MELBOURNE forward Austin Wonaeamirri said he quit the club after his father Matthew's death in a car accident in November.

After the Demons' 11-point win over the Brisbane Lions yesterday, Wonaeamirri spoke about a summer in which he had to deal with his dad's passing and the death of cousin and Richmond legend Maurice Rioli.

His father died after the car he was driving swerved to avoid a wallaby, and when Wonaeamirri went home to Darwin for the funeral he considered not returning.

Only the encouragement from his family, teammate Aaron Davey and Northern Territory coach and mentor Brenton Toy changed his mind.

Welcome back Aussie :thumbsu:

He went through a real down patch - fair enough his commitment to footy wasnt a priority at that point.

Glad he's back :thumbsu:

Nothing like real life to give you a bit of perspective as to what really matters.

Good to see he made the right call for his own career & it sounds like he had great support through it all.

Brilliant article and it really touches the heart. I am so glad to hear the support he received by the entire melbourne football club and i know that he will do the club and us supporters proud on-field. Go Aussie!!!

If we were Richmond he would of stayed up there. Goes a fair way to show our club culture :thumbsu:

Even in this current climate of player movement I'm very confident we can maintain our core of indigenous players and any future ones that come :D Well done MFC..

Just wanted to offer up an apology to Demon Revival after saying his info earlier in the was crap when he said as much.
