Darky them teams were shockers. No Slater in the test side leaves us without a reliable opener and then Lehmann before Martyn and Langer?? Poor form young man.

Then you one dayer. No Steve Waugh !! What the hell is that about.

No response for the Waugh Langer Martyn comments?

1. I explained my stance on Steve Waugh in another topic a few weeks ago. I shall endeavour to dig this up for you within the next few days, if you don't stumble upon it yourself.
2. Langer and Martyn -
(a) I am a HUGE fan of Justin Langer, but only intermittently has he looked comfortable batting against world-class attacks. The usual story is a succession of 5-6 scrappy knocks with few runs on the board, getting him close to being dropped, then a gritty 50 or 100 to save his arse.
Admittedly he has done the job at #3 better than anybody since the retirement of David Boon, but I still believe Ponting is destined for that position and should be played there sooner rather than later. This would move Langer down the order, in which case he has more competition for a middle order spot than he does at #3. Enter Darren Lehmann who keeps piling on the runs at Sheffield Shield level, plus at domestic and international one-day level, who deserves another chance after being dropped too hastily after just five Tests.
(b) Martyn was lucky to have got that one-day spot in the first place, but played fantastic cricket over the summer and has since deserved to cement it. But once again Lehmann got a chance, piled on the runs and was dropped.
Martyn vs Lehmann as bowlers may also surprise a lot of people. Martyn has played 70 ODI's and taken 8 wickets @ 47.75. Lehmann has played 66 ODIs and taken 12 wickets @ 37.66. Martyn does have the edge in the field, however Lehmann is no slouch there. Martyn's slightly higher batting average (41 to Lehmann's 36) is helped largely by 22 not outs in 60 innings, scoring lots of dinky little 20s batting at 6 or 7 when Australia are 4 for a million vs the minnows. Lehmann has 11 not outs from 59 innings.
Even though I believe he is simply a better batsman, I think I've given a reasonable explanation to justify picking Lehmann ahead of Martyn.
(c) While you queried my omissions of Martyn and Langer, you didn't seem to have a problem with my naming Hussey ahead of Michael Slater, who has a very good record with a Test average of 44. Maybe if you weren't wearing that Western Warriors team shirt while sitting at the PC, the queries you raised might have a little more punch.
Jamie Cox would be equally worthy if an opening berth became vacant. I bet THEN you would ask "Why drop Slater?"

Ok, here we go Jod...

Has the time come for Steve Waugh to pension himself out of the one day game?
Before replying with jingoistic outcry, look at it objectively... he is still a top batsman, no question, BUT he no longer bowls and is no better a fielder than any other team member. Gilchrist and Warne have both shown their ability to take over as captains. With Waugh batting as low down as 6, the effect of the change-over will not be drastically felt while the team continues to win losing only 2-3 wickets during their 50 overs. Now would be the time to make the change because now is the time the replacements are ample.
And like Taylor and Healy before him, the extra rest may add 2 years to his Test career.
*Darky braces himself and heads for the bunker* Let the abuse begin...

Good point on Waugh actually. In the last world ranking he was in the top 10 Test batters in the world and seen as we are so talented we can easily substitute a player into the one day side for Waugh so his Test career can be prolonged. But for World Cups and so forth he should be brought back cos hes so damn inspirational.
