side on a very different trajectory; look at what Melbourne picked up in 2009: Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, Tapscott, Gawn. Fair enough to say that Richmond failed to execute their own attempt at that in 2004, but such prioritisation has never paid attention to why a team is in the predicament they are (see Carlton). The missing links in our team would have been accounted for during a business-as-usual drafting scenario; now we are stuck with having to pick from an extremely comprised draft, and with a footy department that is under-funded, this is clearly an extremely difficult task.
 
i still reckon in the long run conca will be a very good player same as heppell. it might end up like judd/hodge, not the same players but the example hodge a great player but judd is still better!
 
THis thread wasnt started to compare Conca V Heppel eventhough most would agree that Heppel atm is a mile ahead.
It about the players FJ has picked in the past 5 years etc and the state of our list & thoughts on the type of players we should be aiming at
My bug bear has always been the size of the players we draft, we always look skinny compared to the others, always getting knocked off the ball.
I love WCE size, at one stage we were down the bottom together.
Next time u watch Pies, Cats, Hawks, WCE look at their players legs, hips & chest then look at how many players we have on our list that resmble those type players.
I understand we are rebuilding but its been a issue for years, plus players like Nason etc can live in the GYM but will never have the same frame.

Exactly. I think a lot of players have limitations but other clubs seem to have more of a knack of either working on their deficiencies or finding a position for them where their deficiencies are not so readily exposed. The fact that we've hardly had any players do any good in the Brownlow in the last 25 years says as much about our inability to develop players as it does about our selection methods. If it was all about selection, we'd have fluked a Brownlow medalist just by throwing darts.

Essendon are sneaky though.
They would've groomed him early on to come to Essendon.

We need to get evil too.


As it stands,I think Conca will be a good player for us.

Maybe our development of players is shoddy?

What if Conca went to an Essendon with the 5 million dollar coaches they acquired?

Brendan McCartney is there who Hird reckons is the best in the league which they poached from the Cats.

Again ,it's all money.


Culture too.

Our players always seem to need more time than every other teams players for some BS reason.

FJ reminds me of the nutty scientist in the Milton the Monster intro.
 
Wow how come people on here never learn dont write off the youngsters early... Give them until 22 at least before you start comparing heppell and conca! Not too long ago we were all praising the picks we got! get a grip
